Global Media Alliance (GMA), a leading communication agency in Ghana, yesterday joined many organizations in the world to celebrate International Women’s Day. At a seminar organized by GMA for their female employees, the CEO of Afribiz Group Limited, Mrs. Janet Sunkwa-Mills, cautioned participants to be mindful of their brand and how they portray themselves as their personal brand plays a key role in their daily activities.

International Women’s Day is annually marked on March 8 to recognize the achievements of women in society in social, economic, cultural and political areas. In recent times, many women as much as they keep their roles as the homemaker, have also taken up career roles in the corporate and entrepreneurial world.

The global theme for this year’s celebration is ‘Press for Progress’.

Speaking on the subject “Building my Career through Effective Communication and Packaging”, Mrs. Sunkwa-Mills said “It is important for us as ladies to pay some attention to how we look because our appearance, which is entirely our brand, says a lot about us before we communicate with words. It doesn’t mean you should look all expensive, but rather presentable wherever you find yourself”.

Speaking on the global theme for this year’s celebration, Mrs. Sunkwa-Mills further encouraged women to utilize their talents and skills in building their personal brands.

According to her “building your brand is not all about how you look but also how to communicate, connect and utilize your talent and skills”. She added, “It is important to set personal values and principles buttressed with your talents and skills, and in consistency so as not to confuse people’s perception about you”.

Mrs. Mills who is also the Founder and Manager of Jane’M Salon and Spa further urged women present to be confident in who they are and what they do.

A Director at GMA, Ms. Emma Wenani, stated that “the theme for this year’s celebration of International Women’s Day is inspiring enough for us as women to pursue our ambitions to the very end. Women are unique in their contributions and in their roles in society”.

She also encouraged her female colleagues to demonstrate their skills with determination to be able to achieve their dreams while remaining particularly true to their personal brands.

Many organizations across the globe organize and execute various activities including workshops, donations, seminars and fora among others to appreciate the work of women and also show their support to them.

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has warned the government that its members will “begin series of action” if it fails to fully implement the unresolved concerns regarding their market premiums and reduced pensions.

It has since given the government a 5-month ultimatum to address the matter.

[contextly_sidebar id=”GB7B4assdEnYvApIivXiyddkCDa80FTy”]Doctors across the country in 2015 embarked on a nationwide strike that lasted a month, to demand negotiated and signed conditions of service documents.

The strike was called off following assurances their concerns were being addressed.

Several months after, the market premium is yet to be completed amidst reminders and threats from the Medical Association.

The Association, however says if the government does not fully implement the market premium by April 2018, it will take action.

Speaking the 59th annual and scientific meeting in Kumasi, newly elected President of the GMA, Dr. Frank Ankobeah, says members will ensure all outstanding issues are resolved.

“In the ruling of the National Labour Commission (NLC) in a compulsory arbitration in November 2011, the market premium was a percentage of the basic salary of the doctors. The above ruling was implemented for only a year, after which the government unilaterally decided to make it a fixed figure contrary to the ruling of the NLC. The GMA therefore decides that if all the issues of full implementation of conditions of service and market premiums together with the related matters of conversion difference and reduced pensions are not dealt with by the government immediately, the GMA by 1800 GMT April 30, 2018, will begin a series of activities that will definitely affect the current industrial climate,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Medical Association and 11 other labour unions are calling on the government to transfer their pension contributions spanning 2010 to 2016, to their custodian banks rather than being kept in their temporary pensions account where it accrues no interest.

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has expressed concerns over what they describe as government’s neglect of qualified doctors and dentists across the country.

According to the Association, government’s refusal to post qualified doctors and dentists across the country is taking a toll on Ghana’s health care delivery system.

[contextly_sidebar id=”gh7qNuhFLV9mKagR1nUkLu0Otpyf8fEZ”]Speaking at the 59th Annual General Conference of the (GMA) in Kumasi, the President of the GMA, DCOP Dr. E. Ewusi-Emmim, called on the Ministry of Health to address the issue of unemployment among health workers, since it is affecting health delivery in the country.

“The GMA is gravely concerned about the creeping incidence of unemployment for medical doctors and dentists in the country. Ghana still suffers from abysmal doctor to patient ratio. Several communities and districts in the country do not have medical doctors and dentists to serve them at all, while strained manpower languishes at home.”

“Such facilities continue to be manned by single individuals who tend to be overworked and in most cases cannot even take their annual leave. It is worrying that newly qualified medical doctors and dentists as well as those who have completed their house jobs are in some cases unemployed, wasting away to the detriment of health care delivery in the country.”

Frustrated jobless Doctor writes to Citi FM, cries over neglect

His comments come weeks after some 245 trained, but unemployed doctors questioned the efforts of the Health and Finance Ministries in absorbing them into the public service.

The doctors, who graduated in 2014, indicated that all efforts to secure financial clearance for their absorption have proved futile, while many hospitals lack doctors, putting the lives of patients at risk.

In a heartfelt petition to Citi News to highlight their plight, a doctor, John-Diego Kosoe, lamented the dire situation of his colleagues who are idle.

This, according to Mr. Kosoe has even compelled some doctors to leave Ghana for greener pastures.

The petitioner noted that, “out of frustration, I know 3 of my colleagues who contracted huge personal loans and left the country for Germany, just to hustle out there, to do German language courses and get absorbed into their system.”

As it stands now, Ghana has one doctor attending to about 10, 450 patient. This is far below the one doctor to 5000 patients ratio per the recommendations of the Commonwealth, and the 1 doctor to 1,320 patients per the recommendations from WHO.

Government has commenced the payment of all tier-two pension monies owed some aggrieved public-sector workers.

According to the Minister of Employment and Labour relations, the process to ensure the transfer of the monies into the registered schemes of the workers have started.

[contextly_sidebar id=”Aa4FZYTQrrlsrqn5PtvZTIhxL449wRNN”]His comment was in reaction to threats from twelve labor unions to embark on a strike over the transfer of their monies which has been in arrears since 2010.

The labor unions gave government up to Wednesday, November 16 to commence the transfer process but according to the Minister, the government is committed to ensuring that their concerns were addressed to maintain the sanity of the labor front as soon as possible

Haruna Iddrisu, in an interview on the Citi Breakfast Show, said, “Government has transferred the money to the National Pensions Regulations authority. The bone of contention is whether we should transfer it to the custodian bank or the controller and accountant general. The workers, pursuant to the law and per the provisions of the law of the second tier insist that it must be a direct transfer from the controller and account general. I do pray and hope that we get through with the other party of it today, which is about reimbursement.”

He added that government taking measures to ensure that monies kept in the pensions’ account at the Bank of Ghana were properly accounted for and interests accruing on it.

“I ask them to keep the industrial peace and harmony of the country and to keep the sanity of the labor environment to ensure that there is a peaceful industrial atmosphere before, during and after the elections but trust that every commitment we have made in the roadmap will be honored by government,” he said.

Background

A meeting between the various labor unions including the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), and the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) on Tuesday, November 15 on the matter ended inconclusively with the Unions threatening a strike.

The Chairman of the Forum of Public Sector Labour Unions and Executive Secretary of CLOGSAG, Dr Isaac Bampoe told Citi News in an earlier interview that “our demand was that the second tier should be transferred to our custodian banks but as we speak now, nothing has been done…If it is transferred tomorrow then we do not have a problem but if not then we will have a meeting on the 16th to decide the way forward.”

He added that, “The communique that was issued was very clear that if by 16th nothing happens then we are going to lay down our tools. What we are saying is that the money should be transferred to our custodian banks. We started this fight two years ago.”
