A glimmer of hope

A tournament that nobody cared about had once again presented the opportunity for a nation to put in place the necessary structures to ensure that the scenes of joy could be replicated down the years.

There was doubt and uncertainty, pessimism and indifference but nothing soothes the thirst of a Ghanaian better than a comfortable victory over Nigeria in a game of football.

champs

A 4-1 win was great and the likes of Stephen Sarfo,Vincent Atingah and Patrick Razak should see their stock rise after this competition, courtesy of the number and quality of lenses provided to make this showpiece as global as possible.

It made a difference to have a central tournament website that made the accessibility of information less of an adventure.Team sheets were provided via social media along with other necessary updates.

My conversations reveal that the accreditation and media procedures such as post match pressers were also fairly professionally handled, saving all involved the stress.

crawler

This was all made possible by the media sponsors of the competition Fox Sports Africa.

The individuals that hatched the idea that birthed this deal have provided a blue print that can be modeled.

Cape-Coast proved that all corners of Ghana are almost equally receptive to the game of football, the quality of the game itself was appreciable but most of all the WAFU tournament has been reborn from the ashes.

The Spanish Assassin

On a regular day dressed in a regular person’s clothes he could pass for a stockbroker or perhaps an attorney, but Alvaro Morata has quickly made the turfs of the Premier League his natural habitat.

A stark opposite in style and approach to the game from Diego Costa whose boots he has the task of filling.

Whatever Chelsea’s ambitions are, they are firmly hitched to the consistent ability of Morata to find the back of the net.

alv

Costa’s goals led to Championships even though he chose to play the devil half the time.

Slate the man all you want but he knew how to get the job done especially in critical games.

Morata however, has swooped on the league almost in angelic style with his gracious glide across the pitch and his assured finishing.

Often accused of lacking the killer instinct and character to be the lead striker for a team his opening six matches will have dispelled any doubt.

mor

For Premier League defenders it has quickly become a case of pick your poison as far as the Spaniard is concerned,as Stoke City would find out.

He makes the art of running the channels a joy to behold and the finesse was on full display for his first,he put the nitros on to leave his marker in the dust and capped it off with the most sublime of finishes for his second.

Positioning and hunger brought the hat-trick and again let it sink in that it only took six premier league matches.

At this rate putting a limit to the number of goals he is capable of scoring in his first season will be foolhardy because he could open the flood gates a little wider than any of us could project.

In the event that he hits a prolonged barren patch, the class that he has displayed in the early phase of his journey should be enough to put the minds of all at ease.

Yes,he has been that spectacular and he is only getting started.

Carmelo Anthony:Phase Three

The Denver Nugget days solidified him as a great scorer, the New York Knicks journey revealed his stubborn side and the different legs of his game as a ball player but Oklahoma City promises the unimaginable.

It is prudent that the savvy role of Sam Presti, general manager of the OKC Thunder is properly acknowledged when Carmelo Anthony’s trade is spoken of.

My jaw literally dropped to be quickly replaced by a smirk that had me thinking,”wow I love the NBA”.

I cannot better describe my reaction to when I first saw the tweet from ace ESPN journalist Adrian Wojnarowski.

One of the greatest small forwards to ever play the game was for the first time going to be afforded a real chance to win a ring after a career that had already boasted a scoring title and ten all star representations.

Questions of how he fits into the Thunder line up immediately emerged, along with the debate on who takes crunch time shots now that the Thunder have three all star players.

It is practical to think that Billy Donovan will keep Paul George in his natural wing spot and move Anthony to the four spot where his speed and skill mean that he will be a handful for most power forwards he will face on a nightly basis.

He will benefit from the double teams that his other two superstar team mates will attract, leaving him space to take high percentage looks.

melo

The firepower that the Thunder now posses will mean that fewer games will go down to the wire reducing the occurrence of the crunch time shot.

We are yet to see the Thunder on the hardwood but the addition of Anthony gives them the look of a team that is ready to battle the Golden State Warriors for the Western Conference Crown if they can create the synergy to play together as a group.

The San Antonio Spurs and the Houston Rockets will beg to differ but Melo is as lethal a scorer as any other in the association and his new home in OKC presents him with a chance to dust off the ridicule he has had to endure in recent times.

Finally he has a chance to solidify his legacy.

Citi Sports’ Benjamin Nketsia wonders which way Ghana will go as it searches for a new head coach for the Black Stars to replace Avram Grant.

