The office of the Gbese Mantse has said that the Ministry of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs has no mandate to instruct Gbese Mantse, Nii Ayi Bonte II, to stop parading himself as a member of the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs.

The Spokesperson of Gbese Mantse Nii Ayi-Bonte II, Nii Annan Agbo, in a Citi News, said there was no basis for the Ministry’s order restraining the Chief.

[contextly_sidebar id=”L3wxSKJQWU6v5tjwbAauyRwjxcYSC4Bk”]The Minister of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Kofi Dzamesi, in a letter dated October 27, 2017, and sighted by citifmonline.com, ordered Nii-Ayi Bonte and Nii Adama Latse II, the two claimants of the Ga stool to seize parading themselves as members of the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs.

According to the Ministry, the two were inducted into the regional house of chiefs under unclear circumstances, which nullifies their inclusion as members.

He said,  “the two should not attend upon the House, participate in any matters of the House, and no benefits and privileges or all other incidentals should be extended to the two referred above.”

But the spokesperson for the Gbese Mantse insists that Nii-Ayi Bonte was duly inducted into the Regional House of Chiefs.

“I am not happy about the statement because the minister is not a principal kingmaker. This is related to Chieftaincy. Before anyone goes to the regional house of chiefs, the president at the traditional council has endorsed the person. I don’t know why he passed that statement that Nii Ayi Bonte has no right to go to there. If he has any issue, he should go to the regional house of chiefs or the traditional council to enquire before passing any comment. The chieftaincy minister has trespassed. Gbese is at peace. Nobody is fighting the Gbese Mantse,” he told Citi News.

Gbese Mantse, Nii Ayi Bonte II

Nii Adama Latse II is yet to respond to the Minister’s letter.

Reverse Nii Adama Latse’s induction as Ga Mantse – Ga Traditional Council

In October this year, acting President of the Ga Traditional Council, Nii Dodoo Nsaki II, who is also Otublohum Mantse, asked the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs to reverse the induction of Nii Adama Latse as the Ga Mantse into its fold.

The Council said at the time that it had picked reports in sections of the media suggesting that Nii Adama Latse had been inducted into the House of Chiefs as Ga Mantse.

4 arrested in fresh clashes over Ga Mantse installation

The confusion over who qualifies to be the Ga Mantse has existed since the demise of Boni Nii Amugi II in December 2004, which was followed by several people laying claim to the stool.

Nii Tackie Teiko Tsuru II became the fifth Ga Mantse to be installed since the death of Nii Amugi II.

According to Ga tradition, the kingship rotates among four royal houses, namely, Teiko Tsuru We, Amugi We, Abola Piam We and Tackie Kommey We.

The general consensus is that, it is the Abola Piam We’s turn to enstool a Ga Mantse.

On October 25, 2017, four persons were arrested, after chaos erupted during a press conference by the Abola Piam We (Clan), at Ga Mashie in Accra, following threats by the Royal House to install a new Ga Mantse.

Nii Ayi-Bonte II, Gbese Mantse has denied reports that the Ghana Police Service invited him for questioning over the Adjabeng Ankrah Family lands in Accra.

The Gbese Mantse who is also the Adonten of Ga State explained that no court of competent jurisdiction has served him with any writ of summons to appear before it.
It was reported over the weekend that the Gbese Mantse had been summoned to appear before court over a land dispute but he failed to turn up in court.

But in a Statement issued in Accra on Monday [February 14, 2017], Nii Ayi-Bonte described stories suggesting so as untrue.

The statement described the story as “baseless and false “concocted by a certain individual to tarnish his reputation “turn to blemish my sound and positive proven track record, which I have natured and gained for so many years”.

The Gbese Mantse said he was as a gazetted chief and “allodia owner of the Gbese stool lands which included North Industrial Area, Kwame Nkrumah Circle also known as “Faa No Faa” and Avenor.

“Even if, a family or any person is claiming a portion of land, they know exactly the processes to route their grievances or complaint through for redress.

“However if violence or force is applied, that is where the Police intervenes to bring peace,” the statement said.

According to the statement, Nii Ayi-Bonte said: “As a law abiding citizen of Ghana and respected Ga Chief, if the Court or the Police invite me, I will honour the invitation”.

Last week the Ghana Police Service hauled Nii Ayi Bonte, and two others before an Accra Circuit Court, for alleged forcefully entry into Adjabeng Ankrah family land at the Industrial Area.

According to the Court report, Nii Ayi Bonte and his accomplices, Nii Okaikoi aka Korle We and one Francis alias Korea Man failed to turned up in court when the case was called on Thursday.

The Police prosecutor, Inspector Ernest Acheampong therefore prayed the court for a bench warrant to arrest the accused persons since according to the Prosecutor, they were warned by the Greater Accra Police Command to appear in Court but failed.

The Court presided over by Mrs Ruby Naa Adjeley Quaison however declined to issue a bench warrant saying there was nothing on her case docket indicating that the accused have been asked to appear before the court.

The court therefore directed the police that “if the Police wanted the accused persons to appear in court they know what to do”.

The matter was therefore adjourned to February 23.

The Gbese Dzase kingmakers have threatened to take legal action against embattled Gbese Mantse, Nii Ayi Bonte II to force him to abdicate his throne.

This comes on the back of a seven-day ultimatum given to Nii Ayi Bonte II to abdicate which expired yesterday (Wednesday).

The Gbese Mantse has come under intense pressure from some Ghanaians to abdicate  after vowing to do same if the National Democratic Congress is defeated in the December 7 polls.

Meanwhile several efforts by some Ghanaians to get the chief to honour his promise has proved futile.

[contextly_sidebar id=”6kiwWtTGIyxa7RKaGygakCfosDcJytMu”]Spokesperson for the Gbese Dzase Kingmakers, Numo Okai Keteku in an interview said that they are currently discussing the next line of action with their lawyers to restore dignity to the throne.

“We gave him a week and he has not obliged to our request so we the Dzase are taking action to see to it that he is sanctioned for what he did in contravention of the chieftaincy law. We are taking legal action; we are seeing our attorneys and they have decided to take it on.”

The kingmakers hope to get the Supreme Court to sanction the Gbese Mantse off his stool for contravening the chieftaincy laws.

While the group is bent on ensuring he lives up to his word, two other groups are claiming that the chief’s speech was taken out of contest.

Gbese Mantse won’t step down – Youth
Meanwhile, the youth of Gbese have rallied behind their chief saying calls on him to step down will not materialize.

According to the youth only the kingmakers of Gbese have the mandate to compel Ayi Bonte to abdicate.

“The seven day ultimatum cannot work, because those giving the ultimatum are not coming from the Gyase house so how do they give such ultimatum. Those given the ultimatum are nobody. Who are they and what is their capacity? He will never step down. He will only do that only when those who put him on the throne tells him to get down. Apart from the principal kingmakers of Gbese nobody can ask him to step down,” youth leader for Gbese, Nii Anan Agbo Meshack added.
