Despite announcing that its Rector, Dr. Wilberforce Sefakor Dzisah is on leave, the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ) has advertised the position, calling on qualified persons to apply.

The Rector, according to GIJ, proceeded on a “voluntary annual leave” in December 2017, following allegations of infractions in procurement practices and other issues.

[contextly_sidebar id=”I9001Zd8QcrntEXuMzkb03uXPtg2ByYz”]A four-member committee was subsequently tasked to investigate the issue.

Head of Communications Department at the Institute, Dr. Modestus Fosu, was asked to serve as acting rector, whereas the acting Deputy Rector, Ebow Afful, was also asked to return to the classroom to teach and resume his role as head of department.

The Registrar of the Institute, Perry K.K OFosu, was also ordered to proceed on leave.

While it is unclear whether Dr. Dzisah has been sacked or not, GIJ has advertised three supposed vacant positions up for grabs including Rector, Deputy Rector and Deputy Registrar positions.

“GIJ seeks to employ qualified persons with the requisite academic and professional backgrounds in the key administrative positions of Rector, Deputy Rector and Deputy Registrar,” the advert in the Daily Graphic Newspaper on Monday, February, 26, 2018 added.

Meanwhile, attempts to get further details on the advertisement have proved futile.

The ad in the Daily Graphic

Dr. Wilberforce Dzisah was appointed Rector of GIJ in September 2014 succeeding David Newtown, who retired on August 31, 2014.

Before his appointment, Dr. Dzisah was the Vice-Rector of the Institute.

He also served as the Dean of the Faculty of Communications and Social Science in the Institute.

EOCO invited to assist with investigations at GIJ

The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), according to the State newspaper, Daily Graphic in its February 13, 2018 publication, was invited to assist with investigations related to alleged procurement infractions by the management of GIJ under the leadership of Dr. Wilberforce Dzisah as Rector.

The newspaper said the Governing Council of GIJ, chaired by Professor Kwasi Ansu-Kyeremeh, invited EOCO to assist in the investigations.

“A letter dated February 7, 2017 signed by the GIJ Council Chairman to EOCO indicated that the council was investigating the operation of the institute from September 2014 to date. The letter stated that the EOCO was to assist, including forensic audit, in establishing any short-comings that might have caused the institute to lose property or finances and, if any, their prompt retrieval. According to the letter, the GIJ Council is principally interested in any role and actions, criminal or otherwise, some persons might have played, or indulged in, to lead to loss or wrongdoing during the period.”

According to the Daily Graphic, those mentioned in the letter were Dr. Wilberforce Dzisah, Rector, since 2013, and currently on leave, Dr. Ebo Afful, Acting Vice Rector until January 31, 2018; Perry P.K. Ofosu, Registrar, who is currently on leave; and Akwasi Sekyere Boateng, Procurement Officer who is still at post, and any other member of faculty or staff.

Dr. Joyce Rosalind Aryee, the Founder of Salt & Light Ministries, has urged postgraduate students of the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ) to be agents of great change in their respective fields, in order to spur national development.

Delivering the keynote address at the third congregation of the School of Graduate Studies and Research (SoGSaR) of the GIJ, on Friday, on the theme: “Communication as a Catalyst for National Development”, Dr. Aryee said, in order to be great catalysts for development, it was important for communications professionals to be unifiers and not dissent causers.

“…To be great catalysts, you graduating students ought to remember that you are supposed to be unifiers; you’re to be unifiers rather than people who cause dissent and chaos,” she said.

She stressed the need for communicators to strive to understand people in order to help in development, adding that, communication for development from sociological point of view, involved understanding people, their beliefs and values as well as their social and cultural norms.

She said, it was only in knowing better, who people were, what they stood for, that they could create the harmony that will lead to a society strengthened by its difference and not destroyed by them.

“My opinion is that communication processes can be used to enhance people’s capacities for understanding, negotiating and making appropriate decisions and also capable of empowering individuals and communities to take actions to improve their lives,” she said.

