The oral examination of businessman Alfred Agbesi Woyome, has been postponed due to the unavailability of the judge, Justice Ampah Benin.

Mr. Woyome was expected to be orally examined today, Monday, October 2, by a Deputy Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame over his GH¢51 debt to the state.

[contextly_sidebar id=”a9b3QL6c0DDdN6V46gWGwUco2QsHZKtf”]But the court has since set October 10 as the new date for the oral examination.

A Deputy Attorney-General, Godfred Dame, in July began an inquiry into sources of income and assets of the businessman in order to recover the monies due to the state.

The last hearing of the case at the Supreme Court witnessed an almost two-hour grilling of Mr. Woyome by the deputy Attorney-General.

Mr. Woyome had prayed the Supreme Court to stay proceedings on the oral examination since he had filed for a review of the case.

But the Supreme Court dismissed the application for stay of proceedings by Businessman Alfred Woyome, seeking to halt the oral examination.

According to the court, presided over by a single Judge, Justice Alfred Benin, the application had no basis.

Earlier this month, the government began a valuation of Woyome’s properties in a quest to retrieve the GHs51m wrongfully paid to him.

Some security personnel and officials from the Ghana Valuation Board, were sent to the Trasacco residence of Mr. Woyome to conduct the valuation to build a concrete evidence on his ability to pay the debt for his trial.

Background to saga

Mr. Woyome was paid the GHc 51 million after claiming he helped Ghana raise funds to construct stadia for the hosting of the 2008 African Cup of Nations.

However, an Auditor General’s report released in 2010, held that the amount was paid illegally to him.

Subsequently, the Supreme Court in 2014 ordered Mr. Woyome to pay back the money, after a former Attorney General, Martin Amidu, challenged the legality of the payments.

Following delays in retrieving the money, Supreme Court judges unanimously granted the Attorney-General clearance to execute the court’s judgment, ordering Mr. Woyome to refund the cash to the state.

There had been previous attempts to orally examine Mr. Woyome with Mr. Amidu himself, in 2016, filed an application at the Supreme Court seeking to examine Alfred Woyome, on how he was going to pay back the money, after the Attorney General’s office under the Mahama Administration, led by the former Minister for Justice, Marietta Brew Appiah-Oppong, discontinued a similar application.

In February 2017 however, Mr. Amdu withdrew his suit seeking an oral examination, explaining that the change of government and the assurance by the new Attorney General to retrieve all judgement debts wrongfully paid to individuals, had given him renewed confidence in the system.

Joshua Clottey has finally got the title he won in Australia a month after he beat Anthony Mundine.

The ‘Grand Master’ returned to Ghana after his April 9 victory from his latest conquest, but without the prize he worked for.

On Friday morning, the new World Boxing Association (WBA) International light-middleweight title confirmed on Facebook that the boxing body had finally sent him the belt.

In front of his home fans, Anthony Mundine was brutally floored five times by the man from Accra.

For a sport that has the tradition of presenting titles to winners in the ring just after their triumph, the absence of the WBA International belt on the night when Clottey won was strange.

“I raised questions but it seemed to me that they did not expect me to win the title,” Clottey explained to the Daily Graphic when he touched down days after the win.

“I called my manager in the United States over the matter and he spoke to them about it. It was to be delivered within days, but now almost two weeks after the fight, I’m yet to receive the belt,” he said at the time.

Citi Sports understands that Clottey automatically becomes the number one contender to Mayweather Jr’s light-middleweight crown, having won the WBA International title.

Clottey, 36, has a good career record of 38 wins, including 22 knockouts and four losses.

He looks determined in the photo, doesn’t he?

On Tuesday, 24 hours before he beat Anthony Mundine, Clottey summed up why he had been so focused for the bout.

“I can’t talk for him,’’ he said. ‘‘After the fight he can choose. It is my time to shine in Australia. This fight is very important for both of our careers. A loss and you have to push again. A win will take you to the right spot.”

“I am expecting his best. I really wanted to fight this fight to let them know I am still there.”

And he did.

Why was the fight so important?

The Ghanaian has had two fights in the past three years — both wins — and needed a fight that could propel him back into the stratosphere of Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto, who he fought in 2010 and 2009.

It’s understood Andrade was the carrot dangled at the end of a Clottey bout, so Mundine bit.

Joshua Clottey, whose nicknames also include “The Grandmaster”, went down under (Australia) and fought like a man on a mission against the hometown hero.

Long before the final ding dong belled Mundine after 12 rounds, everyone knew Clottey was the new WBA International Junior Middleweight champion.

From the onset, Clottey smothered Mundine, who goes by the name “The Man.”

