A board member of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards, Nii Ayi Tagoe, has disclosed that rapper Medikal, had only 13 votes for New Artiste of the Year at the 2017 awards.

According to Nii, who made the revelation on the Starr FM’s ‘Morning Zoo,’ the general public that seemed to have shown support to Medikal prior to the awards, did not really vote for him.

“The people who made noise for these artistes on social media didn’t really go out to vote. Medikal had 13 votes from the general public for the New Artiste of the Year category,” he said.

Before the awards, Medikal was tipped as a potential winner of the New Artiste of the Year and the Artiste of the Year categories by most music pundits. Even though he had the highest nominations of 7, he did not win any of them.

Although the organisers have published results for the nominees from the votes by the Academy, Board and General Public, the breakdown for each of these three voting groups is unknown to the public.

In the wake of this, Nii’s statement comes as a serious revelation about the VGMA voting pattern and some have suggested that the breakdown of all the categories be published to allay people doubts and enable the artiste to know how they really fared in the awards.

About a week ago, patrons of gospel songstress Piesie Esther’s album launch at Alisa Hotel were surprised to have seen traditional priest Nana Agradaa in attendance.

Nana Agradaa’s presence at the launch, stoked controversy as regards the propriety or otherwise of a traditional priest gracing a programme of a gospel artiste.

Pieise Esther had explained that she invited Nana Agradaa not because of her priesthood or money but because she had known her personally for a long time.

“I called her because she is a person I’ve known for a very long time but not as a fetish priestess. She has been buying from my boutique at Darkuman so she has been my costumer. Even before she became fetish priestess, she was also my church member at Pastor Apae Life’s Great Light Worship Centre.

Even aside knowing her for years, people like her who were Christians but left the Kingdom are the ones God says He wants so I don’t see anything wrong with her coming to the album launch.” Piesie Esther had told KMJ on Hitz FM.

However, in an another interview with award winning gospel minister OJ on Accra FM on whether he would ever invite a fetish priest to his show, the ‘Onipa Hia Mmoa’ singer answered in the negative.

“I will never invite a fetish priest to my programme. I won’t condemn it but I won’t do it. Certain draw your followers from the word and they stop following you. I can dye my hair, put on an earring and fix gold on my teeth but there are some people when they see that on you they can even decide not to patronise your music so I have to come clean and look simple so that people can identify with what I am doing,” he told Nana Romeo in the interview.

In a separate interview with citifmonline.com, the celebrated song writer noted that his statement was not a response to Piesie’s story because he was asked a general question by the host and he responded accordingly.

“I did not even know of the story in question until after the interview. But he asked a general question and I gave him a general answer. If he had asked the question with specific reference to Piesie Esther, I would have approached it accordingly,” he said.

Born Michael Oware Sakyi, Minister OJ has produced songs like ‘Etisen,’ ‘Adom ne Odo,’ ‘Obi Nya Wo Aye,’ ‘Ma Ye Se Wo Pen,’ ‘Onipa Hia Mmoa,’ among others.

The Ghana DJ Awards will honour Victor Kpakpo Addo, known in public life as Rev. Azigiza Jnr, with a Lifetime Achievement Award at its 2017 edition slated for Saturday, May 6 at the Silver Star Towers in Accra.

Speaking to Hitz FM’s morning show host KMJ on Thursday, the spokesperson for the award, Daddy Bosco revealed that the ‘retired’ disc jockey, who is now a reverend minister, will be given the special award for his contribution to the DJ profession.

“We are honouring Azigiza for his contribution to ‘deejaying’ in Ghana. For those who are quite old, they would remember the great work Azigiza did when he was at Joy FM. He was the hottest DJ at that time and we deem it fit to honour him,” he told KMJ.