The Returnee

“I believe that the young guys who played did well and my intention was to bring them on when the US team get tired but these things happen,”- The response of James Kwesi Appiah following a painful 2-1 defeat to the United States in Ghana’s opening game of the Brazil 2014 World Cup.

In the minds of many, this response sealed James Kwesi Appiah’s fate as one that was tactically shallow and lacking in the emotional intelligence required to comprehend situations that required veteran influence.

Like a phoenix, he has been reborn from the ashes and has emerged as the prime candidate for the Black Stars job.

Once again, the top coaching job in Ghana is vacant but the biggest debate in the days preceding the naming of a substantive manager remain if an indigene or an expatriate should be the one running affairs.

The incumbent government through the Ministry of Youth and Sports have made their intentions known that a Ghanaian should be calling the shots of Ghana’s senior male football team.

Voices more powerful than the average from the corridors of power are almost at the point of getting their way: the return of Kwesi Appiah as head coach of the Black Stars.

These powerful voices and hands trust that Appiah was treated unfairly in his first tenure and thus must be given the chance to put things right.

The Ghana Football Association on the other hand have demonstrated that they have no faith in the current crop of Ghanaian coaches available on the scene.

However, the same crop of Ghanaian coaches available on the local scene have been deemed fit to handle all the age-restricted national teams and indeed the assistant manager slot of the Black Stars.

The Process

According to reports as many as 60 trainers from across all corners of the globe submitted applications for the job with a number of high-profile names such as Harry Redknapp, Roberto Carlos and Herve Renard all linked to the job.

None of these names has officially been substantiated by any outlet of the GFA and thus remain nothing but speculation.

Is it not curious then that someway, somehow, the man that was fired by the GFA has been touted as the favourite to land the job when he cannot apply for the position due to his current obligations with Al Khartoum?

Word of a three-man committee set up to appoint a technical director to aid him after the world cup barely surfaced before the rug was yanked from under his feet by the same people that had handed him a two-year extension after the World Cup in Brazil.

A lacklustre 1-1 draw against Uganda in the Afcon qualifier sealed his fate even before his farewell match: a 3-2 win against Togo in Lome.

In the 27 matches he supervised, he managed twelve wins, ten defeats and five draws in all competitions.

Displaying a lack of decisiveness in decision-making, failing to command respect and tactical tautness leave one questioning if the motive for hiring a coach to lead Ghana is merely an opportunity to hand a Ghanaian a job, or a serious attempt to hire regardless of skin colour and nationality a man with a winning track record to reconstruct the Black Stars in its fractured state.

What is evident is that again he is not the master of his own destiny and is caught between a government that want him for reasons that might not be purely football-based and a GFA that might be forced to hire him against their will with the hope that he might fail in the process.

Forgetting the painful experience

A lofty reputation preceding his arrival, Avram Grant, departed Ghana with many glad to see the back of him.

All through his tenure he was frequently accused of an indifferent attitude towards the job as a well as a lack of commitment to teaching the game and passing on his knowledge.

It almost feels like the quest to get Ghana to again become the most dominant force in African football while carving out a unique philosophy of the game has taken a few steps back.

avg

Is the Ghana FA captivated by big time coaching certificates and an impressive resume or in exploring the mindset of the one individual who possesses the rare qualities required to forge a championship winning team?

There have been no formal interactions between the FA and the media as far as the appointment of the head coach goes.

Indeed the GFA’s website has never published or mentioned the coaching situation except putting on record that a six-man committee headed by FA President Kwesi Nyantakyi will soon present the chosen one and that Maxwell Konadu will play an interim role.

The lack of a clear vision and trust in the process has culminated in the reckless hiring and firing of coaches.

There is one school of thought that believes the FA’s hand has been forced into accepting the fact that a local man, most likely Appiah will get the job.

The last three years have presented ample time to evaluate the pros and cons of both the Grant and Appiah era.

While both went through the motions of the job the end result regardless of colour and nationality is that the Black Stars are close to going four decades since the last Afcon.

There must be laid down standards by which Ghanaian football will be measured, and currently there are none.

What values will Ghana’s football and indeed the national team be built upon.

The next man to take that seductive position must bring certain staple qualities to the table and these do not come colour-coated.

1.Independence of mind

Seeking and accepting advice has helped a lot of wise men that have graced this planet but the consciousness to filter what advice must be implemented is a gift very few possess.

Manipulation of managers in the selection of players is a problem at both the national and club level on the continent and Ghana is no exception.

