The Golden Tulip Accra Hotel has hosted the Ghana Rugby National sevens team, the Ghana Eagles, to a buffet lunch shortly before the team departed Tuesday for Kampala, Uganda, to participate in the Africa Rugby men’s sevens two-day tournament.

This is part of the qualification for the sevens rugby world cup 2018, the commonwealth games, and the World Series Repechage tournament in Hong Kong.

As the only unranked team to qualify for the tournament in Kampala, the Ghana Eagles are poised to prove themselves on the Africa Rugby stage with giants like Uganda, Namibia, Madagascar, Zimbabwe, Tunisia, Morocco, Senegal and Botswana participating in the tournament to take place in Kampala, Uganda between 6-7 October 2017.

The Ghana Eagles qualification came on the back of Ghana rugby’s qualification as a full member of world rugby in a record time of fewer than three years, under the leadership of Herbert Mensah as President.

The Golden Tulip Hotel has consistently supported the Ghana Rugby football team in diverse ways as a lesser known sport in Ghana.

The National sevens team took the opportunity to visit the hotel prior to their departure to show appreciation to one of Ghana’s best hotels for their continuous support and world-class hospitality.

In an exciting and serene atmosphere, the national rugby team, led by President of Ghana Rugby football union, Mr. Herbert Mensah, did a photo shoot with managers of the hotel whiles players did some on-the -pitch war cry to demonstrate their preparedness for the tournament.

Mr. Herbert Mensah thanked Golden Tulip Accra hotel management for hosting the national rugby team and for their continuous support, and encouraged the Ghana Eagles to make an impact in Kampala and raise the Flag of Ghana high.

He also called on corporate Ghana to join key sponsor, PAN AFRICAN GROUP, KOMATSU in supporting the Ghana Eagles in their quest to take Ghana Rugby to the global stage.

In a related development, the Ghana Eagles also briefly spent time at ESCAPADES CAFE to show appreciation to the management for their support to the team during their preparations towards the Kampala tournament.

The Ghana Eagles are expected back in Accra on Sunday October 8 2017.

Portions of the Kumasi Central Market have been destroyed in a fire suspected to have started  around 8:30pm on  Thursday evening.

The blaze has destroyed shops and property worth thousands of Cedis.

Eyewitnesses say the part of the market known as the 18-yard area  through to the second-hand clothes section were the worst hit

Reports indicate that personnel from the Regional Fire Service were at the scene working to put the fire out.

Bridget, a trader who spoke to Citi News, said only a handful of policemen and two fire trucks were on site.

“We heard about the fire around 9pm and rushed to the scene. The whole 18-yard area is gone. There are two fire service trucks and I saw only one policeman and a lot of people around.

“the 18-yard and other areas were on fire. It started right at the entrance of the market.”

According to Bridget, traders at the scene attempting to save their wares.

Market fires are common in Ghana. A number of big markets across the country, including the Kumasi Central Market have been gutted by fire multiple times.

In 2013, government brought in experts from America to assess the cause of these fires but the report is yet to be made public.

However, local fire service personnel say the fires can be blamed on illegal electrical connections, cooking in the markets and burning of rubbish.

The Ghana National Fire service in Takoradi says  the increase in illegal electrical connections in the Takoradi Market is posing an imminent fire outbreak in the largest market in the Western Region.

According to them over 50 percent of electrical wiring at the market is considered illegal.

The Station Officer at the market, Albert Ansah noticed the problem earlier and accordingly wrote proposals to the appropriate quarters.

The proposals haven’t received any attention.

He said the  recent decongestion exercise carried out by the Sekondi Takoradi Metro Assembly  revealed the flaws in the electrical system.

He said despite distress calls particularly to the Electricity Company of Ghana, authorities have failed to respond to their calls.

“Deputy Regional Minister Alfred Ekow Gyan was here last year, metro chief also came here on inspection at another time, the ECG on their part does not respond at all to our calls when we spot danger”. Albert Ansah said.

Adding to the calls, the Western Regional Fire Safety Inspector of the Ghana National Fire Service, Divisional Officer Grade 2, Roberta Aggrey Ghanson in an interview with Citi News said the growing number of occupants at the market ‘which was not anticipated is a recipe for outbreak.”

She said the ECG does not inspect the market on regular basis.

She therefore called on the company to respond to the demands of the service.
