The driver of the gas tanker that exploded at Atomic junction in Accra a fortnight ago,  who escaped unhurt, Yussif Seidu, has died mysteriously after becoming unconscious during a meeting of LPG truck drivers.

He was pronounced dead at the Tema General Hospital.

The Public Relations Officer of the LPG Marketing Companies Association, Kwame Owiredu, who confirmed the incident to Citi News, said the driver who escaped unhurt after the gas explosion, collapsed at a meeting of LPG truck drivers on [Thursday], and was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

He added that, the cause of death is yet to be established, but indicated that, he will be buried today [Friday] according to Islamic customs.

[contextly_sidebar id=”TM3HdqnytMT8Hnu0qB057pvorL23RlA8″]“I can confirm to you that Yussif Seidu, the driver who was in charge of the tanker that caught fire at Atomic Junction is no more with us. I can also say that he didn’t die as a result of any injury flowing from the accident that occurred, but he died a natural death.”

Mr. Seidu said they were celebrating with him on Thursday because he had a new tanker.

“Whilst we were in a conversation with him, he went unconscious. He was rushed to the Tema General Hospital and after some few checks on him, the doctors pronounced him dead. So it’s an unfortunate situation, and we are really sad. They have not confirmed the cause of death. He is a Muslim so when his family had the news, they demanded for the body, so that is the arrangement we are doing now, to send his remains to Kumasi where his family is,” he added.

The Executive Director of the Consumer Protection Agency(CPA), Mr. Kofi  Kapito says consumers will be unable to pay the full cost of petroleum products if government totally scraps the subsidies on them.

According to Mr. Kapito, Ghanaians cannot bear the full cost of petroleum products since most of them are low income earners.

Government spent GH¢1.5 billion on petroleum subsidy alone from 2009 to 2012.

Consumers currently pay about 72 percent subsidies for kerosene and 88 percent for the premix fuel used in the fishing industry respectively.

Ghana is currently experiencing fuel shortage due to government’s inability to pay about 1.5 billion cedis owed the Bulk Oil Distributors Company and other Oil Marketing Companies.

The shortage has generated public debate as to whether government should continue subsidizing petroleum products or allow consumers to bear the full cost.

Speaking at Citi FMs Roundtable discussion on Fuel Subsidies, Mr. Kapito noted that “consumers will also have to pay more for public transportation if subsidies on petroleum products are scrapped off.”

“My only question from the consumer side is that how am i going to afford to pay for these services that I am being asked to pay.It is going to be a chicken and egg situation,”Mr. Kapito said.

According to him, “it will be difficult if government does not provide other means of transportation when the full recovery policy is implemented.”

He noted that the “challenge of Ghanaians is their  inability to enjoy social interventions in terms of petroleum products.”

The University of Professional Studies, Accra, (UPSA), has inaugurated a new Centre for Public Accountability.

The centre will promote and enhance sound public sector accountability institutions and mechanisms in Africa by providing practitioners with the opportunity for continual learning, development, research and knowledge sharing as well as consultancy support.

In his welcome address, Vice Chancellor of UPSA, Professor Joshua Alabi,  said apart from becoming the leading accounting institution in the country, authorities of the University are also working to make it nationally relevant and globally recognized.

He said the Centre would also help bridge the gap of public accountability and urged all stakeholders to embrace it in order to fulfill its objectives.

Director for  the Centre for Public Accountability, Albert Kan-Dapaah underscored the importance of the Centre, saying ”accountability was one of the weakest elements of governance structure in Ghana and the West African sub-region which accounted for high levels of corruption in the public sector.”

The former minister of state added that the Centre for Public Accountability sought to promote the concepts of Accountability in Public Sector Management.

He said the centre would also conduct cutting-edge research into the concept of public sector accountability and build the capacity of public sector practitioners and lawmakers through highly attractive training programmes.

“We want to build the capacity of public sector practitioners and lawmakers through highly interactive training programmes and we want to also offer consultancy support to key accountability institutions including supreme audit institutions and public accounts committee,” he said.

Dr Kan-Dapaah also added “we want to maintain the most accurate and reliable database on public transactions such as the public debt, petroleum revenues and expenditure and donor funds.

It is not our ambition to catch thieves, but we will be interested to find out how they managed to abuse the system and come out with policy recommendations to seal the loopholes,” he added.

In his remarks, Council Chairman of UPSA, Mr Justice Nii Aryeetey said the Centre, would position UPSA as a leading tertiary- based think-tank in the provision of quality and relevant training, support to promote public sector accountability in Africa.

Dr. Dapaah announced that the centre has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with The Hague University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands to jointly implement a project financed by the Netherlands government to develop and deliver practice-oriented training modules in Financial Management for Finance graduates and professionals in Ghana.

Mr Justice Nii Aryeetey, Council Chairman of UPSA, urged all stakeholders, particularly the media, to support the laudable initiative, as they are expected to actively play their watchdog role for public sector accountability.
