An Accra High Court has dismissed Accra Great Olympics’ request to place an interlocutory injunction on the Ghana Premier League, paving the way for the competition to start this weekend.

In presenting their case, Olympics asked for an extension of the injunction period to one month within which the GFA would hear their protest against Elmina Sharks, but that has now been dismissed.

[contextly_sidebar id=”MF4jBC3xQ53kcKiynaDNcrmJoDoEcSeX”]The court said that it had no jurisdiction to rule on the matter as it was an internal matter which should be determined by the Ghana Football Association, GFA.

Great Olympics petitioned the GFA to allow them bring a protest against Elmina Sharks for fielding an unqualified player despite the expiration of the mandatory 72 hours to do so. But the petition was dismissed, forcing Olympics to head to court to seek redress.

Olympics wanted the court to force the GFA to accept their petition which would result in Elmina Sharks being docked points, essentially condemning them to relegation while Olympics are reinstated in their stead.

The GFA and Olympics tried an out of court settlement of the matter, but two meetings between the two parties failed to resolve the impasse.

Olympics have twice brought injunctions against the start of the league, which was originally scheduled to start on the weekend of February 10.

Great Olympics head coach, Tom Strand, has said that his players were very prepared to face Kotoko and thus, they were able to show their best hand in their 2-0 win on Saturday at the Accra Sports Stadium in the Ghana Premier League.

Olympics found the win via goals from a first half Paul Fiatsi long-range stunner and a second half goal from Francis Dzorpkata.

The victory moved Olympics to 13th place on 14 points. After the match, Strand paid tribute to the hard work of his players on the day.

“I felt that the boys were ready for this one. I saw from the training ground that there something going on. So, I knew that today was when we were going to answer the test from Kotoko. People are asking if this the turning point for us but I believe that the turning point is the fact that we are united and we are working together as a club.”

Strand also revealed that the absence of Godwin Attram from the dugout was down to other duties with Attram’s academy.

The academy is set to participate in a tournament in Holland and thus, the Black Stars player could not join Olympics. Olympics close out the first round of the Ghana Premier League with a trip to Berekum Chelsea.

Accra Great Olympics have secured a return to the Ghana Premier League after just a season in Division One.

The Wonder Club beat Mighty Jets 2-1 on Sunday in Teshie in a Zone 3 match to win the top spot with one match left.

However, the story could have been different for them. James Asare put Mighty Jets ahead in the first half but two goals from Maxwell Quaye gave Olympics the victory and a place in the elite division.

Great Olympics had to fight off competition in the zone from former Premier League campaigners, Heart of Lions and Okyeman Planners, which is owned by GFA Vice President, George Afriyie.

Zone 3 winners, Olympics, and Zone 2 winners, Elmina Sharks, owned by PPP Presidential candidate, Paa Kwesi Ndoum, will both play in next season’s Ghana Premier League.

A third winner from Division One will be required from Zone 1 to complete the Premier League slots next season. Bolga Stars lead with 51 points after 27 matches and Real Tamale United (RTU) are second on 47 points but have a game in hand.

Mighty Royals are third on 46 points with 26 matches played. Mighty Royals play Berekum Arenals on Wednesday September 28 and RTU face Berlin FC in Techiman on the same day.
