Guinness Ghana Breweries Limited (GGBL), has been adjudged the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Company of the year at the 7th Ghana CSR Excellence Awards held in Accra.

The company beat off competition from other top CSR-aligned companies to win the award.

The awards was in recognition of Guinness’ commitment to building thriving communities in Ghana through its  Local Raw Materials (LRM) and Water of Life (WOL) programmes.

Corporate Relations Director for GGBL, Mr. Gabriel Opoku-Asare, indicated that the award endorses the company’s unrelenting efforts and sustainable investment in communities across the country over the last few years.

“From a modest 12% LRM use in 2012, Guinness Ghana’s LRM usage has grown to 48%, impacted the lives of more than 25,000 farmers. Our target is to source 70% of local raw materials by 2020; which should have an incremental impact on the communities in which we operate. Currently, we can proudly say we are the largest users of local raw materials in the brewery and manufacturing industry in Ghana”, he said.

He noted that as a leader in Ghana’s manufacturing industry, GGBL is spearheading a Local Raw Materials programme that currently supports over 25,000 farmers and impacting over 175,000 families in the Upper East, Upper West, Northern, Brong-Ahafo, Volta, Eastern and Central regions; adding that, “through this initiative we are improving their skills and yields of cassava, sorghum and maize and enabling sustainable incomes for these farmers and their families”.

Mr. Opoku-Asare mentioned that aligned to the company’s LRM initiative is the Water of Life programme, which has become an essential element of sustainability within the company’s supply chain.

“Since 2007, we’ve sought to establish strong relationships with our local suppliers and their communities, and taking collective actions with them on Water, Sanitation and Health (WASH), where this emerges as a priority challenge. Working in tandem with various partners, the programme has provided access to safe drinking water and sanitation to more than 600,000 beneficiaries in over 70 communities in Ghana, he said.

“We remain committed to our vision of generating long-term business value with locally and sustainably source raw materials which meet quality standards and have a positive impact on the communities and environment in which we operate”, he further noted.

Guinness Ghana was also adjudged the CSR Manufacturing Company of the year, in recognition of the company’s outstanding efforts and impact made through its CSR projects and feasible sustainability plan woven around business practice.

Guinness Ghana Breweries Ltd (GGBL) is delighted to announce that Guinness FES was named Beer of the Year at the inaugural Ghana Beverage Awards recently at the Accra City Hotel.

The Awards, themed “Inspiring excellence in Ghana’s Beverage Industry”, was judged by a panel of industry experts who selected Guinness FES as the Beer of the Year because of what Guinness represents and how that translates into the Ghanaian experience. The public perception of the brand, consumer choice of the brand and CSR activities including “twa kwa no mom”, a road safety campaign under the brand name were also considered. They also observed the creativity of GGBL in localizing the Guinness identity to crown Guinness as beer of the year.

Marketing Director for GGBL, Kweku Sekyi-Cann, on receiving the award said, “We are honoured to be recognised for our Guinness FES at the first Ghana Beverage Awards.  It’s a very timely award as we have recently released our iconic Limited Edition GH@60 bottle, celebrating Ghana’s culture, heritage and history.  Affectionately named OSAGYEFO, this special celebratory bottle has been designed to recognise all the incredible individuals across the country who have demonstrated their Made of Black spirit over the last 60 years. This Award is recognition for the great team across Ghana who contribute to making Guinness such a distinctive beer.  As the nation’s favourite stout, we are proud to be a part of these celebrations, and of the nation’s rich heritage – and now we have even more to celebrate!”

The bold, stylish bottle has been conceived with the help of the Guinness Cultural Council – a collective of imaginative individuals from Ghana, who have joined forces to help develop an eye-catching bottle that will be at the heart of Ghana’s Independence celebrations.  The label is inspired by the creativity of this group and features iconic imagery that reflects Ghana’s evolution and rich culture over the last 60 years.

The Limited Edition bottle also marks 80 years of brewing heritage for Guinness in Ghana.  The packaging has a celebratory look, but inside the bottle, it’s the great tasting Guinness that Ghanaian’s know and love.

Kweku Sekyi-Cann further said, “We are doing more than just launching the bottle. We want to celebrate all the inspirational Ghanaians who have been carving their own path in life for 60 years.  So, throughout the next few months, we will be searching for 60 everyday Ghanaians who make the country Made of Black. The search is on, so if you know someone who represents the unique spirit of Ghana, you can nominate them to be part of the final 60, where they could see their face across Ghana as part of a bespoke advertising campaign.”

The Limited Edition Guinness bottles is available across the country till the end of June and will feature an under the crown promotion where consumers could win a complimentary bottle of Guinness or other specially designed GH@60 prizes.

Make sure you like the Guinness Ghana Facebook page to get involved in all of the celebratory activities (www.facebook.com/Guinness.Gh).  Please remember to enjoy Guinness responsibly.

A brutal student tried to blackmail his former girlfriend out of £700 and force her into cleaning his flat by threatening to release their home made sex tape.

Feng Xiao, 21, even sent her snapshots of the video to prove his threat was serious, a court in New Zealand heard.

Xiao met his 20-year-old partner last year when they were studying at an English school in Auckland and they started dating.

But within months the relationship deteriorated and she fled the apartment they were sharing.

Days later she received threatening text messages from Xiao, who said that unless she coughed up NZD1400 (£700), he would put online a lurid video of her performing sex acts on him.

He also demanded she clean his apartment.

But his victim went to the police instead, admitting the movie had been made consensually, but insisting he had no right to make it public.

She also revealed Xiao’s violent past, detailing how he had slapped her and punched her during their troubled time together.

Once, in a row about her seeing other men, Xiao smashed a cup over her head, punched her in the stomach and even held a knife to her throat.

Xiao admitted three counts of assaulting a female, and a further charge of blackmail and will be sentenced later this month.

Judge Clare Ryan told the Auckland District Court Xiao needed to change his attitude: “He’s going to have to realise the rules of this country apply to him and everybody else,” she said.

Police in the Tamale Metropolis have launched investigations into the circumstances under which explicit photographs and video recordings of different women in sexual orgies went viral in the metropolis.

The pictures and videos reportedly show the women in compromising positions, performing various sexual acts.

They  are suspected to have been taken by a Canadian national who reportedly engaged in the acts with them when he visited Ghana recently.

The Public Relations Officer of the Northern Regional Police, ASP Ebenezer Tetteh, told Citi News that the Police are looking into the matter following complaints from the parents of the man.

According to ASP Tetteh, the parents lodged an official complaint to the police alleging that “a friend of the man had stolen the hard drive on which the pictures were stored” from him and distributed them.

ASP Tetteh revealed that the police had begun investigations into “how the pictures videos were acquired” and whether they were “gained with the consent of the ladies or not.”

The situation has provoked widespread condemnation from residents of Tamale with reports indicating that the women have fled the city.