She said GIJ had made Ghana proud by producing a considerable number of communication experts, who have put their expertise at the service of the nation to aid the country’s development.

‘The effort being made by GIJ in this regard re-echoes Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s strong and fervent beliefs in the power of communication to bring about development’, Dr. Aryee noted, adding that, the nation’s efforts towards development through communication were tied to investments in human capital through education and training of individuals.

She emphasized that, in order for Ghana to achieve further development through communication, there was the need for quality communication experts, who could properly communicate policies, decisions and plans that were consistent with international communication trends.

‘We need to sharpen our knowledge and skills on regular basis to ensure that our country does not lack the needed manpower to enhance communication meant for our development’, she said.

Professor Kwesi Anso Kyereme, the Chairman of GIJ’s Governing Council, in his opening remarks, encouraged the graduates to let their professional communication skills be their guide.

He said, success in development was contingent on how intended beneficiaries perceived themselves, adding that, if there was no communication there was not going to be any development.

‘I will encourage you to choose the self-employment option, use your own imagination, cultivated from your critical examination of ideas and sense of communication that you have studied here; that catalyses national development’ ’, he said.

Professor Kyereme urged the graduating students to sharpen their skills on regular basis by reading extensively.

The graduation ceremony conferred Masters of Arts degrees on 178 students, who were taken through 15 months postgraduate education in four communication specialties.

Sixteen students graduated in Journalism, 70 in Public Relations, 66 in Development -Communication and 26 in Media Management.

The Ghana Institute of Journalism [GIJ], has lifted a ban it imposed a year ago on the charging of mobile phones and laptops on campus.

This comes after the several petitions from the student leadership over the matter.

The management of the school earlier in 2017 imposed the ban supposedly because students were misusing sockets in the various lecture halls.

Among the reasons cited for the imposition of the ban was the lack of concentration by students who fidget with their phones and laptops while lecturers were ongoing.

The General Secretary of the Students Representative Council of GIJ, Nathaniel Alpha, in a statement announcing the decision by management on January 28, 2018, said, the lifting of the ban takes immediate effect.

Some students of the school have had their mobile phones and laptops seized by school authorities for flouting the ban when it was in force. They often had to go through tedious administrative processes before retrieving their devices.

Many students complained that the ban was regressive and negatively impacted on their academic work. However, the complaints did not yield positive results.

Nathaniel Alpha said, “The SRC President, aware of the seriousness of the issue, forwarded these concerns to the Governing Council of the Institute, and made submissions at Council sittings to this effect… after several days, weeks and months of petitions, letters, meetings and the deployment of various advocacy techniques, management backed by a decision of the school’s Governing Council; which the SRC President is a member of, has revoked this decision.”

While noting that all electrical sockets were being reconnected to enable students use them, he urged the student populace to “handle the sockets well.”

The Students’ Representative Council of the Ghana Institute of Journalism has chastised a member of Occupy Ghana, Sydney Casely-Hayford, for alleged ‘sexist’ remarks he made against the female students of the University.

They have called on the anti-corruption campaigner to retract and apologise for his comments which they described as “an insult to the values of the Ghana Institute of Journalism.”

[contextly_sidebar id=”AWAXrTjB34lhiVVZYJx5PqFvKBxeLpDF”]“Casely Hayford must apologize and retract his statement against female students of the Ghana Institute of Journalism. The SRC finds his statement to be very sexist, unfortunate, unwarranted, unguided, without basis and an insult to the values of the Ghana Institute of Journalism,” the statement from GIJ’s SRC said.

Speaking on Citi FM’s news analysis programme, The Big Issue on Saturday, Sydney Casely-Hayford advised students of GIJ to focus more on empowering themselves than on trivial things such as fashion.

According to him, most of the students at the University, a large number of whom are females, are more concerned about what they wear than their training.

“Go to the Ghana Institute of Journalism, GIJ, and look at the students who are coming out, majority of them are females and when you look at it, you will see that it is more of a fashion parade…so when we are talking about quality of journalism, they should tone down on the fashion and get a little bit more serious with the actual content,” he added.

