Greater Accra Regional Minister Nominee, Ishamel Ashitey has said he will provide jobs for the teeming unemployed youth to prevent them for engaging in illegal activities, when approved by Parliament’s Appointments Committee.

He believes illegal activities, including the land guard menace is rife especially in the Greater Accra Region because most of the youth in the region are unemployed.

“People are taking advantage of these young men because they do not have jobs. That is why I am so happy with the one district, one factory policy. When we are able to give these people gainful employment, I think we will be able to reduce this land guard menace. “

The land guard menace is rife especially in the Greater Accra Region, where those involved are solely interested in safeguarding their paymasters’ interest in disputed lands.

In June 2013, Members of Parliament appealed to the Ghana Police Service to launch an all out war to eradicate the menace of land guards in the country but the problem is yet to be resolved.

About Ishmael Ashietey

Ishmael Ashitey is 62 years old and is a product of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, where he graduated in 1977 with a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering.

He also holds an Executive Master’s degree in Governance and Leadership from GIMPA. He worked as a Mechanical Engineer at the Accra Brewery Limited for 13 years.

He served as Member of Parliament for Tema East from 1996 to 2008, and between that period, he was, first, appointed as Minister of State for Fisheries from 2001 to 2003 by former President John Agyekum Kufuor. From 2003 to 2004, he was a Minister of State for Trade and Industry.

While in Parliament, he was the Deputy Ranking Member on the Mines and Energy Committee, a Member of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Member on the Committee on Communications and Chairman of the Government Assurances Committee.

He has been the Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party from 2010 to date. He is married with four children.

An electoral history lecturer at the University of Ghana, Alex Kaakyire Frempong has stated that the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) will win this year’s presidential election if it secures wins in the four swing regions of the country.

He said the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) will need to win in just two of such regions to win the elections.

Speaking at a public lecture on Wednesday in Accra, Mr Frempong said the Central Region will be a key decider on December 7, warning that, the region may ‘punish the NDC’ over some sensitive issues the government has failed to address.

“The Central Region is very sensitive to indecencies to its sons. There are questions about the circumstances surrounding the former President, there are questions about why the President’s wife, in the Brong Ahafo region, is on all the billboards and not Kwesi Amissah Arthur [who is from the Central Region].”

“I’m warning you that the Central Region is very particular about some of these little things,” he said.

He noted that three of the four swing regions were along the country’s coast and vote for a preferred candidate based on issues regarding the supply of pre-mix fuel, pair-trawling and other events that affect fishing.

He said the New Patriotic Party may also suffer the consequence of some wranglings between Ashantis and the people of the Brong Ahafo region over the traditional leadership of Tuobodom.

‘Ghana’s swing regions’

The Greater Accra, Western, Central and Brong-Ahafo regions have been found with an inconsistent voting pattern with no inclination towards a particular political party.

The regions often determine which party emerges the eventual winner.

Ahead of this year’s elections, the two major parties, the NDC and the NPP have been seen holding strategic campaigns in the regions with messages aimed at addressing some key challenges in the regions.

The Greater Accra Region has become one of the key areas to monitor in the December polls because the two major political parties in the country – the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) are gearing to fight for supremacy in the region.

Previous electoral results suggest the party that wins majority of parliamentary seats in the Region, subsequently wins the national elections.

Therefore the two parties have made some audacious projections and adopted some strategies to win more votes in the region.

Both parties are seeking to win about 25 parliamentary seats in the region and garner huge votes for their presidential candidates – President John Mahama, NDC and Nana Akufo-Addo, NPP.

Out of the 34 seats in the region, the NDC and the NPP control 20 and 14 respectively while in the presidential race, John Mahama in the 2012 election had 52.31% and Akufo-Addo, 46.92.

NPP launches regional campaign in Tema

The NPP over the weekend launched its Greater Accra Regional campaign in Tema in a bid to take hold of nine more parliamentary seats and increase Nana Addo’s vote margin to 58%.

Throwing more light on their plan on the Citi Breakfast Show, the Greater Regional Chairman of the NPP, Ishmael Ashitey said the party is doing everything possible to meet the target.

“We are confident of achieving the target because of the policies that we’ve put into our campaign and the number of people we’ve sent to the field who are working and working very well and we are monitoring the activities and have been researching in the region and are very confident.”

“We lost about 8 constituencies marginally and we are confident that from the efforts we are putting in there, it is likely that we can get those numbers. When we do that then all that we have to fight for is only three constituencies. So it is not something we cannot achieve, we are looking at it and we are working towards that,” Mr. Ashitey added.

He also said they have corrected past mistakes to merit more than 25 seats in the region.

Meanwhile, the NDC which is also targeting some 60% of the presidential votes in the Region is hopeful it will meet its target.

Our targets are achievable – NDC

The NDC’s Greater Accra Regional Chairman, Ade Coker also speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show, said their targets are achievable.

“Greater Accra is a battle ground and we are very positive…we’ve always won Greater Accra. This time round, we are very positive, the conditions that are available to us indicate that we are going to get exactly that.”

Ade Coker also noted that they are solving problems in areas they are weak at.

“I go on the ground, I’ve been doing house to house for the past month and I know what is on the ground. And I know and feel the enthusiasm of the people on the ground so where there are mistakes we are correcting them. Where there are problems we are taking care of that. So as far as we are concerned we are positive on our foresight.”

The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, Nana Akufo-Addo, has taken a dig at President John Mahama’s capacity to lead the country.

Nana Addo stated that he (John Mahama) “can’t do the job, he’s struggling.”

Nana Addo made the remarks at a rally in the Okai Koi Central constituency today (October 29).

According to Nana Addo, “The people saying that the Volta Region is their World Bank should stand aside, everyone in Ghana is looking for change. One thing that all Ghanaians know is that John Mahama cannot do the job, he’s struggling. They will say a lot of things against me but I am not bothered.”

Nana Addo also said that he won’t make promises that he knows cannot be fulfilled.

“I won’t promise anything that I know I can’t deliver, I won’t lie to Ghanaians. Their Green books shows roads that they say they have constructed but those roads are in a very bad shape. When you vote for me, I will do all the things I have promised.”

Nana Akufo-Addo started his campaign tour of Accra today and is scheduled to go to Okai Koi Central, Okai Koi South and Ablekuma South constituencies.

He also met with the Chief Imam earlier today before addressing the supporters.

His campaign train has so far been to the Western, Volta, Ashanti, and the Greater Accra Regions.