One of the biggest accusations facing indigenous Ghanaian coach’s is the fact that they are usually toothless with regards to player selection and are often influenced by powerful stakeholders in the football fraternity.

This situation is however built on the principle of the individual manager in question and one who has strong values will walk in the face of such challenges.

One who wholly believes in his own knowledge base and in his ability to execute a job for which he has been trained won’t take kindly to being forced to take decisions against his will.

Reports of widespread imposition of players and the frequent side stepping of the coach in crunch decision times were rife during Kwesi Appiah’s first tenure.

In the event that Appiah returns as head coach, his relationship with the GFA will make for interesting analysis.

The Black Stars coaching job is lucrative and from a Ghanaian perspective its hard to fathom one walking away from a job that pays a salary of between USD 20,000 – USD 50,000.

2. A willing teacher

In Avram Grant, the GFA hoped for a man who was willing to impart the knowledge he had gathered in his years spent in the game to coaches in Ghana and in turn to players in the country.

This, however, was not the case and after several promptings by the media he reluctantly supervised a clinic for coaches in the Ghana Premier league.

Players that have made it to the national team level barely need any teaching especially when they are over the age of 27 but subtle guidance and advice go a long way to making a player successful.

3.Respect for merit

Avram Grant’s final squad selection for the 2017 Afcon in Gabon disrespected the word merit in the most blatant way possible when he decided that a combined total of 39 goals between young striker Raphael Dwamena and Ghana Premier League MVP Latif Blessing was not good enough to make a team that eventually travelled with half fit centre forwards.

Whoever takes up the job must present a level platform that gives eligible players an equal opportunity to play for the national team regardless of if they play their football in Ghana or overseas.

3.A clear-cut plan

Athletes always hold in high regard managers that communicate their plans in clear language and outline from the onset the measures that must be taken to ensure that the team reaches its objectives.

Ambiguity provides the fertile ground for player revolt and disrespect and again, such a scenario reared its head in Brazil with regards to Kevin Prince Boateng and his showdown with Appiah over certain training drills and methods used.

Managers must ensure that even in the situation where it appears the agreed plan is not working, communication with the line leaders in the team is clear to enable the vision of the team be better communicated and understood even in the face of adversity.

It is well documented that all of Ghana’s four Afcon trophies have come under local coaches with the legendary C.K Gyamfi lifting it on three occasions while Osam Duodo also contributed one.

The dynamics of the African game has seen changes since Ghana last won the Afcon in 1982 but a peek at the all-time list of coaches who have won the Afcon shows how dominant Ghana was under Gyamfi and Egypt under Shehata, both local coaches.

gy

A pure understanding of the game and the mindfulness to understand and micro manage the personnel that execute the game plan is what is paramount.

Whether that comes in the form of a Ghanaian or an expatriate is not what matters but a plan that eventually leads to success.

The Black Stars have lined up an international friendly against Mexico to be played on June 28 at Houston’s NRG Stadium in Texas, USA.

The Federación Mexicana de Fútbol (FMF), Soccer United Marketing (SUM), Lone Star Sports & Entertainment and the Houston Dynamo today announced that Mexico will play Ghana on Wednesday, June 28 (7:30 p.m. CT), at Houston’s NRG Stadium, presented by AT&T.

The game takes place just days prior to Mexico’s participation in the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup, the official national team competition in the region.

Tickets to the Houston match will go on sale to the general public on Wednesday, March 29 at 10 a.m. local time via Ticketmaster.com or by calling 800-745-3000.

The game is part of the landmark 15th annual Mexican National Team U.S. Tour, which kicked off on Feb. 8 in Las Vegas in a 1-0 win against Iceland in front of a record-breaking audience for soccer in the city.

Mexico will also play in Los Angeles on May 27 versus Croatia, and June 1 in the New York/New Jersey metropolitan area against Ireland.

Mexico has defeated Ghana in two all-time meetings (2006 and 2008). The 2006 game, played at FC Dallas’ Toyota Stadium, saw Guillermo Franco score the game’s only goal with a 75th minute header.

Mexican National Team legend Pável Pardo was the hero of the 2008 game, scoring the winning goal – a penalty – in the 85th minute to give Mexico a 2-1 win, in a match played in England.

Mexico has played at NRG Stadium (formerly named Reliant Stadium) 15 times, resulting in seven wins, six draws, and just two losses.

