Some musicians in Ghana are still not convinced by Obuor’s account of how the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) used the GH¢ 2 million given to the music industry 5 years ago.

Music duo Gallaxy who are not satisfied with accounts made by MUSIGA President Bice ‘Obuor’ Osei Kuffuor, told Citi Showbiz that the President should publish a breakdown of how the money was spent.

“We doubt his figures. How can you use GH¢ 800, 000 for research, another GH¢ 800, 000 for music festival, and share the remaining for your administration? They should give us the breakdown. We want to know. They should publish it in the media for us to see,” they said.

Gallaxy added MUSIGA has disappointed the music industry by using the government fund for things that were not the industry’s priority.

“We have a lot of pressing needs like performance centres, studios and others. They have just wasted the money and must account for it into detail. They must account for every pesewa,” they noted.

Meanwhile, in an exclusive interview with Citi Showbiz, the President of the Musicians Union of Ghana explained that the union used the budget allocation judiciously.

According to him, the government granted only two of the components they presented in their proposal and so could not have used the money for all the other things the musicians are suggesting.

“…after reading through our proposal, the government said it could only grant two of our requests and those components were what the 2012 budget statement for the arts captured,” he said.

President of MUSIGA – Obuor

Obour further explained the GH¢ 2 million was earmarked for impact assessment of the music industryand the 2012 Music Fair, as was captured in the 2012 budget statement.

According to Obour, about GH¢ 800,000 used to pay for the research and its execution (eg. Paying research consultants) and GH¢ 800, 000 was also used for the Music Fair. About GH¢ 400, 000 was used for Institutional Strengthening and GH¢ 100, 000 was given to the Ghana Association of Phonographic Industries for their administration needs.

He said the results of the research has benefited the industry in diverse ways and is hopeful its long-term effects would manifest with the passage of time.

The GH¢ 2 million was given to the music sector in 2012 as part of government allocation in its fiscal budget.

Gallaxy, noted for hit songs like ‘Bokoboko,’ ‘Qualities,’ ‘Dab,’ ‘Gborgborvor,’ ‘Holla at Me’ and Woti Ate which takes a swipe at the MUSIGA President.

US safety regulators have announced a formal recall of the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 after reports of fires caused by faulty batteries.

The South Korean tech giant had already launched a voluntary recall after user complaints about ‘exploding’ phones.

According to Samsung, the problem affects 2.5 million devices globally, including 1 million in the US.

The recall comes at a crucial time as rival Apple has just released its new iPhone 7 flagship model.

“Because this product presents such a serious fire hazard, I am urging all consumers… to take advantage of this recall right away,” Elliot Kaye, chairman of the US Consumer Product Safety Commission said.

Mr Kaye said Samsung should not have tried to do the recall by itself, saying: “Anybody who thinks that a company going out on its own is going to provide the best recall for that company, and more importantly for the consumer, needs to have more than their phone checked,”

So far, Samsung has received 92 reports of the batteries overheating in the US, including 26 reports of burns and 55 of property damage, according to the commission’s website.

The company said it would speed up its recall, with Tim Baxter, president of Samsung Electronics America saying that “consumer safety is always our highest priority.”

Flight warnings

Samsung has come under fire for its response to reports of battery problems over the past weeks.

On 2 September the firm said it would stop selling the phones and offered to replace the ones already sold.

The company last week advised people to stop using the device.

Samsung also said it would limit the batteries of the Note 7 to 60% of their capacity via a software update.

The US Department of Transportation meanwhile has ordered airline passengers not to bring the phones on planes unless they keep them turned off and don’t charge them during the flight.

Passengers were even advised against packing the phones into any checked-in luggage.

A number of airlines around the globe have also banned the phone from being used or charged on their planes.

The phone was launched on 19 August and had been generally well-received by critics and consumers.

The Galaxy Note 7 model is the latest of Samsung’s series of so-called phablets – smartphones with very large screens.

Two Ghanaians, including the owner of Le Baron Hotel at East Legon in Accra, David Kwadwo Anim, have been busted at the Heathrow Airport in London for alleged drug trafficking and money laundering.

The other suspect is Kofi Antwi Nkansah, a businessman.

They were arrested by the London Metropolitan Police.

Anim has been described by the security agencies as the leader within the drug trafficking organisation responsible for co-ordinating the transportation of large quantities of cocaine and heroin around the world.

Major drug gangs

He is also alleged to have serious ties with major drug gangs in Europe, South America and the United States of America.

The two suspects were said to have delivered 500 kilogrammes of heroin to undercover drug enforcement officials on January 22, 2014 without any incident.

Provisional  arrest warrant

Briefing the Daily Graphic in Accra Monday, the Deputy Executive Secretary of the Narcotics Control Board (NACOB), Nii Lante Blankson, said the arrest was in pursuant to a provisional arrest warrant issued by the United States for the arrest of the two Ghanaians and a Nigerian.

According to him, Anim, Nkansah and Adjayi Akpo, the Nigerian, had each been indicted and charged in the Southern District Court of New York for the violation of United States Drug Enforcement laws.

He said Adjayi was, however, on the run but said an intensive search had been mounted for his arrest.

Nii Blankson said since 2012, the NACOB, in collaboration with its foreign counterparts, had been conducting a joint operation on Anim.

The arrests

He said Anim had been able to escape arrest until April 26, 2014 when he was busted at the Heathrow Airport while going through arrival formalities.

Nii Blankson indicated that the following day, April 27, 2014, Nkansah was also arrested on arrival at Heathrow from one of the Asian countries.

He said the two suspects were to be extradited from the United Kingdom to the Unites States to face trial.