About Rev. Azigiza Jnr

Azigiza Jnr started his showbiz career as a dancer but later took part in the Embassy Double-Do dancing contest in 1989 but unfortunately, he did not win. Disappointed, he decided to give up dancing but was advised by ace arts doyen Kwasi Kyei Darkwa (KKD), to try other showbiz avenues.

So he got into disc jockeying and, in no time, he won his mettle in the DJ realm, especially in 1991 when he won the Best West African DJ at a contest held in Togo. He won another in 1993, when he emerged the Best African DJ.

Azigiza Jnr. was resident DJ of most off the big nightclubs in Accra, like Miracle Mirage, the Golden Egg and Glenns. He also hosted Joy FM’s Joy Beach Jam, Guinness Music for Your Dancing Feet, on GTV, Video Vibes and the Azigiza Show.

According to him, all along he had been reflecting on what to do with his life. It was around that period that he came out with his first album, ‘Me Do Wo Abena,’ in 1994, which had to the top hit, ‘Kponkpa.’ In 1995, he released ‘Two degrees Kponkpa’ and followed it with another hit ‘Wo Ye Bea,’ in 1996, which he featured Tic Tac.

In 1998, he became a born-again Christian and that is when his transformation started. He enrolled in some Bible schools and has since been a minister of the gospel.

Ghana DJ Awards 2017

Ghana DJ Awards which is in its fifth year is organised by Merqury Republik, with the aim of reward disc jockeys that have excelled in their work in the year under review.

According to the organisers, this year some selected international DJs would be performing live in Ghana at the award ceremony.

These international DJs will battle it out with Ghanaian DJs such as DJ Mono, DJ Vyrusky, DJ Mic Smith, DJ Collins, Andy Dosty and DJ Black.

In addition to promoting unity among Ghanaian DJs, the event will also create an opportunity for music fans to interact with all the artistes, DJs and other celebrities who will be present at the award.

Dancehall artiste, Charles Nii Armah Mensah, aka Shattawale has described bloggers and other people mocking his wife’s ‘container’ pub as “foolish.”

In a Facebook post on 2nd April, 2017, he wrote: “When I started they said my beats will take me nowhere but I never listened to them.Today the same beats has bought me a mansion, 2 other mansion (building in progress) ..Just yesterday my wife told me she wanted to start a small business which i am supporting her and all Lazy people. can say is its a container lol .#Ayoo We like it and please dont stop criticizing cuz that will make us build the biggest club in Ghana right under your fucken nose..Thank you for reading !! Foolish bloggers !!!”

In a different post written two hours later, he further stated: “I have a barbering shop too in Dansoman, that one too is a container. Please my critics can you help promote that one too… I need it ..Diamond’s Pub is where ade now Edeh pain dem ooo.”

This happened after Ara B, the Dancehall Prince, who is currently at loggerheads with the Shatta family had posted a photo of Shatta Michy’s new pub on his Facebook wall, describing it as ‘container’ pub.

Shatta Wale’s wife Michy opened the new pub known as ‘Diamond Pub & Grill’ in the East Legon environs on 31st March, 2017.

However, considering Shattawale’s big brand in the music industry and social status, it comes as surprise to some people why his wife would operate a pub from a container.

Comedy is an intellectual activity yet most people conceive of comedians as scatterbrains and wastrels.

By virtue of this, there have been a lot of brutish words used to describe comedians. Although the comedians do not see anything wrong with these negative tags, it purely mirrors how people view their job.

However, Ghana has some fine comedy talents that are well – educated. One of them is Amponsah Obarima Akuoku, an Optometrist known in showbiz circles as OB.

According to comedian OB, his educational background and profession distinguish him from his colleagues.

“Who would go to school for 6 years, intern for a year, write a professional exam, pass out as a doctor and come on stage to crack jokes? That factor makes audience more attentive to my stuff. Like ‘Really? A doctor? Doing comedy? Wow. Let’s see what you got’… That seems to be my X Factor… Apart from my dimple,” he told citifmonline.com in an interview.