The Ghana Football Association has rubbished claims that the current technical team of the Black Stars has been dissolved.

Uncertainty over who becomes the successor to Avram Grant has sparked a number of reports in the media surrounding the back room staff.

The head coach’s position is currently occupied by the assistant manager of the team Maxwell Konadu on an interim basis while the six-man search committee goes about its business of trying to get a replacement for the Israeli manager.

Former head coach of the Black Stars during the Brazil 2014 World Cup Kwesi Appiah is being heavily tipped to bag the job.

The FA has called the reports fabrications and an attempt to create mischief.

“The backroom staff of the team is still in place until any orders to the contrary.

“Until then they are still in charge and hold the mandate as the technical team of the stars,” Communications Director of the GFA Ibrahim Saani Daara told Citi Sports.

The FA is expected to begin scrutinising candidates that have submitted their applications for the top job.

President of the Ghana Football Association, Kwesi Nyantakyi, has stated that the 2017 African Nations Cup title is the team’s target after booking a place in the semi-finals of the tournament.

Ghana beat DR Congo 2-1 in the quarter-finals thanks to goals from Jordan Ayew and Andre Ayew in the match played in Oyem.

The team has now booked a semi-final place against Cameroon on February 2 in Franceville.

But Nyantakyi has his eyes on the ultimate prize and he revealed this to journalists after the match.

“We are going for the trophy. Nothing has changed in relation to those plans or do we feel that something has changed? We are targeting the trophy because Ghanaians have waited 35 years for this.”

The Black Stars were given a tough test by the Congolese throughout the match.

They managed to get an equaliser from Paul-Jose M’Poku in the 68th minute; 5 minutes after Jordan Ayew opened the scoring but they failed to put away their chances.

Nyantaki admitted that the opponents were tough but he jokingly added that he was the team’s good-luck charm.

“It was good tactical game. Both coaches (Avram Grant for Ghana and Florent Imbenge for DR Congo) did well. The Congolese played well.

But I told my colleagues that once I was around, we would win. I had the feeling that we would be victorious.  I told Wilfried Osei that we would get the goals in the second half more especially in the goal that we defended in the first half.”

The Black Stars have made their sixth straight semi-final appearance in the African Nations Cup since 2008.

In 1982, long before I was born, The Black Stars of Ghana did the nation proud by winning its fourth AFCON title, much to the excitement and pride of the Nation, I would imagine; since personally I cannot wait for the Black Stars to lift the trophy again soon! What a day it would be. If the joy and pride I felt when AC Milan last won the UEFA Champions League title is anything to go by, then to say I would be ecstatic will be the understatement of the century.

I would not even pretend to be an astute follower of football, I barely remember the facts and the figures as displayed by many other people. I barely even remember the names of the players who played in the last AFCON for Ghana in 2015, yes, I remember the usual suspects, but that’s as far as it goes. So before going ahead to read this article, take this to be my disclaimer.

In the year 2014, the Black Stars of Ghana, took on the task of representing the Nation at the World Cup, and on the back of their astounding performances in South Africa, 4 years back, I was filled with childish glee and optimism, the Black Stars (B.S) were going to win the tournament! As fate or rather, misfortune will have it, the team put up a woeful performance, which in part stemmed from monetary disagreements and failed promises of the government of the day. Again, I must exercise responsibility and caution here, and state that, this claim, is based mainly from commentary and snippets of information picked up in the heat of the moment and during the Dzamefe Commission hearing. From this moment on, seeds of discord and animosity towards the B.S. were sown in the hearts of Ghanaians. Why did they put their blood-thirst for money before patriotism? A question I asked myself, a question, I am still looking forward to asking any of the leaders of the team. Like the many millions of Ghanaians, I have been left heartbroken and downtrodden because I expected the B.S to have placed more premium on making the nation proud. Let me make a confession, the urge to burn the two Black Stars jerseys I bought from the Puma Shop in the Accra Mall (trust me, they are not cheap! They are still worn anyway) was mooted, a sign of my personal detest for the team, however, I have since moved on from this point.

In 2015, the Black Stars were again in action, two penalties, would prove to be the hindrance from our history making quest, but did people care? No! Why? Because of the abhorrence they have for the Ghana Black Stars. Why? Because the general impression is that the players are overpaid and not patriotic. Now, I’ve deeply pondered on this, “Are the Black Stars Players unpatriotic because they demanded their due or typically as Ghanaians we’re just being hypocritical?”

