Government has announced a 10 percent increase in the daily minimum wage for workers.

A statement issued by the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations and cited by Citi Business News, said the decision was taken by the National Tripartite Committee.

The statement was jointly signed by Employment and Labour Relations Minister Ignatius Baffuor Awuah, for government, Terence Darko, for the Employers Association , and Dr Yaw Baah, for Labour.

By this, the new minimum wage is 9.68 cedis, up from 8.80 cedis, and expected to take effect on January 1, 2018.

“Accordingly, the committee directs that any establishment, institution or organization whose Daily Minimum Wage is below the new National Daily Minimum wage should adjust its wages upward with effect from 1st January, 2018,”

The statement explained that the conclusion was reached on Tuesday, July 11 after a meeting held by government, labour and the employers association.

“Any establishment, institution or organization that flouts the new rate shall be sanctioned in accordance with law,” it said.

President John Mahama’s campaign promise to create 3 million jobs if given the nod to serve a second term is a ploy to sway voters.

According to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) who have accused the President of failing to deliver on all promises  he made on job creation in his first term of office.

[contextly_sidebar id=”MwjY45p02bIJ9GeXdaEvu5lWdw3K7B7M”]The National Youth Organizer of the NPP, Sammy Awuku the youth of the country must be careful not to fall for any of the President’s promises of job creation since it is only to get them to vote him to stay in power for a second term.

Speaking on Eyewitness News on Tuesday [November 8], Mr Awuku said government has consistently failed to ensure a vibrant economy by crippling various industries and private companies in the country through unsound policies and economic mismanagement.

He said it was interesting the President continues to make more promises when he is yet to fulfill those he made in the past.

“We are in an electioneering period and we have heard the NDC make all kinds of promises led by the candidate of the NDC, President  Mahama. Among the things he stated over the past few days is to create 3 million jobs for the youth of our country and we find it mind boggling and an interesting statement to make apart from its sad nature,” he said.

“You’ve had 8 years of Mr Mahama’s president of Ghana and within this 8 years, a borrowing spree of $4 billion and blowing of over GH¢150 billion. The biggest legacy of this administration will be unemployment and the biggest national security issue today is unemployment issue,” he added.

President Mahama in October this year said his government has set a target of creating some 3 million jobs to address the high level of unemployment in the country.

In an official statement on his website, he said government has put in place practicable strategies to achieve the target in his second four-year term.

“Three million jobs and a vibrant economy in a highly inclusive democracy, where everybody counts: this is my pledge to all of you!” the statement said.

‘NPP comments against NDC desperate’

Meanwhile, the Deputy Campaign spokesperson of the NDC, Felix Ofosu Kwakye has described Sammy Awuku’s comments as desperate attempts to cover up for their failure while in power.

According to him, the NPP cannot match up its works to what the NDC has done in the areas of Education, Health, Agriculture and the other sectors of the economy.

In an interview on Eyewitness News, he said, “Ghanaians are fully aware that they [NPP] were completed hopeless when they were in government with regards to job creation. Ghanaians know that we the NDC have done our optimum best to create jobs,” he said.

President John Dramani Mahama has promised more jobs for the nation’s youth, if re-elected to serve a second four-year term of office.

He hinted that 400,000 of them were going to be recruited under a youth employment programme his government was going to run.

They would be engaged in community health, policing and fire service, alongside training in various trades and vocations.

President Mahama, who was addressing a political rally in Kade as part of this six-day election campaign in the Eastern Region, said there would also be a sanitation module.

He told the people that the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) was not collapsing as their political opponents would want everybody to believe and said the reverse was indeed the case.

The scheme had seen substantial growth in membership, he said, adding that as of the close of last year, 29 million had attended the health facilities, using the NHIS cards.

President Mahama said the figure compared with the 2005-2008 total of nine million hospital attendance, clearly showed that the claim that the NHIS was crumbling was completely false.

He indicated that more money from oil receipts would be put into the health insurance scheme to enhance its sustainability amid the tremendous expansion over the years.

Mr. Kofi Adams, National Campaign Coordinator of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), accused the largest opposition party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of peddling falsehood to deceive voters.

He said that was why it was running away from the challenge to engage in a presidential debate and urged the people to ignore, what he labeled as the “lies and deception”.

He rallied NDC supporters to reach out to every voter and assist them to understand why they should return the party to power.
