The Ministry of Roads and Highways says another underground tunnel which connects East Legon to Spintex in Accra, will be constructed and completed in six months.

This is expected to ease the torturous journey motorists on that route endure.

[contextly_sidebar id=”g8Dd0HJXBFhBIWLhksYbc6FqGKEOrjdQ”]Addressing the press on Wednesday after touring some roads in Accra, Minster for Roads and Highways, Kwasi Amoako-Atta, said reasonable amount of money will be used to construct the tunnel hence Ghanaians will get value for their money.

“Within the next 6 months, I have directed the team to create a second tunnel so that there will be continuous flow of traffic, instead of the current alternating flow that we are experiencing … Once we have the two systems in place, this traffic that we see will be a thing of the past.”

Meanwhile, the Minister has also indicated that, the current renovation works on the Achimota overpass will be completed in two weeks time.

“We are hoping that within two weeks, the Apenkwa bridge will be completed. We are working in earnest, and because of the inconveniences and the long queues that we witnessed, I have encouraged them, and directed that they should work extra hard and finish that project and get that big hole sealed.”

The Communications Director of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), has said that concerns about the size of President Akufo-Addo’s government are legitimate and in order, just as the party raised similar concerns while in opposition.

He however said the President believes he needs the numbers to honor the numerous promises he made to Ghanaians in the run up to the 2016 elections.

He suggested that the President must be given the benefit of doubt, and be judged by the outcome of his governance.

[contextly_sidebar id=”1tHzdcyStpFHwUQ3MeyE1XNhuydBK8xz”]The President, Nana Akufo-Addo, has come under heavy criticism after appointing more than one hundred (100) ministers to serve in his government; a move some electorates describe as betrayal of trust following pre-election assurances that he [Akufo-Addo] will ensure a prudent and efficient government.

But according to Nana Akomea, there will be no concerns if the president duly delivers on his promises regardless of the numbers.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, March 16, 2017, Nana Akomea admitted that, the size of the Akufo-Addo government, is the highest in the country’s history, but added that, his mandate and promises to Ghanaians were also the boldest and revolutionary.

Read his post below:

nana-akomea-post

It will be recalled that Mr. Akomea in March 2013 criticized the then government, led by John Mahama for its many ministerial appointments.

He said he was “horribly disappointed” in John Mahama for appointing 86 ministers and deputies then, to serve in his government.

But it appears Mr. Akomea has relaxed his stance on the size of government after his party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) broke the existing record of 93 ministers by the NPP’s John Agyekum Kufour.

Government has initiated re-conciliatory procedures in an attempt to resolve the chieftaincy stalemate in Dagbon and Nanung traditional areas.

The National Security, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs Ministers, on Wednesday March 1, 2017,  jointly paid a working visit to the Yendi Municipality.

They met with leaders of the two chieftaincy divides in the Dagbon State.

The Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs Minister, Samuel Kofi Dzamesi, told the Dagbon Regent that they were on a familiarization tour of the region.

“Our visit today is for us to introduce ourselves to you and to see the way forward in ensuring peace in the Northern Region.”

He expressed President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo’s disquiet about the incessant chieftaincy stalemate in Dagbon.

“President Nana Akufo Addo is very interested in ensuring peace, security, law and order in this country.”

He said government will find a permanent solution to the stalemate, and stressed the need for dialogue between the two factions.

According to him, government will corroborate with the traditional councils, and the regional and national house of chiefs to deal with all unresolved chieftaincy disputes in the country.

“We as a government puts security and peace issues ahead of everything because if there is no peace there wouldn’t be any development. We understand that development can come through our majesties, Imams and pastors, and that is why religious affairs is attached to the chieftaincy ministry.”

He however commended President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo for promising not to interfere in the Dagbon chieftaincy dispute. He also showed appreciation to government functionaries’ frequent visits to his palace.

They later met the Regent for the Abudus, Boling-Lana Mahamadu Abdulai and his elders. The Boling-Lana assured government of maximum peace and unity in Yendi and its environs.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration under Nana Akufo-Addo, appears to have softened its stance on the two Guantanamo detainees who were accepted into the country last year.

The NPP then in opposition, had raised concerns about the decision to bring the two into the country.

President Nana Addo, who was Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) at the time, had described the decision as yet another example of the failure of leadership on the part of President John Mahama.

He argued that, the two should not have been allowed into the country since they pose a security threat to the country.

“Ghanaian people may well have been spared the disquieting anxiety, in this time of justifiably heightened fear of global terrorism, that we are being led by a President who, ostensibly in the name of compassion, prefers to ignore laws designed to defend the most sensitive area of all, our nation’s security,” Nana Addo said.

But taking his turn at the vetting of ministerial nominees on Friday night, Minister Nominee for Defence, Dominic Nitiwul , said government will take some factors into consideration before making a definite decision on the two.

“If you have a very peaceful country, what many people would not want to do is to invite trouble to themselves and that’s why I think that at the time his Excellency the President Nana Addo Akufo Addo made that statement, he made it in the light that there was no need to invite trouble for us to put ourselves on the terrorist map in that particular period when Ghana didn’t need to do that.

“We have done one year now, intelligence will change, the situation will change. As we sit today, the government at that time analysed intelligence and took a decision. It is the same way this government is going to analyse all the intelligence related to this particular people and take a decision. As I sit now, intelligence will lead us as to the best way the government will take the decision regarding this particular thing.”