Mr. Casely-Hayford made the remarks on the back of President Nana Akufo-Addo’s encounter with the media last Wednesday.

The President met some journalists in the country at the Flagstaff House where he was asked questions on a number of topics spanning various sectors.

Ghanaians subsequently lambasted some of the journalists, accusing them of asking irrelevant questions with a report by the Media Foundation for West Africa also questioning the relevance of some of the questions that were asked.

Below is the full statement from the GIJ SRC

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Casely Hayford must apologize and retract his statement against female students of the Ghana Institute of Journalism.

The Students’ Representative Council of the Ghana Institute of Journalism has read a very unfortunate comment attributed to Mr. Casely Hayford of Occupy Ghana ( refer to image for details). The statement was said to have been made on Citi FM’s Saturday flagship program “The Big Issues” on 20th January 2018 and captured in several commentary on social media.

According to him, female students of the Ghana Institute of Journalism are more “interested in fashion parades than empowering themselves”.

The SRC finds his statement to be very sexist, unfortunate, unwarranted, unguided, without basis and an insult to the values of the Ghana Institute of Journalism.

Mr. Casely Hayford in his statement sought to suggest that GIJ female students are only interested in fashion and that should partially be blamed for the “falling” standards in Journalism in the country.

GIJ SRC rejects his assertion completely and would like to  call on him to do the honourable thing of apologizing and retracting his statement.

We would also like to use this opportunity to draw his attention to the following:

  1. GIJ remains the topmost Journalism Institution in Ghana. Till date, GIJ has produced the finest of Journalists and Communication professionals who have served and continue to serve this country in various capacities. The media ecosystem is incomplete without the contribution of the Ghana Institute of Journalism and especially its female students and products. GIJ is still in the business of producing journalists who are very professional.
  2. GIJ has a robust practical teaching and learning structure that is designed to ensure that students of the Institute come out ready for the inky fraternity. If Casely Hayford and other like-minded people who support such sexist comment care to know, much of the country’s finest female Journalists and Communication professionals have been trained at the Ghana Institute of Journalism. The list is a very tall and non-exhaustive one-the likes of;
  3. Adjoa Yeboah Afari

2.Gifty Anti

  1. Naa Ashorkor

4.Kate Addo

  1. Mabel Aku Banesseh

and a host of others who are not “engaging in fashion parades” in the industry but are shaping the course of Communication and Journalism in the country.

The current female students of the Institute are embarking on similar paths these stalwarts took during their stay at GIJ as many of them are taking up internship opportunities and chasing excellence as far as the learning of the profession is concerned.

It is even more interesting to note that the comment by Mr. Hayford was about the performance of Journalists at the recent Presidential Press Encounter; an issue the SRC has already addressed and made recommendations on.

The said recommendations have been published widely on various online portals.

It is very unfortunate that an opinion leader like Casely Hayford would not use his platform and such opportunities to discuss the quality of the state of Journalism independent of schools and of gender. The quality of Journalism, he and others should be minded, is a product of many things in this county  and not necessarily the training Institute or the conduct of a specific gender. It borders on the vision of media houses, the ability of the media houses to employ professionals, enforcement of standards by regulators and stakeholders and several other contingencies. It is shocking that he, who is supposed to know better, would reduce the discussion to such sexist commentary.

Casely Hayford has to apologize for his misrepresentation of females in GIJ and GIJ at large.

Signed

Citi FM on October 6 honoured the best graduating student in broadcast journalism at the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ).

Miss Ruth Bazing was adjudged the best broadcast journalist for the 2017 graduating class at GIJ’s 11th Congregation ceremony held on Friday.

She was presented with a brand new laptop and an audio recorder from Citi FM. She also received a certificate of honour.

Speaking to citifmonline.com after the ceremony, an elated Ruth expressed her appreciation to Citi FM for the award.

“I think it’s basically determination and sticking to the books. I believe academic excellence doesn’t come from cramming but allowing yourself to understand what is being taught and replicating everything in your own understanding. God plays a role too, without God none of these could have been achieved,” she added.