OB started comedy professionally in 2015 at the University of Cape Coast campus when he was in his final year, Level 600. He actually got motivated by a friend called Margaret Owusu to commercialise his act. The friend had realised OB could entertain people quite well. Through her help and that of other friends, they established a group called TwiCom Productions and they started putting up their own shows.

The doctor cum comedian believes that being a comedian has given him the opportunity to make people happy and to draw public focus to salient issues by addressing them on a lighter note.

That notwithstanding he is of the conviction that comedy goes beyond just telling jokes.

“A comedian needs to be smart, exceptionally observant, articulate, venturesome and timeless,” he said.

He further stated that he is optimistic about the future of Ghanaian comedy. He projected that in 5 years, Ghanaian comedians should be able to host sold out shows at the national auditorium, sold out tours around the 10 regions, internationally recognised in Africa and the Diaspora.

Asked who his favourite comedians were, he said he was torn between Foster Romanus and Augustin Dennis.

OB has performed at high profile shows like KSM’s Afia Siriboe, Night of 1021, 1022, 1023, Lord Of the Ribs 2016, RTP Awards 2016 and Akwaaba UK Night with Eddie Kadi.

He has also appeared on platforms such as Coca-Cola Launch 2016, Laughline, Comedy Bar, Laugh at First Sight, Comedy Fiesta, Comedy Express, among others.

The fast rising comedian is thankful to Sammy Flex, Mic Yamoah, Nii Ashley, Richard Amofa, Nabil Alhassan, George Quaye, Team OB, Ghanaian bloggers and everybody that has in one way or the other contributed to the success of his comedy career.

Just a few hours after former Dobble member, Ennwai had told Citi Showbiz that the group composed Christy purposely for last year’s Kwahu Easter festivities, Paa Kwasi, the other member of the dissolved group, has come out with a differing statement.

Paa Kwasi, in an exclusive interview with Citi Showbiz, has explained that the group did not have Kwahu Easter in mind while they were doing the composition.

“We just did a song that has been accepted and is being enjoyed by music lovers. We did not think about Easter when we were doing Christy. I remember we did this song around this same Easter period but our target was not Easter,” he said.

Already, a lot of people have used Christy as the official song for adverts aimed at promoting their Kwahu Easter events. However, Paa Kwasi has indicated that no one has approached him to use the song.

“No one has contacted me, but I have heard of adverts like that. You see, we live in an industry that lacks the structures so one finds it difficult to take action when it comes to issues like this. But I am happy the song is doing well. I will be at Kwahu to perform it,” he said.

Kwahu Easter is an annual Easter celebration that takes place at Kwahu in the Eastern Region of Ghana. It has become one of the biggest festivals in Ghana, which draws people from far and near.

Over the years, revelers, and event organisers have cashed in on the event, with musicians who have hit songs, benefiting from the shows that they are billed for. With Easter just around the corner, will both Paa Kwasi and Ennwai take advantage of Christy and its fame, during this ‘cocoa season’?

Paa Kwasi has released Abɛ, Bribibi and You Sweet, among other songs, while Ennwai is also promoting his Krom Aye De and Halle Halle tracks.

The Black Star International Film Festival, Ghana’s first ever film festival of international scale, is scheduled to take off later in 2017.

The organisers of the festival have therefore asked for filmmakers to submit their works for the various categories of the viewings and awards in the festival.

The films that will be submitted should have been completed after January 1, 2016. These are then supposed to be submitted to the panel of judges, via Filmfreeway or Festhome.

The 2016 edition of the BSIFF was held in June 2016. It is a Film and Creative Arts advocacy platform that seeks to bridge the gap between the local and international film industry.

The aim of the film festival is to help to project Ghana’s film industry onto the world stage.

Though not many Ghanaian filmmakers submitted their works in last year’s festival, it is hoped that the second edition will have more Ghanaian films and documentaries being featured and, in essence, showcased to the world.
