Operators on the Floating, Production, Storage, and Offloading (FPSO) Dr. Kwame Nkrumah have served notice the vessel will shut down.

This is to allow for maintenance works on the vessel’s bearing at the Jubilee oilfields.

This was announced by a Petroleum Engineer at the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), Albert Longman Newman.

[contextly_sidebar id=”WGRuZh6uZuTslOod8DRfibH6uRATHUmN”]The exercise will be the first of three shutdowns to be carried out this year.

“We have three shutdowns, one is for stabilization; we want to stabilize the turret bearing by jacking the bearing to a very stable position. That will occur within the first of February to 21st February. Then we will do a preparatory work between the 21st to 19th of March, where we will have a second shut down,” he explained.

He stated that “the second shutdown will be mainly aimed at cleaning the debris while fixing other parts of the vessel  that are in poor shape to free space for possible rotation of the FPSO”.

He added that the third and final shutdown will be in November to carry out a similar exercise.

Mr. Newman’s comments follow earlier assertions by Energy Minister, Boakye Agyarko that the vessel will be shut down twice.

Mr. Agyarko had asserted that the vessel will be shut down in January and March this year.

However, Mr. Newman stated that the shutdown is necessary to allow for a smooth operation of the FPSO in 2019.

He spoke to Citi Business News at the sidelines of a dissemination workshop on petroleum funds organized by the Ministry of Finance.

Meanwhile, Mr. Newman is optimistic the maintenance works will enhance the output of the FPSO to sustain its production level for 2019.

The Ghana National Gas Company (Ghana Gas) has resumed gas supply to the Aboadze Thermal Plant in Takoradi after the Atuabo gas processing plant was shut down for routine maintenance.

So far, Ghana Gas, the operators of the Atuabo gas processing plant, has supplied about 80 million standard cubic feet (mmscf) of gas to the Aboadze plant to generate about 250 megawatts (MW) of power for the national grid.[contextly_sidebar id=”hK8PujhYVZBtvu57paRUn3sC7RJD5iBz”]According to the management of the Atuabo plant, although the facility had the capacity to process its maximum target of 150mmscf/day, it was transmitting only 80mmscf, since that was the volume it could receive from the FPSO Kwame Nkrumah.

Speaking to the media at Atuabo in the Western Region yesterday, the Chief Executive Officer of Ghana Gas, Dr George Adja-Sipa Yankey, said efforts were being made to ensure that future maintenance work could be done without necessarily shutting the plant down.

Delays

He said maintenance work, which could usually take only five days to complete, had to delay because of some interconnection works to other new gas users and the connection to the West African Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCo) gas pipelines.

Dr Yankey said Ghana Gas had the expertise and was ready to work to keep the plant running to ensure stable supply of power.

Accordingly, he said, work that hitherto was assigned to third party expatriates was done by the staff of Ghana Gas who were specially trained to handle the project.

Assurance

Dr Yankey assured the nation that the plant was very stable and ready to receive more gas to process to its designed capacity if the current challenge with FPSO Kwame Nkrumah was resolved.

“We are ready and I can assure you that with the Tweneboa, Enyenra, Ntomme (TEN) project on stream now, and after the resumption of the FPSO Kwame Nkrumah, enough will be available to power the plants to meet the domestic needs of the liquefied petroleum gas,” he said.
