Security Analyst, Dr. Kwesi Anning believes President John Mahama’s concession of defeat in the country’s election puts him in a strong position to ensure the desired resolution to the current political crisis in The Gambia.

President Mahama, together with some other ECOWAS Heads of state, will be in the Gambian capital of Banjul today [Tuesday] to help find a solution to the political deadlock in the country.

Gambia’s President, Yahya Jammeh was defeated in the country’s general election by opposition leader Adama Barrow on December 2.

But he came out on December 9 to annul the election results and demand a re-run, thereby going back on his earlier concession.

President Jammeh’s rejection of the election results came a few hours after President Mahama had conceded defeat in the 2016 general election to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo.

In a Citi News interview, Dr. Anning indicated that President Mahama’s ability to hold himself up as an example of gracious defeat and evidence of a fulfilling life after a presidency could be key to resolving the deadlock.

“There is a complexity of issues involved here, but the trump card for ECOWAS right now is President John Mahama instead of sending an expeditionary force,” he stated.

We should have seen this coming

The security analyst also suggested that various analyst in the sub-region should have seen this situation coming.

“Yahyeh Jammeh hardly ever tells the truth or remains consistent and I think it is the failure of the of our analysts and intelligence services that thought Jammeh would not change his mind.”

Nana Akufo-Addo further commended the incumbent, President Yahaya Jammeh, “for graciously conceding defeat, thereby laying to rest any lingering suspicion and anxiety about the fate of Gambia in the aftermath of the elections.”

“It is my hope and expectation that the President-Elect’s tenure in office will be marked by the delivery of progress and prosperity to the Gambian people in conditions of freedom and the rule of law,” Nana Akufo-Addo added in his statement.

Adama Barrow, 51, will be the third Gambian President since the country attained independence in 1965.

The Head of  Gambia’s Electoral Commission declared Adama Barrow as the winner of the 2016 presidential election, with 263,515 votes to Yahya Jammeh’s 212,099 votes.

A third candidate, Mamma Kande, polled 102,969 votes.

Mr. Barrow led a coalition of seven opposition parties to end the tyrannical rule of Mr. Jammeh, who has been accused of suppressing freedoms, jailing political opponents and critics of his government, and in some cases killing such persons.