Ruth stated that she intended to pursue a masters degree with the hope of taking up teaching – a passion of hers – in the future

She also advised young students to “set their priorities straight if they want to follow in my footsteps.”

“I love having fun but I know when to. Know when to sit by the books and when to relax and have fun.”

A number of Ruth’s mates praised her work ethic and commitment and backed her to achieve greater heights in the future.

“I know Ruth as someone who is hardworking and one who likes to study. I think the school considered her deserving of an award and I wish her well,” Sandra Hyde who was a classmate of Ruth’s for two years said.

Management of the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ), has scheduled its 11th Congregation, which was postponed indefinitely due to the absence of a school governing council to Friday 6th October.

The 11th congregation, which was earlier slated to take place on September 22nd under the Ministry of Education’s National Council for Tertiary Education (NCTE), was postponed after a new council was formed some days to the planned date.

[contextly_sidebar id=”oY5tguznxXWS05IgpHfnKBtcYX7azHCw”]The newly constituted governing council, which was inaugurated by the Ministry of Education, replaces the erstwhile council which exhausted its four years term.

The Registrar of the Institute, Mr. Perry Ofosu, affirmed that with the approval of the governing council, the 11th Congregation is set to come off come Friday October 6th.

According to him, “because the Council was inaugurated very close to the time, it was not prudent to have the congregation” adding that, it is the “Council’s responsibility to confer the degrees on the qualified students; and it is the Chairman of Council who does that on behalf of Council.”

“The newly constituted Council would have to be informed on everything that is being done for them to abreast themselves, and therefore the decision was made that it should be postponed. So academic board later on proposed that the congregation should take place on the 6th of October and Council approved it; and once the Governing Council has approved, then it means it will take place of the 6th” he explained.

“When we organized the graduate congregation, we sought permission from NCTE, so the NCTE Executive Secretary stood in as a stand in Chairman, as the regulator; and that one was because there was no council in place. But now that a council is in place, council would have to take the responsibility of conferring [the degrees],” he added.

GIJ’s Governing Council

The new council is under the Chairmanship of Professor Kwasi Ansu-Kyeremeh.

Other members of the Council include Dr. Wilberforce S. Dzisah (Rector/Member), Dr. Mrs. Margaret Amoakohene (Head, School of Communication Studies, Legon), Dr. Kweku Rockson (Ministry of Education Representative), Mr. Akwasi Owusu Agyeman (Media Industry Representative), Ms. Adjoa Yeboah Afari (Alumni Representative), Mr. Edwin Amankwa (Minister’s Nominee), Mrs. Harriet Akua Karikari (Convocation Representative), and Ms. Monica Korkor Bleboo (Minister’s Nominee).

The term of the previous council ended in November 2016. Every tertiary institution operates under a council. The council is referred to as the governing council, and is responsible for determining policies that are implemented by management.

Management will make proposals, but council has to approve before implementation; and it includes some expenditure. The council is responsible for awarding certificates.

He urged graduates from the Ghana Institute of Journalism’s Graduate School to endeavour to add value to the nation’s planning through their through research.

Prof Yankah said this at the second graduation ceremony of the GIJ’s School of Graduate Studies and Research (SOGSAR) in Accra on Saturday.

[contextly_sidebar id=”8g6Z5hVj9t6GhVzEG1cC5FESRKrhSKIQ”]“…where planning in 20th century Africa was fed on empty data, here we come with tools that can change the destiny of this country, the destiny of journalism and communication,” he said said to the graduates.

Prof Yankah said African governments planned based on conjecture instead of reliable data, with journalists having to reach out to sources outside for information about their countries.

“It amounts to going beyond yourself to get information about yourself,” he noted.

The event was held under the theme: “The role of communication in bridging the gap between academia and industry”.

Prof Yankah said the disconnect between academia and industry was due to a lack of synergy between both parties.

To address this, he said, there is the need for institutions to talk to each other, understand each other, enter each other’s world and act with one accord.

Prof Yankah said while there was unemployment at various levels, some employers were looking for good calibre candidates and those that they will have to retrain.