The man from Accra attacked relentlessly and soon floored his foe in the 3rd round – the first of five knockdowns.  The battery went on with Clottey scoring two more knockdowns in the 6th, and one in each the 8th round and 10th round.

Next up for Joshua?

This was the most significant win for Clottey since his World Championship victory over Zab Judah in 2008, for the IBF Welterweight crown.

“I am thrilled that Joshua was victorious today,” said Star Boxing CEO and Founder Joe DeGuardia, who handles Clottey’s promotions.

“I knew when I signed Joshua to a promotional agreement he would still be a major force in the Jr. Middleweight division.  Joshua has the ability to defeat any junior middleweight in the world and this win sets up potentially major fights for Joshua with the likes of Canelo Alvarez, Erislandy Lara, and my Jr. Middleweight champion, Demetrius Andrade.

“I am looking forward to Joshua’s journey back to the World Championship.”

So there you go, those are the prime targets for the Accra man.

But the one Clottey really wants among the lot is ten years his junior – Demetrius Andrade. An undefeated 26-year-old American, Andrade  (20-0, 13KO) is one of the top contenders for Mayweather’s welterweight crown.

He is the one both Mundine and Clottey wanted after Wednesday’s bout. This is he.

dimi

As is the case in boxing, often when there seems to be a clear way, a small fact muddles the waters.

In this case, Clottey is promoted by Joe DeGuardia, the same man who looks after Andrade. This means that DeGuardia will have to raise a double purse if he pits both his fighters against each other. It’s not something any promoter likes to do.

What is clear is that Clottey and DeGuardia are going to bring good things to Star Boxing.

A victory against Clottey would have been impressive for Mundine, but a fight against Andrade would have put Mundine on Mayweather’s radar, particularly as both are desperate to fight the richest man in sport.

In short, Clottey is now closer to Mayweather than before he was on Wednesday.

Andrade recently declared he would “take over boxing after Mayweather retires”, and defends his WBO light middleweight belt in June against Brian Rose.

Now that Clottey looks very attractive, should Andrade prevail in two months’ time, a showdown is likely and would put the winner into the upper echelons of matchmaking discussion.

For boxing promoters, Clottey is labelled as one who dines with world champions. After all, his only career losses (four) have been against some of the best fighters of the past decade – Zab Judah, Margarito, Cotto and Pacquiao.

But because of managerial and promoter issues, he has only fought twice since he went the distance with Pacquiao in 2010.

Things are looking decidedly good for the man who used to be mocked for eating banku and okro soup, alongside kanwe.

ANALYSIS: WHO SHOULD CLOTTEY FIGHT NEXT?

Clottey outclassed the former rugby league star in a unanimous points decision – 116-108, 115-109, 117-108.
It was Mundine’s sixth loss in 52 fights and first in Newcastle in four bouts.

Mundine was floored in the third, twice in the sixth then again in the eighth and 10th, each time with Clottey’s left hand providing the telling blow.

Mundine’s camp considered throwing in the towel at the end of the 10th but he fought on to finish the 12-round contest.

After the fight, Clottey, whose record is now 38-4 (22 KOs), said Mundine made a mistake dropping to the super-welterweight division, where the Australian held the WBA international title until last night.

Mundine said he had no regrets.

‘‘I want to fight the best but I got caught early,’’ he said.

‘‘I finished the fight on my feet and at the end of the day you’ve got to have a go and fight the best.’’

The 38-year-old said he was not thinking about retirement and that he may look at a rematch with Australian arch-rivals Danny Green or Daniel Geale.

Mundine was stunned early in the third by a left hook then was floored towards the end of the round when he walked into a straight right.

Clottey kept the heat on Mundine in the fourth but the Australian got busy in the fifth to get back in the fight.

But Clottey soon regained his dominance in the sixth, rocking Mundine with another crisp left which sent him to the canvas. He regained his feet but was down again within seconds.

Mundine tried to counter-attack in the seventh but was on the back foot again by the end of the round.

He was felled midway through the eight, Clottey again catching him with a sharp left. He recovered and finished the round strongly.

The Newcastle crowd lifted in the 10th as Mundine landed some encouraging flurries but Clottey never appeared in real danger and sent the three-time world champion to the canvas for a fifth time with another left.

Clottey played it smart in the 12th and final round, avoiding any danger.

Ghana’s Joshua Clottey is the new WBA international light middleweight champion of the world.

He beat Australia’s Anthony Mundine on Wednesday night (local time). The judges called it 116-108, 115-109, 117-108 in the Ghanaian’s favour.

Mundine’s future is in the balance after losing in a twelve-round points decision to Clottey on Wednesday night for the WBA international light middleweight title.

Mundine was desperate to gain the international recognition he needs and gets him closer to his dream of facing Floyd Mayweather, however the unanimous points decision loss has closed the chance of that happening.