As mentioned, the last time the Black Stars annexed the trophy was in 1982, which would beg the question, where are the players of the 82 squad? In fact, scratch that, the most important question to ask is: WHO are the members of the 82 squad? They are but distant memories in the minds of majority of Ghanaians, and non-existent in the minds of the younger generation. Yet say the name: Pele, Maradona, Ronaldo, Zidane and you would see the gleam in their eyes! Their tales have been told severally, their praises has been sung so many times, you would think they have paid payola. Even the autocorrect feature in Microsoft Word will correct you if you make an error in the spelling of their names! These people are “gods” idolized by their fellow countrymen! These are people whose exploits will forever remain, etched into the hearts and minds of people who love football! Even on the African continent, the name George Oppong Weah still resonates till this day. I was not born early enough to watch Mohammed Polo but videos of the exploits of Polo and oral history of his dribbling and mesmerizing abilities of opponents on the pitch can easily be compared to the likes of Lionel Messi in contemporary times.  The likes of Willie Klutse, Awuley Quaye (Snr), Samson Lamptey, Peter Akwei Maclean and Rev. Osei Kofi were as good as the current Black Stars players, in some cases even better. Where are they today? What is their economic and financial state today? The 1963 Black Stars team was promised a house each by Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, a promise which has not been honored up till date.

Is it to say, these plyers were not patriotic enough? Why aren’t their names resonating as much as it should? Where are the streets and statues erected for them (Lord Zlatan has a statue in Sweden)? What have we as a people done for our “Heroes”? The people who fought and risked life and limb to win us the glorious titles as the Champions of Africa. Or perhaps, they are living in so much comfort, an appropriate compensation for their valour. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but many of these players live in abject poverty or died paupers.

In fact, let me stretch this a little. One of the vivid memories of a match involving Ghana in my childhood was Ali Jarrah, a goalie very well admired! In 1993, he got injured whilst keeping posts for Ghana and his career ended. Last year, he said “Day in and out, I am heading towards my grave. They will wait till I die before they remember me. If I got paralyzed at 17 dying for my nation, what does the nation expect me to do now after 23 years?
I leave this to the world to judge. You can share my little story amongst friends and brothers so they know. When I die, I died because of pain”
. (culled from http://www.ghanaweb.com/GhanaHomePage/NewsArchive/I-am-dying-slowly-Ali-Jarrah-402652) and this is the fate of a young man who was on the verge of signing a deal with German club side Cologne. If he had opted not to keep during that tournament, perhaps, he would have made a truckload of money to last generations, yet for his love for Ghana, that failed to materialize. Twice, Michael Essien suffered potentially career ending injuries whilst playing for the national team. Again, his patriotism nearly cost him his career! Yet when he dodged a few games for Ghana, we labelled him a traitor, an ungrateful brat. Now his career has taken a nosedive, (resulting from his injuries suffered whilst playing for Ghana), all of a sudden, no one cares about Michael Essien anymore! The one time hailed hero of Ghana.

Let me not even talk of Jones Atequayefio of blessed memory, lest my hearts break even more.

Previously the complaint was the players do not play for national pride! Where is the pride in living and dying as a pauper! Where is the pride in having to beg for sympathizers to come to your aid so you can feed or pay your medical bills? Someone explain to me where the pride is. Yet, we want them to risk it all and risk suffering the same fate as the so called “Heroes”?

We are victims of our own hypocrisies. If I say, lets name a street after Asamoah Gyan, if one is not slapped, someone will ask, “ah didn’t we pay him winning bonus and appearance fees?” Or say let’s build a statue in Gyan’s honour you would be told, “after that useless penalty he took against Uruguay?” Yet we forget that even though Zidane cost France the 2006 World Cup trophy over his moment of madness, he is still adored in his country and hailed a Hero.

Now the Black Stars have agreed to have their bonuses slashed and still Ghanaians are unwilling to get behind the team and support them, to the point where people actually jubilate when the Stars lose a match. All we are doing is cutting our noses to spite our faces. Wherein lies our patriotism when we want the people who are representing the country to lose? We want the players to die for Ghana, yet as Ghanaians are we prepared to do same?

In a Facebook post, one Nathan Gadugah put more succinctly;

“It is only when Black Stars plays that we hear the lessons on patriotism and the need for our players to be patriotic.

