A Hitler lookalike has been arrested in Austria on charges of glorifying the Nazi era, local officials say.

The 25-year-old man reportedly calls himself Harald Hitler.

The man, sporting a side parting and a trademark moustache, had been seen having his photograph taken outside the house in Braunau am Inn in which Adolf Hitler was born.

The lookalike had recently moved to the town on the German border, police spokesman David Furtner told the BBC.

Mr Furtner said this was not a joke or a piece of performance art.

“The young man knows exactly what he is doing,” the police spokesman said.

He said the man had also been spotted in Vienna and Graz.

Pictures of the man were published by Austria’s Heute.at news website on Monday.

Glorifying the Nazi era is a crime in Austria.

Last October, the Austrian authorities decided to demolish Hitler’s birthplace house to stop it becoming a focal point for neo-Nazis.

Hitler was born in a rented room on the top floor of the building on 20 April 1889.

During Nazi rule, the house was transformed into a shrine to Hitler as the town drew in a wave of tourists.

But as the Nazis began to lose control in 1944, it was shut.

The Berlin market attack suspect Anis Amri has been shot dead by police in Milan, Italy’s interior minister says.

The man, who opened fire on police who asked him for ID during a routine patrol in the Sesto San Giovanni area in the early hours of Friday morning, was “without a shadow of a doubt” Anis Amri, Marco Minetti said.

One police officer was injured in the shootout.

Germany has been on high alert after the attack which left 49 injured.

Separately, police arrested two people in the German city of Oberhausen on suspicion of planning an attack.

The fingerprints of the dead man match those of the Tunisian, 24, reports in the Italian media say.

German officials have confirmed Anis Amri’s fingerprints were found inside the truck that was used to kill 12 people and wound 49 others in Berlin on Monday evening.

The attack took place at a Christmas market at the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church in the west of the German capital.

According to the Italian news agency Ansa, Anis Amri had travelled by train from France to Turin, and then taken another train to Milan.

One of India’s most influential and colourful politicians, J Jayalalitha, has died at 68.

The chief minister of Tamil Nadu state suffered a heart attack on Sunday night and died at 23:30 local time (18:00 GMT) on Monday, Chennai’s Apollo Hospital said.

Thousands of her supporters had gathered to pray for her recovery.

The former film star served as Tamil Nadu chief minister four times. She had been receiving treatment for months.

Ms Jayalalitha is revered by many but seen by her critics as having created a cult of personality over the years.

There are fears her death could spark unrest given the extreme devotion she inspires among her supporters, many of whom refer to her as “Amma” (mother).

Earlier reports of her death, which were swiftly withdrawn, prompted scuffles between police and her supporters outside the private hospital.

Tributes began to pour in for Ms Jayalalitha as soon as her death was confirmed by Apollo, which had been treating her since 22 September.

Ms Jayalalitha’s party AIADMK – which had earlier lowered the flag to half-mast before hoisting it up once more – also confirmed she had died, tweeting “our beloved leader, the Iron lady of India… Amma, is no more”.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among the first to offer his condolences.

“I will always cherish the innumerable occasions when I had the opportunity to interact with Jayalalithaa ji (honorific). May her soul rest in peace,” he tweeted.

Khushboo Sundar, film actress and Congress party spokesperson, told the BBC: “It’s very painful for me. Despite our political differences, I had respected her. We were hoping against hope, none of us wanted her to lose this battle.

“She was a symbol of strength for women like me. She fought against so many odds to make a name for herself in a male-dominated profession like politics. We have a lost a great politician, and a great champion of women’s rights.”

Donald Trump has vowed to immediately deport 3 million illegal immigrants with criminal records in one of his first acts as President of the United States.

The President-elect said that “we’re getting them out of our country” as he renewed his pledge to build a wall on the border with Mexico.

His comments opened a clear split with Paul Ryan, the Republican House Speaker, who repeatedly refused to endorse Mr Trump during the election campaign.

Mr Ryan said that he wanted to put people’s “minds at ease” and assure them that Mr Trump’s administration will on securing the border instead of building a deportation task force.

Within minutes of his comments CBS released an excerpt from its interview with Mr Trump, however, in which he made clear that the mass deportations will be going ahead.

He said:“What we are going to do is get the people that are criminal and have criminal records, gang members, drug dealers, where a lot of these people, probably two million, it could be even three million, we are getting them out of our country or we are going to incarcerate. But we’re getting them out of our country, they’re here illegally.”

He said that once the border is “secure” immigration officials will make a “determination” about the remaining illegal immigrants in the US, but hinted that they may be allowed to stay.

He said: “After the border is secure and after everything gets normalized, we’re going to make a determination on the people that they’re talking about who are terrific people, they’re terrific people but we are gonna make a determination at that. But before we make that determination…it’s very important, we are going to secure our border.”

