The governing National Democratic Congress has called on stakeholders in the country to call the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) to order for trying to put pressure on the Electoral Commission to immediately announce results from Wednesday’s polls.

According to them, the NPP is stampeding the Electoral Commission with such action.

“It is against this background that we felt that the NPP should be called to order when they were trying to stampede the Electoral Commission to declare results in less than 24 hours after the polls. We thought that it was not in keeping with due process and keeping with agreements that we had entered at IPAC with the Electoral Commission,” General Secretary of the NDC said at a press conference on Thursday.

The NPP had claimed that figures available to them suggest a 54.91 percent win for their candidate, Nana Akufo-Addo and called on President John Mahama to concede defeat.

Meanwhile addressing the press at the party’s headquarters in Accra Asiedu Nketia said all parties must wait for final declaration by the Electoral Commission.

He also said that “from the result in our collation system, we are confident that the NDC is cruising to victory.”

“We also feel that the Electoral Commission should be given time and they must have the opportunity to implement the decision of the reform commission and IPAC which agreed that even though there could be some electronic submission of results they must wait and get hold of the hard copies so that they can physically check that there will be no tampering of results during transmission.”

“We in the NDC remain committed to the new process and all the agreements entered into at IPAC relating to the collation of results and the declaration of same. We are therefore eagerly waiting for the electoral commission to do their work diligently and timeously, that is, within the 72 hours, so that we can know who is going to rule this country,” Asiedu Nketia added.

Hundreds of NPP supporters gather at party headquarters

Hundreds of supporters of the NPP earlier on Thursday thronged the party’s headquarters in Accra in a jubilant mood ready to celebrate their victory.

The Municipal Chief Executive for Kintampo North, Justice Michael Baffuor, who confirmed the incident to Citi News, said it occurred at about 9:00am Sunday morning.

He said although the General secretary’s car had its headlight area badly affected, its occupants were unhurt.

“The General Secretary called me that the taxi driver crossed him whiles he was heading to Kumasi, but nothing happened to him. So I have given them a new car and they have taken off to Kumasi,” he said.

The General Secretary of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has accused the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), of preventing northerners from transferring their votes to strongholds of the NPP in the on-going vote transfer exercise.

According to him, the act is an orchestrated attempt by the NPP to disenfranchise northerners and all other persons perceived to be supporting the NDC in the December polls.

Johnson Asiedu, popularly known as General Mosquito, made the allegation when he was speaking on a local radio station W.FM at Wa in the Upper West Region, as part of his working visit to the Upper West Region.

“The fact that a Northerner has decided to relocate to the Brong Ahafo, Ashanti or Eastern Region, does not mean that his civic rights should be taken away from him,” he said.

“That is why when we are registering people for elections, the biggest battle we fight with the NPP is that, those in smock are aliens and they should not be allowed to register anywhere in the south. Even the transfer of votes now, the northerners who happen to be plying their trades in Brong Ahafo and other areas, the challenges they are facing now in transferring their votes to where they have decided to live is now a big problem,“ he added.

“And it is your party people who are preventing them from registering thinking that because they have taken a decision to relocate to areas they were not born from, it is a crime and they must be denied their civic right of participating in voting,” General Mosquito continued.

Asiedu Nketia was also worried that, some chiefs have allowed themselves to be used by the NPP to prosecute the agenda.

“NPP thinks that in collaboration with some chiefs, they must determine how the northerners living on their lands should vote and they have the courage to make public announcement that ‘this is my village, and anybody who lives here, if NPP doesn’t win here we will drive you away and take your land,” he noted.

“So when you see settlers all over the country trouping to vote for the NDC, it is not about tribalism, it is about they moving to a system which will give them their civic rights.”

He further assured supporters of the NDC that, their leadership is working hard to ensure that no voter is disenfranchised.
