The Ablekuma Central District Sanitation and Motor Magistrate Court, has prosecuted nine institutions for contravening Sections 1, 2, 3 and 10 of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly’s (AMA) Waste Management by-law 1995.

They are Agricultural Development Bank (adb), the Korle bu Branch of the Ghana Private Transport Union (GPRTU), Abbosey Okai branch of Ghana Oil (GOIL), Samir Engineering Company, Prudential Bank, Access Bank and the Yellow City Hotel.

[contextly_sidebar id=”TPwyjghF03ENjG9wuszi6fY5E8mgYnrd”]The court fined the nine institutions various amounts of money totaling GH¢2,280.00 equivalent to 190 penalty units for their refusal to register with the AMA Accredited Waste Management Contractor assigned to their areas of operation.

The Prudential bank, GOIL, GPRTU, adb and Samir Engineering were made to pay a fine of GH¢360.00 each, while Access bank and Yellow city hotel also paid GH¢240.00 each due to their efforts to register after the summons.

Mr. Edward Nii Ayi Okai, the prosecutor told the court presided by Madam Linda Amissah that the institutions failed to comply with the Assembly’s directive to register with its accredited Waste Management Contractor to collect their waste.

Madam Amissah in her ruling urged the offending institutions to be ambassadors of a clean environment while cautioning that anyone found flouting AMA by-laws would be made to face severe sanctions to serve as a deterrent to others.

She called on organisations that have not registered with waste service providers under the polluter-pay policy to do so.

A bench warrant was issued for the arrest of the Abossey Okai branch Managers of Ghana Commercial Bank and Best Point Savings and Loans for their failure to appear before court when they were summoned.

Kwame Mensah, an unemployed man, who defiled a ten-year-old girl in the Achimota Forest Reserve in Accra, was on Monday sentenced to 20 years imprisonment by an Accra Circuit Court.

Kwame Mensah pleaded not guilty, but was however found guilty on the charge of defilement by the court presided over Mrs. Abena Oppong Adjin-Doku.

Mensah was arrested by members of the Achimota Forestry Rapid Response Task Force, who chanced upon him, as he was dressing up just after having sexual intercourse with the ten-year-old victim.

Mrs. Jane Harriet Akweley Quaye, who read Mrs Adjin-Doku’s judgment, asked Mensah if he had anything to say before the sentence was passed.

Mensah prayed the court to tamper justice with mercy and forgive him. According to Mensah, his mother was old and he was the one taking care of her.

“I have a son who is currently staying with my mother and I am the one taking care of him. Please forgive me,” Mensah added.

The facts, as presented by the Prosecutor, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Agnes Boafo, are that, the victim is a class three pupil residing with her grandmother at Maamobi. The convict resides at Adjiringanor.

The complainant, Mrs Edith Ansah is the Regional Manager of the Forestry Commission.

On January 17, this year, at about 10:00 hours, Mensah spotted the victim at her school at Kotobabi and convinced her to follow him in order to collect some books and pens for her teacher.

The prosecutor said Mensah lured the victim to board a car and took her to the Achimota Forest Reserve, where he asked her to lie on the floor.

“The girl refused and started crying. Mensah slapped her and pulled out a knife, threatening to kill her if she does not comply. He then had sexual intercourse with her,” ASP Boafo said.

The prosecutor explained that luck, however, eluded Mensah when he was spotted by the Achimota Forestry Rapid Response Task Force just as he started dressing after the sexual act.

After a hot chase, ASP Boafo said Mensah was arrested and sent to Mrs Ansah, who lodged a complaint with the Domestic Violence and Victim’s Support Unit at Tesano whilst the victim was given a medical form to seek treatment.

Mensah, however, denied the offence, saying that, the Task Force did not arrest him at the Forest as alleged.

According to Mensah he was arrested in front of the victim’s school and was subjected to severe beatings, however, investigations extended to the school showed that Mensah lied to the Police.

A Cape Coast High Court has sentenced a 28 year-old sprinter bus driver to a fine of GH¢600.00 for careless and inconsiderate driving, negligently causing harm and driving without a license.

The convict, Prosper Agbadzi, pleaded guilty to all the charges and will serve two months prison term or in default pay the fine.

Police Chief Inspector Samuel Tupeng, who prosecuted, told the Court that on Thursday, December 8, 2016 at about 1630hours, Agbadzi was driving a Benz Sprinter bus with registration number (GT 5129- 16) from Takoradi to Accra with 18 passengers.

He said on reaching a section of the road near the University of Cape Coast (UCC) Primary School, he failed to drive with care and lost control of the vehicle which somersaulted and landed on the side of the road.

According to the prosecution, all the passengers sustained various degrees of injury, and were rushed to the UCC Hospital where some were treated and discharged, but a 49-year-old woman was admitted for further treatment.

The Economic and Financial Court on Monday conducted in camera the hearing of the case of 35 former employees of the National Service Scheme (NSS) implicated in an alleged massive fraud of the scheme.

This was after the court upheld prosecution’s prayer that, the witness who was to testify had received various threats on his life, hence want the witness evidence to be heard in camera.

