Government has criticized the Italian Football Association for failing to punish some football fans who racially abused Ghanaian international, Sulley Muntari, during a Serie A game earlier this week.

The former Black Stars player walked off the pitch in the dying minutes of the game in protest against the racial abuse he suffered from some fans.

[contextly_sidebar id=”rZGQuirdEidw9DXgRWbVMCKmBydnrH7J”]His complaint to the referee about the abuse only got him a booking in the game between his Pescara side and Cagliari.

The incident has attracted global attention, with bodies such as the UN, FIFPRO and some important football personalities supporting Muntari for the action.

muntari-walk-off

Ghana’s Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, Pius Hadzidze in an interview with Citi News condemned the attack on the footballer.

“Racism of any kind is an action that must be condemned by all. We as the Ministry of Youth and Sports unequivocally condemn the racist attack that was targeted at Sulley Muntari. We condemn it in no uncertain terms and we are calling on football governing bodies across the world and particularly the football governing body of Italy to investigate the circumstances under which he [Muntari] rather became the one who was punished and the fans of the team that were shouting the racists slurs and insults at Muntari rather have been left off the hook.”

The Italian FA in a rather shocking decision sanctioned Muntari by barring him from featuring in a game for the walk-off.

According to a disciplinary committee that investigated the matter, official match reports stated that, only 10 football fans out of the 2,000 spectators chanted the racist slurs.

But the Deputy Minister said, “they must take firm unbiased and fair steps to ensure that such actions do not repeat themselves. We stand in solidarity with all the people who have condemned this clear act of racism against Sulley Muntari.”

Mahama backs Muntari’s protest after racial abuse

Ghana’s Former President John Dramani Mahama, has also backed Sulley Muntari’s walk-off after he was racially abused by fans during Pescara’s Serie A match with Cagliari on Sunday.

Mr. Mahama in a tweet said he stood with Muntari.

Ghana will be getting a yearly cash injection of USD 100,000 from the Confederation of African Football under the Presidency of Ahmad Ahmad.

The Malagasy made this known earlier this week when he met staff of the CAF Secretariat in Cairo on his first working day in charge of football on the continent.

Ahmad said that he would ensure that federations got more financial support in his tenure but they would have to be accountable and transparent.

The amount of the USD 100,000 is expected to help football federations in their functions to ensure that football is developed all around Africa.

He said, “To me, consolidating the administration is the first concern. Starting this year, we will put in measures which will ensure good governance and then, we will move on to the issues of financial transparency and the redistribution of resources.

Starting this year, CAF will allocate USD 100, 000 to each federation per year. We think that the federations deserve to be benefit from this financial resource because CAF supports itself thanks to it sponsors.”

In 2016, CAF has signed lucrative deals with French oil company, Total, and French telecommunications entity, Orange in relation to the African Nations Cup tournament.

Former Black Stars midfielder, Kevin Prince Boateng, is hopeful that the Ghana will make some major changes in its football management after the team’s poor performance at the 2017 African Cup of Nations tournament in Gabon.

He expressed disappointment at the country’s performance in the tournament in spite of its great value, and said he was expectant the country will make “the big changes we all hope for” because the country “deserve better”

Following the Black Stars’ 1-0 loss to their Burkina Faso counterparts in the AFCON 3rd place match on Saturday [February 4, 2017], the UD Las Palmas player who has been on an indefinite suspension from the team since 2015 for insulting former coach, Kwesi Appiah, said, it was “unbelievable how a team, coach, fans and country with such great value can finish an Afcon in that way!. I hope now we will see all those big changes we all hope for!! Because Ghana and all the people of Ghana deserve better.”

Some Ghanaian fans are already calling for the head of the coach, Avram Grant, who has been accused of taking bad decisions on his selection of players and lack of tact.

Others have also blamed the President of the local Football Association Kwesi Nyantakyi for the team’s recent difficulty citing poor management on his part.

The Black Stars failed to beat Cameroon in the 2017 tournament to get a chance against 7-time trophy winners Egypt in the final.

They also lost by a lone goal to Burkina Faso to land in 4th position of the 16-team tournament.

The view of Kevin Prince Boateng has also been articulated by some sport pundits who are arguing for a radical change in the leadership of the team as well as the Football Association to break the Black Stars’ 35-year AFCON trophy drought.

The Black Stars will be returning home next week after the tournament and will receive $1.5 million from the continental football body, CAF for placing 4th.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA), has fined goalkeeper, Razak Brimah, for insulting Ghanaians who have criticized his performance at the ongoing AFCON 2017 in Gabon.

The shot stopper in a video he posted on Facebook, vented his anger in unprintable words many considered extremely disrespectful.

Brimah however deleted the post few minutes later, and apologized to Ghanaians admitting his words were “unacceptable and offensive” and did not represent his true values.

The 29-year-old who plays for Spanish club Córdoba CF, earlier on Monday [January 30] posted a video of himself on Facebook where he said “They (Ghanaians) talk too much, they should “f**k” go to hell. I am not hash but am “f**k” tired of this negative people, instead of supporting the team (Black Stars) to move forward and pray for the team, they sit out there and talk “sh*t.”

In spite of his apology, many Ghanaians believe the country’s FA must show him the exit as a disciplinary measure.

However the FA in a meeting on Tuesday [January 31] to examine the comments, fined the goalkeeper $2,500.

The FA said it had received a written apology from Brimah, but fined him in accordance with Article 6(1)& (2) of the Black Stars Code of Conduct.

The FA also apologized to the public for the player’s action, and called for more support for the team, as they continue their journey to annex the 2017 African Cup of Nations trophy in Gabon.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) held a meeting on Tuesday morning, to examine comments made by goalkeeper Razak Brimah on social media.

The meeting was necessitated by the unfortunate words used by Brimah which management finds unacceptable.

We have also received a written apology from Brimah over the comments which we have considered in reaching a decision.

Management determined that Brimah’s comments on social media were in violation of Article 6(1)& (2) of the Black Stars Code of Conduct which provides as follows:

1) During the periods of camping all members of the Delegation, particularly players are forbidden to engage in any discussions, and/or any form of communication with player agents, scouts, journalists and all other unauthorized personnel except with the express permission of the Head Coach or Leader of Delegation.

2) Any player who violates Clause 1 of this article shall be subject to a fine of not less than $1,000.00 In pursuance thereof, the GFA has decided to impose a fine of $2,500 on Brimah which will be donated to a charity in Ghana.

We render an unqualified apology to the general public.

We will continue to count on the unflinching support of Ghanaians to help us win the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations.
