Counsel for the police officer who was accused of shooting a GSTS final year student to death has said his client is innocent of the charges brought against him.

Earlier reports indicated that, Corporal Adjei Shaibu opened fire on five students when he came across them on their way to a rap concert at Shama Junction, in the Western Region after accusing them of being armed robbers.

[contextly_sidebar id=”j19D6h5bGAyohpdWECtFjdp18IdRhXHl”]The case which was called at the Takoradi District Court yesterday [Thursday] has been adjourned to January 12, 2018.

Speaking to journalists, counsel for the accused, Edmond Acquaah Arhin however said the request for adjournment was against the right of his client.

Lawyer Edmond Acquaah- Arhin stated that “my client has told me that he did not shoot anybody, the gunshot was not from him. The police is supposed to proof that my client had a gun, shot it and the resultant shooting is what has happened. So my client tells me he did not shoot, he was not wielding a gun, he was not at that particular place at that particular time. So we are here for the prosecution to prove that indeed he did that”.

He continued that he has “so many doubts” that his client committed the act.

“If the stories that we have heard in the media is anything to go by, and it is the same story that the police is going to rely on, I will be surprised. For the information that I have, the investigations I have also done, and the interrogation I have done with my client and the lady he accompanied, it will be extremely difficult for the police to prove their case.”

The State Prosecutor however assured that the investigation team will do everything to ascertain the circumstances that led to the killing of the victim, Lawrence Baidoo.

Meanwhile the second victim who sustained gun wounds is undergoing surgery.

The case involving a final year GSTS student who was shot dead on Friday December 22 at Nyanikrom in the Shama District of the Western Region has been adjourned to January 12, 2018 by the Takoradi District Court.

[contextly_sidebar id=”mV9w2aBHipFbjsL4c6Sygb0razCsMxXx”]The suspect, Detective Corporal Adjei Shaibu has also been taken into police custody at Sekondi.

State Prosecutor Bernard Paa Ahinsan pleaded with the court, presided over by Thomas Ofidie, to grant them two weeks so the investigative team could finish gathering evidence relating to the incident.

This request did not go down well with the counsel for the accused, Edmond Acquaah Arhin, who stated that the request for adjournment was against the rights of his client.

However, the state prosecutor, Bernard Paa Ahinsan, pleaded with the court to adjourn the proceedings, stating that “counsel can request for the charge sheet and then study it for the next hearing”.

Detective Corporal Shaibu last Saturday, allegedly gunned down 17-year old, Lawrence Baidoo, after supposedly mistaking the deceased and his friends for armed robbers, while they were on their way to a concert.

The second victim who sustained gunshot wounds and was admitted at the St. Benedict Hospital at Nchaban, has since been transferred to the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital for intensive care and treatment.

Detective Shaibu reportedly opened fire on the five students when he came across them on their way to a rap concert at Shama Junction.

One of the five students, Caroline Daddie, who narrated the incident to Citi News, stated that the police officer, without any provocation, opened fire on them after he called them armed robbers.

The Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Police Service in the Western Region, ASP Olivia Ewurabena Adiku, told Citi News the Police will not shield their own.

“The incident happened on Friday. The suspect, Detective Adjei Shaibu is in custody. One of the students who sustained injuries is in the hospital responding to treatment. He mentioned three other people who were with them and fortunately on Sunday evening, they were able to get the other two and they have also given their statements”.

“Currently, the investigation is ongoing and we hope that by the end of the investigation, we will be able to come up with what really happened. We want to assure the public that everything is being done to investigate the case and whoever is found culpable will face the law. The law will take its course so no one should feel the Police is trying to cover up for somebody.”