He said that graduate training should help address unemployment as it took students to higher levels where they seek to impart the knowledge they have to younger ones.

Professor Mohammed Salifu, Executive Secretary of the National Commission on Tertiary Education (NCTE) and stand-in chair of the GIJ Governing Council, which is yet to be fully constituted, said government was in the process of constituting new Governing councils for public tertiary education institutions.

“…it would not be long before the Ghana Institute of Journalism has its own full-fledged Governing Council in place,” he said.

Prof Salifu commended the GIJ for its strides in finding a niche area in Communications and also for its graduate and research programmes, but urged academic staff to engage more in research as it was the bedrock of academic excellence.

He said the graduate and research programmes provided a medium through which the university could create new knowledge and innovations to address societal problems and to demonstrate its relevance to the national economy.

Prof Salifu also pledged the NCTE’s support for the University and advised faculty to use their book and research allowances as intended.

“A national research fund is also in the offing to provide the resources for competitive research into key areas of national policy,” he said.

Dr Wilberforce Dzisah, Rector of the GIJ, commended the second batch of graduates for their patience and tolerance in enduring the ‘pain and agony of waiting all this while to be graduated’.

He said the GIJ’s graduate programmes have gained popularity and influence, with the number of applicants admitted increasing from 135 in 2015 when the programme started, to 243 students expected to start in September 2017.

“The rapid growth is matched by the quality of faculty available…95 percent of those engaged at the postgraduate level have terminal degrees (Ph.D),” he said.

Some aspirants in the Student Representative Council (SRC) elections to be conducted at the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ), have raised red flags over what they call outrageous filing fees charged by the school’s Electoral Commission.

The Electoral Commission of the school has increased the filing fees by hundred percent.

Presidential aspirants who paid GHC 500 cedis, are now required to pay GHC 1,000, while the fee for rest of the portfolios, have been increased from GHC 400 to GHC 800.

In a Citi News interview with one of the presidential aspirants, Bashit Mohammed, he alleged that, the move is a deliberate one by the student leadership to frustrate some of the aspirants to give others an upper hand in the elections.

“This is a well-planned agenda to frustrate some of us. There have been issues and counter allegations and in fact, empirical evidence that these people have a candidate in mind. There has been that kind of rot in the system of which they think that with their preferred choice of candidates in that capacity, they will shield that kind of rot in the system.”

Another presidential aspirant, Jonathan Adjie Mawutor, said the action is in breach of the school’s electoral laws.

He thus cautioned that he and his colleagues will fight for the right thing to be done.

Meanwhile, the Public Relations Officer of the School’s SRC, Stephen Agyapong, said the increase is a legitimate move to generate funds for the SRC Fund which is in dire need.

He also debunked claims of a diabolical move to frustrate some aspirants, insisting that the specified amounts will not be reduced.

Stanbic Bank Ghana has donated an amount of ten thousand Ghana cedis (¢10,000) to the Students’ Aid Fund (SAFund) of the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) of the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ).

The donation on Wednesday, March 16, 2017, was in fulfillment of a promise made by Mr. Alhasaan Andani, the Managing Director of Stanbic Bank at the launch of the fund in September 2016.

The Students’ Aid Fund (SAFUND), is a special scheme initiated by the President of the GIJ SRC, Benjamin Avornyotse, to support needy students of the institute.

In a statement of appreciation, the President thanked the Managing Director for his commitment towards education and the preservation of Ghana’s future human resource.

“I am very grateful to Stanbic Bank and Mr. Andani for the goodwill shown to the GIJ SRC. This is the first corporate donation we have received for the SAFund, and we are extremely appreciative of the belief the Bank has shown in the initiative. I solemnly promise that the funds would be disbursed wisely and indeed be used to support brilliant students who are facing financial difficulties,” President Avornyotse said.

Speaking at the launch of SAFund last year, Mr. Andani commended the GIJ SRC for creating such a scheme to support its students.

He encouraged other councils to follow this example to prove that they are indeed committed to the welfare of their students.