Prosecution Mrs. Marina Appiah-Opare, Principal State Attorney prayed the court that on the basis under which it was seeking the witness be heard in camera emanated from Article 19 of the 1992 Constitution.

Mrs. Appiah-Opare described the witness “an undercover and an officer of the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI).”

According to the prosecutor, the witness since the beginning of investigations of the matter the operative has received several threats on his life adding the constitution allowed in camera hearing for the protection of life where an individual was concerned.

Mr Egbert Faibille Junior, one of the defence counsels vehemently opposed to the in camera hearing saying prosecution’s application was needless.

According to Mr Faibille, the matter was a criminal one and as such prosecution’s application should have been brought before the court on notice.

He again demanded the appointment letter of the witness who had been described by prosecution as an “undercover”.

“This is a misapplication made by prosecution, we have been ambushed. This is an infraction of the fundamental human rights of the accused persons,” Mr Faibille said.

He said the public ought to know what transpire in the court hence the media should not be precluded in the case.

The court, presided over by Mrs. Georgina Mensah-Datsa overruled defence counsel’s application.

Journalists covering the case were asked by the court to leave as it commenced with the in-camera hearing.

Alhaji Imoro Alhassan, Ex-Executive Director of NSS is standing trial with 34 other persons implicated in an alleged massive fraud at the Scheme.

Alhaji Imoro is facing an additional charge of “giving bribe to influence a public officer.”

He is said to have on August 1 to September 26, 2014, given GH¢25,000.00 and GH¢15,000.00 to one Charles Kipo, of the Bureau of National Investigation (BNI) Investigations, to influence him.

Alhaji Imoro, and 34 others have been put before the Court for conspiracy to commit crime, giving bribe to influence a public officer, and stealing.

They have all pleaded not guilty to the charges of stealing more than GH¢107.8 million belonging to the State through the payment of ghost or non-existing service personnel.

They have been granted bail in various sums, ranging from GH¢30,000.00 to GH¢5 million by the court.

An Accra Circuit Court on Monday remanded  Seidu Mahama, a Land guard on the charges of conspiracy to commit crime and robbery.

Seidu, was said to have conspired with three others now at large and robbed a couple of their personal belongings including monies on January 25, at Bortianor in Accra.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges but was remanded by the court presided over by Mr Aboagye Tandoh to reappear on February 27.

The facts of the case as presented by Superintendent Kweku Bampah are that the complainants are Albert Allotey and Irene Adubea Parker Allotey, a couple residing in their private apartment at Bortianor Red Top, whilst the accused person is a land guard at the same area.

He said on January 25, at about 1830 hours four masked men all armed with AK 47 and pistols broke into their house amidst assaults and threats of death on them.

They succeeded in robbing Albert of his sea blue Honda CRV Saloon car , 42-inch flat screen television set, one Hisence 28-inch flat screen, one multi TV decoder, one DSTV decoder, one Hoofer sound system unit , five assorted mobile phones  and an amount of Ghc550.00.

Superintendent Bempah said, the accused persons and his accomplices further robbed Irene of her blue Toyota Corolla and assorted jewelries worth Ghc5,000.00 and bolted.

He told the court that a report was made to the police and investigations led to the arrest of the accused person per his black Honda Saloon car which was used to attack the complainant’s house.

He said the same car which was used to escort the stolen cars out of the complainant’s house was identified by a witness who saw the unusual quick movement of the complainant’s two vehicles from their house.

The prosecution said the police traced the identity of the Honda Saloon to the house of the accused person at Bortianor and he admitted ownership of the vehicle and was arrested.

On January 31, the Regional crime office organised an identification parade where Albert identified the accused person as being part of the gang that came to his house to rob them.

Ephraim Amuzu, a 24-year old man, has been put before an Accra Circuit Court for allegedly defiling a 13-year old at Spintex in Accra but he has, however, denied the offence before the Police.

He told the Police that he only inserted his left forefinger into the victim’s vagina.

Charged with defilement, Amuzu pleaded not guilty but the court remanded him into lawful custody to reappear on February 1.

Prosecuting, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Sophia Ennim, told the court that the complainant is a trader residing at Second Boutique, near Motorway area whilst the accused is a supplier of coca cola products.

DSP Ennim said the accused lived in the same house with the complainant’s aunty and the victim.

On January 16, this year, prosecution said the complainant visited the victim but did not meet her. Later the victim and her other siblings returned home and narrated the ordeal the accused person had put her through.

The complainant, however, overheard her narration and when quizzed the victim further told the complainant that on January 15, this year, her (victim’s) aunty who sold porridge by the road side asked her to go and wash utensils and take her bath.

Coincidently, prosecution said, the accused person was standing at the road side by his bicycle. Amuzu followed the victim home and took advantage of the absence of the other tenants and had sex with the victim in the complainant’s Aunty’s room after covering her mouth.

Not satisfied with his sexual activities, Amuzu again had sex with the victim the same day after wearing condom and covering her mouth with a handkerchief.

On January 17, this year, the complainant reported the matter to the Police and a medical form was issued so the victim could be examined.