Asked whether he plans to build a wall along the US-Mexico border, Mr Trump replied “yes”. He made the commitment after Newt Gingrich, one of his most senior allies, described the wall as a “great campaign device.

He admitted, however, that the wall will in fact have “some fencing”. “For certain areas I would, but certain areas, a wall is more appropriate,” he said. “I’m very good at this, it’s called construction.”

It came after Mr Gingrich told Fox News: “I suspect he is going to dramatically reinforce border control and customs agents and develop appropriate walls and fences which we know work.

“Hungary reduced the number of refugees coming in by 99 per cent in one day simply by building an effective fence and policing it. We know it can be done, countries have done it all over the World.”

The divisions between Mr Trump and Mr Ryan are likely to become one of the key points of tension in the new administration.

Asked about the prospect of mass deportations, Mr Ryan said: “We should put people’s minds at ease, that is not what our focus is. We’re focused on securing the border.

“We’re not focused on, we are not planning on erecting a deportation force. Donald Trump’s not planning on that.”

It came as Mr Trump appeared to mock a series of leading Republicans, including George Bush, who congratulated him on his victory after failing to back him during the campaign.

]]>
President-elect Donald Trump appeared open Friday to compromising on his oft-repeated pledge to repeal and replace Obamacare — citing a conversation with none other than President Barack Obama himself.

But the openness was complicated by a shift in the official positions listed on his website.

The comments, made in an interview with the Wall Street Journal, signal less of a policy shift for Trump than a change from the rhetoric that helped win him the presidency just three days ago and could set up a fight with conservatives.

Trump told the paper he was reconsidering his stance after Thursday’s meeting with Obama, who urged him to protect parts of the law. Trump said he would like to keep the provision forbidding discrimination based on pre-existing conditions and to allow young Americans to remain on their parents’ healthcare plans.

“Either Obamacare will be amended, or repealed and replaced,” he said, acknowledging that it was Obama, who met with Trump in the Oval Office for 90 minutes, who encouraged him to reconsider. “I told him I will look at his suggestions, and out of respect, I will do that.”

Trump reiterated his plan in an interview with CBS’s “60 Minutes” to ensure individuals with pre-existing conditions continue to have coverage.

“Yes, because it happens to be one of the strongest assets,” Trump said.

Trump went on to explain to CBS that he would also try to keep the measure that allows young people to stay on their parents’ insurance plans until age 26.

“We’re going to very much try to keep that. It adds cost but it’s very much something we’re going to try to keep,” Trump said.

When pressed about the time between repealing and replacing Obamacare, Trump assured CBS correspondent Leslie Stahl that the two would happen “simultaneously.”

“It will be just fine. That’s what I do, I do a good job. You know, I know how to do this stuff. We’re going to repeal it and replace it. We’re not going to have, like, a two-day period, and we’re not going to have a two-year period where there’s nothing. It will be repealed and replaced and we’ll know. And it will be great health care for much less money,” Trump said.

But the President-elect did not offer a replacement plan.

Trump also told the Journal that he would bring the country together and that “I want a country that loves each other.” But that grace did not extend to any reflection on his coarse rhetoric.

When asked about whether his language was inappropriate, Trump said: “No. I won.”
Echoes previous statements

Trump’s positions on Friday are not entirely new, as he’s previously voiced support for certain parts of Obamacare as a candidate. But the statement, three days after Americans elected him president, is a fresh sign that he may be willing to distance himself from some of his campaign positioning, such as calling for the immediate repeal and replace of Obamacare.

And it’s a far cry from what Trump uttered during the primary to his boisterous fans at rallies.

“Look at the mess, and look at the corruption,” Trump said at a rally just a day before Election Day in Scranton, Pennsylvania. “Real change begins immediately with the repealing and replacing of the disaster known as Obamacare.”

Trump also told the paper that he would bring the country together and that “I want a country that loves each other.” But that grace did not extend to any reflection on his coarse rhetoric. When asked about whether his language was inappropriate, Trump said: “No. I won.”

But also on Friday, The Washington Post reported that Trump has revised his health care agenda to steer it more in line with Republican Party orthodoxy.

The paper said the presidential transition website has been edited to now include allowing health care workers to not perform acts that would violate their religious or moral beliefs and to “protect innocent human life from conception to natural death.”

The paper also said the website omits Trump’s call to allow Americans to import prescription drugs from other countries where they are sold at lower prices.

Trump has previously voiced support for other provisions of Obamacare.
Universal health care

At CNN’s town hall in February, Trump said he likes the Obamacare mandate that requires every American to be insured. He went even further in a “60 Minutes” interview last year.

