Managers of Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) operating in the Tamale Metropolis have expressed their frustration over recent attacks by armed robbers at their fuel outlets.

Six fuel stations have been attacked within two weeks.

These include a Shell fuel station at Kakpayili, two Naagamni fuel stations at Kanshegu and Kasalgu, and Superior Oil fuel station at Datoyili.

The suspected robbers killed four pump attendants, a driver and a security guard.

The most recent attack occurred at the Kakpagyili Shell filling station on Saturday, January 27, 2018, where the security guard was killed.

The Managing Director of the Shell fuel station, Osman Mohammed, told Citi News that the operation which began at their station at 2:00am, lasted for three hours.

According to him, the pump attendants were tied up in the mini-mart, while the security man’s corpse was found behind the main building.

Osman Mohammed attributed the situation to security lapses, and appealed to the police patrol teams to intensify their night patrols in the area.

Area Manager of Naagamni Oil Marketing Company, Razak Nuhu, whose two stations were also robbed admonished the police to be proactive.

He said some of the pump attendants were beaten to pulp, and were receiving treatment at various hospitals.

Razak Nuhu said the armed robbers bolted with unspecified amounts of their daily sales.

The supervisor of the Kakpagyili Shell filling station, Yidana Abdul Fatawu, said they had been traumatized by the incident.

He revealed the resignation of three pump attendants following the deadly incident.

Some chiefs and people of Menekpo, a community in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality of the Eastern Region, have expressed their displeasure with the construction of a fuel station at Menekpo-Manya Klo.

They believe their lives are being threatened with the location of the supposed fuel station on their land.

Addressing a press conference, Asafoatse Hervi II of Menekpo said the construction of the fuel station came with a number of health implications, as they also fear a possible fire outbreak.

“It is a known fact that the operation of a fuel station comes with adverse health hazards and consequences on human beings, we aware of the negative impact on the community especially those who live around.”

He added that, “fuel stations are authorized to display warning signs such as highly flammable, no smoking, switch off phones, turn off engine, no naked fire, but this is the case where the location of the said fuel station in the heart of our community very close to residential homes, where fire is being used domestically on daily basis. We wish to place on record that, the area where the fuel station is under construction is a residential area, consisting of homes, also the place is close to the only community primary school and JHS with over 700 students population, a community library, public toilet among others.”

Asafoatse Hervi II, further stated that, with the recent incidences recorded in the country where several lives have been lost, they will strongly oppose the construction of the fuel station, “for example, the explosion of the Goil fuel station near Kwame Nkrumah circle on June 3rd, 2015, which claimed about 150 lives destroying several properties and the recent one at La-Badi, are the reasons we will not sit down idle for the worse to happen to our people.”

He has however called on all stakeholders and regulatory bodies to be up and doing, and revoke the permits of the fuel station for the sake of peace.

“We wish to put on record that, the owner of the said fuel station never consulted us before starting the project, and we are surprised how he even obtained permit in the first place. Menekpo has been a very peaceful community until we recently saw the construction of the fuel station, to ensure the continuous peace and security of Menekpo; we are appealing to authorities not to entertain such projects”.

He concluded that “with the full endorsement and the backing of the Paramount Chief of Manya-Klo, Nene Sakite II, who has also stated his displeasure with the location of the fuel station, we wish to remind the regulatory bodies and owners of the station in question that, we are the custodians of the land, and have the right to add our voices to issues and matters which will impede the progress of our people and also cause problems for them.”

The Eastern Regional Disaster Management Committee has ordered that construction works on a filling station at Anglo Town, a suburb of Koforidua, be halted.

This comes amid growing concerns over the safety of residents in the area.

The filling station is being built close to a cluster of houses, and this the Regional Minister, Mrs. Mavis Ama Frimpong Gati, said posed serious threat to lives and property.

In the event of an accident, innocent lives, she indicated, would be lost.

Mrs. Gati, who chairs the committee, warned that anybody, who flouted the order would be arrested by the police and prosecuted.

Some residents in the area had earlier demonstrated to express their anger over the siting of the project.

They said they felt “very unsafe” living close to a filling station.

It may be recalled that the committee had requested the New Juaben Municipal Assembly to withdraw the building permit given to the owners of the station but this was largely ignored.

Mr. Kwabena Okyere-Kusi, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), said the assembly was rendered impotent, as all the public institutions, required by law to sanction such projects, had “okayed it”.

That, he said, made it extremely difficult for them to have acted any differently.
