The management of Archbishop Porter Girls Senior High School, has debunked reports that some of its students had been involved in a fatal accident on their way to the school from the Christmas break.

Rumours widely circulated on social media on Monday, suggesting the students died when a vehicle they were aboard collided with another vehicle at Gomoa Adam junction in the Central Region.

But the Assistant Headmistress, in charge of Administration of the school, Charlotte Asiedu Musa, who spoke to Citi News off record, said although there was an accident on that stretch on Monday, none of its students were involved.

She therefore called on parents and guardians of students of the school to remain calm as their wards were safe.

In a related development, twenty-four persons escaped death, but sustained various degrees of injuries after a Sprinter Bus they were travelling in, collided with a Toyota V8 car near the Gomoa Adam Junction in the Central Region.

The Central Regional Manager of the National Road Safety Commission, Stephen Anokye in an interview with Citi News, said, the Sprinter Bus was headed for Bogoso in the Western Region when the crash happened.

“At about 1.30pm yesterday [Monday], the Sprinter Benz bus from Accra to Bogoso upon reaching a section of the road near Gomoa Adam junction, collided with a Toyota V8 which was headed for Accra. The Toyota V8 was trying to avoid a lunatic who was walking on his side of the road and in an attempt to do that, he hit the side of the Benz bus and it [bus] veered off the road into the bush, landing on the side of the driver.”

“All occupants of the bus sustained serious injuries and they have since been rushed to the Apam Catholic Hospital for treatment.”

Stephen Anokye noted that, the driver of the Toyota vehicle was also receiving treatment after suffering some injuries from the accident.

The Police have since launched an investigation into the matter.

The Zero Tolerance for Teacher Absenteeism policy adopted by the Ministry of Education to enhance accountability, and increase teacher presence as well as time on desk in schools has yielded positive results.

After three years of its implementation, the rate of teacher absenteeism has declined from 27 per cent in 2012 to seven per cent in 2016.

Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, Minister of Education, who announced this in Accra said, the Ministry would continue to champion the course until the rate of teacher absenteeism is brought to zero.

She said after she and her team had initiated surprise visits to countless schools throughout the country, the National Inspectorate Board (NIB) and the Ghana Education Service (GES) were resourced to intensify both external and internal monitoring in basic schools, among many other functions.

She, therefore, commended various stakeholders including teachers, the teacher unions, traditional authorities, district education officers, and the parents who supported the Ministry to achieve the result.

“I wish to thank everyone for their cooperation which has helped improve the image of our cherished profession,” she added.

On In-Service Education and Training Programme, the Minister said, in the four-year period, a total of 12,085 Mathematics and 2,387 Science teachers across the country were trained.

Prof Opoku-Agyemang said in addition, 5,626 non-core subject teachers and 5,923 Heads from Public Basic Schools in the 75 deprived districts and low-performing schools (public and private) also received training.

“In our effort to accelerate ICT education at the basic education level, 81,000 basic school teachers have been trained since 2013 to enable them acquire the requisite skills in the use of ICT to facilitate teaching and learning.

“A total number of 54,500 Laptops were procured and distributed to basic school teachers, and 60,000 laptop computers were distributed to public basic schools across the country,” she said.

The Minister said in order to strengthen governance of educational institutions to improve efficiency of education service delivery, the Ministry had over the past two years embarked on a process to review the legal and regulatory framework of some of its agencies.

To date, three bills, namely, Technical University Act, 2016 (Act 992); University of Environment and Sustainable Development Act, 2015 (Act 898), and Chartered Institute of Taxation Act, 2016 (Act 916) have been passed into Acts of parliament and accented by the President.

Prof Opoku-Agyemang announced that Tertiary Education Research Fund Bill had also been approved by Cabinet and is currently before Parliament for Consideration while Ghana Book Development Council Bill was currently at the Attorney General’s Department.

Accra Academy Senior High School emerged winners of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) market quiz competition for Senior High Schools.

Legon Presbyterian Senior High School came second, St Thomas Aquinas was third and Ngleshi Amanfro Senior High School taking the fourth position.

Students from the winning school would have GH¢1000 each deposited into an investment account opened for them by SEC.

The second edition of the bi-annual competition for secondary school students, is an initiative aimed at imparting knowledge and understanding of the capital market into young Ghanaians – an approach to ensure that the culture of saving and investing in the Capital Market takes root in young people.

This year’s quiz competition explored the theme: “Unleashing the Potential of the Capital Market in Ghana.”

Dr Aidoo Antwi, the Director General SEC said the initiative formed part of the Commission’s commitment to imbibe financial literacy into the young generation.

He said as part of the investor protection activity there was the need to educate investors to somehow protect themselves to promote the development of the capital market.

“This would help capture the youth at a young age because it is difficult teaching the elderly on financial literacy than the younger ones,” he said.

The competition tested the students on questions related to financial securities to enable them manage their finances well.

Dr Antwi said the initiative was adopted by the SEC last two years as part of their educational programmes and intended to expand it to the benefit of the 10 regions.

“If we get the resources in the next two years, we will plan and make it nationwide so that everybody will be part of the process of getting you educated in financial,” he added.

The final quiz competition was participated in by four schools; Presbyterian Boys Senior High School, Legon, Accra Academy Senior High School, Saint Thomas Aquinas Senior High School and Ngleshi Amanfro Senior High School.

Dr Antwi hinted that SEC would be touring various countries as part of the prizes for future Capital Market Quiz Competition.

He said participants from the 32 schools who started the competition in the six centres would also have an investment account opened in their name.