Surprisingly the lessons are coming from the politicians who steal and misappropriate our scarce national resources; from journalists who take monies from politicians and bury the truth; from commercial drivers who have never in their lives respected our road traffic regulations and have killed people as a result; from business men who connive with politicians AND fleece our resources; from students who cheat in exams and head masters and mistresses who collect bribes before admitting qualified students to school; from police men who collect bribes from people, drivers and look on when the wrong things are done; from voters who elect people into office not because they genuinely believe these people are able to develop our country but because of what they will benefit directly when these people go into office. All these people believe in self-interest but pontificate about patriotism. Our Black Stars players are Ghanaians, not Europeans or Americans. They grew up learning that self-interest is more important than love for a country. And to be blunt the country which they are supposed to die for has done nothing for their predecessors who ‘died’ serving this country. I will not pretend to be more patriotic than these players and I pray no one does. These players cannot unlearn the bad practice of self-interest only because citizens have decided to withdraw their national support. It will take some time. But more importantly it will take those who are riding on horses and standing on roof tops preaching patriotism to live by what they preach. Let’s all be patriotic if we want our black stars to be patriotic.” (culled from https://web.facebook.com/ngadugah/posts/10211282553489235)

TRUST ME, IT IS BETTER TO RATHER BE UNPATRIOTIC AND COMFORTABLE, THAN BE HAILED A NATIONAL HERO, WHO WILL DIE A PAUPER AND WHOSE NAME WILL NOT BE REMEMBERED.

As Ghanaians, till we stop being hypocritical, we will not make any significant headway in any field.

I unreservedly support the Ghana Black Stars, they have their issues, but I will not be a hypocrite!

Andre Ayew scored from the spot as Ghana produced a nervy and uninspired 1-0 win over Uganda in their opening 2017 Africa Cup of Nations Group D opener in Port-Gentil on Tuesday.

The Ghanaians managed to stay afloat after a spirited second half display from the Cranes.

Black Stars coach, Avram Grant, heaved a sigh of relief with several questions marks about the ability of team to go all the way.

Andre Ayew opened the scoring from the spot kick in the 30th minutes after Asamoah Gyan was pulled down by Isaac Insinde inside the box.

The West Ham United forward made no mistake from the spot as he converted to give the Ghanaians the lead in Port-Gentil.

It was Andre’s 7th goal at the Africa Cup of Nations to equal Asamoah Gyan and Osei Kofi as Ghana’s all-time leading scorer at the continental showpiece.

The Black Stars could have scored more with Christian Atsu, Andre Ayew and Asamoah Gyan coming close in the first half.

But it was the Cranes who asked several questions in the early exchanges with Ghana right-back Harrison Afful struggling to contain the pace and trickery of Joseph Ochaya.

The East Africans looked more positive on the left flank with Tony Mawejje making things uncomfortable for the Black Stars.

Ghana began to find their rhythm by building up slowly from the back with John Boye and Daniel Amartey, as the Cranes created a huge wall at the heart of the park.

Partey’s tendency to go up front created a void in the midfield which allowed the Cranes easy access to the ball.

Gyan came close in the 15th minute as his header went wide, inches off the target, after a sweet cross from Harrison Afful with Amartey not covering quickly.

Atsu moved away from his marker into the box but his cross was intercepted for a corner – great opportunity to open the scoring on the 17th minute mark.

Again, the Newcastle United wide man created space to fire from close range but effort skyrockets.

Perhaps the biggest chance fell to Andre Ayew who missed with a miscued shot before he made amends from the spot kick.

Coach Avram Grant was forced to replace Abdul Baba Rahman as the Schalke defender’s ankle kicked as he attempted to stretch for the ball, falling to the ground in one move, turned and signalled to the bench to be substituted.

Versatile Anderlecht man, Frank Acheampong slotted in nicely and provided cover from the left-back for goalkeeper Razak Brimah.

Uganda had the perfect chance to pull parity but Isaac Insinde’s touch from a great cross was too feeble to worry Ghana.

Experienced Enyimba FC goalkeeper Fatau Dauda has been called up to replace injured Adam Kwarasey who has withdrawn from Ghana’s squad due to injury.

Dauda was a member of the team which trained at the St. Thomas Aquinas Park last week but was put on standby after signs that Norway based Adam Kwarasey could be available for the tournament.

But luck seems to have smiled on Dauda as Kwarasey will require three more weeks to recover fully thus his exclusion from the team.

The former AshGold goalkeeper will now be participating in his fourth AFCON competition having played in 2008, 2013, 2015 and now 2017.