“Everybody’s got to be covered. This is an un-Republican thing for me to say,” he told CBS’s Scott Pelley. “I am going to take care of everybody. I don’t care if it costs me votes or not. Everybody’s going to be taken care of much better than they’re taken care of now.”

But in his plan, he says: “Our elected representatives must eliminate the individual mandate. No person should be required to buy insurance unless he or she wants to.”
Pre-existing conditions

At CNN’s GOP debate in February, Trump said he would get rid of Obamacare but maintain the provision that insurers must cover people with pre-existing conditions.

“I want to keep pre-existing conditions. I think we need it. I think it’s a modern age. And I think we have to have it,” he told Dana Bash.

His plan, however, offers no defense of those with pre-existing conditions. Instead, he said Obamacare must be repealed “completely.”
Not letting people ‘die in the streets’

Trump was most emphatic when talking about having the government take care of poor people who are sick.
“You cannot let people die on the street, OK? Now, some people would say, ‘That’s not a very Republican thing to say.’ Every time I say this at a rally … it got a standing ovation,” he said at a CNN town hall in February.

“The problem is that everybody thinks that you people, as Republicans, hate the concept of taking care of people that are really, really sick and are gonna die. We gotta take care of people that can’t take care of themselves.”

On the trail, Trump sketched different ways of accomplishing this. He’s mentioned making deals with hospitals and “concepts of Medicare.”

But in his plan, he only says that no one should slip through the cracks because they can’t afford coverage. While he wants to repeal Obamacare’s Medicaid expansion provision, he says it could be accomplished by reviewing “basic options for Medicaid” and working with states to ensure health care is provided to those who want it.

Australia has unveiled tough new plans to bar any asylum seekers who try to reach the country by boat from ever being able to enter.

The lifetime ban on visas would apply even to those travelling as tourists, for business, or who married an Australian.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said the move would send “the strongest possible signal” to people-smugglers.

The proposed ban is to be put to parliament later this week.

Australia transports asylum seekers who arrive by boat to off-shore processing centres in Nauru and Papua New Guinea’s Manus Island.

Even if found to be genuine refugees, they are already blocked from being resettled in Australia. They can either return home, be resettled on Manus or Nauru, or go to a third country.

‘Battle of will’

The new legislation would apply to all those sent to Nauru and Manus from 19 July 2013, including those who have returned home, and anyone who arrives in the future. Children, however, would be exempt.

“This is a battle of will between the Australian people, represented by its government, and the criminal gangs of people-smugglers,” Mr Turnbull said.

“You should not underestimate the scale of the threat. These people-smugglers are the worst criminals imaginable. They have a multibillion-dollar business. We have to be very determined to say no to their criminal plans.”

He added: “If they seek to bring people to Australia those passengers will never settle in this country.”

The law will directly affect about 3,000 adult refugees being housed on Manus, Nauru or in Australia undergoing medical treatment.

Australia’s Labor opposition says it is yet to decide whether to back the new law.

Australia has been repeatedly criticised for its tough policy on refugees and asylum seekers.

Earlier this month, a report by Amnesty International compared its camp on Nauru to an open-air prison.

Mr Turnbull dismissed the report’s findings as “absolutely false”.

Five people have died after their plane crashed at Malta International Airport.

The small aircraft, a twin-prop Metroliner, crashed around 07:30 (05:30 GMT), shortly after taking off from Luqa airport on a flight to Libya.

The victims’ nationalities have not been released.

Early reports that they were officials from the EU’s border agency have been denied. Frontex said the plane was “not deployed by” them and said “none of their staff were involved”.

Malta International Airport officials released a statement confirming the deaths. The airport is closed “until further notice”.

Eyewitnesses told the Times of Malta that it took off before turning on its side and going “straight down into the ground”.

Video shot from another plane at the airport shows flames and thick black smoke billowing from the site of the crash, next to the runway.

Dozens of patients were taken to other medical facilities in the city.

About 120 firefighters were mobilised to tackle the blaze, which was later brought under control. PM Narendra Modi said he was “anguished” by the fire.

Eyewitnesses and hospital sources said the fire, suspected to have been caused by an electrical short circuit, was first spotted in the ICU of the medicine ward before spreading to the dialysis ward next door.

Most of the victims reportedly died from smoke inhalation.

Firefighters try to douse a fire that broke out in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of SUM hospital in Bhubaneswar, Orissa, India, 17 October 2016.

“The fire left 20 people dead and more than 100 people injured. They have been admitted to various hospitals in Bhubaneswar and the medical college in Cuttack,” the state’s health secretary, Arati Ahuja, told the BBC’s Sandeep Sahu.

Many of the injured are in a critical condition. Earlier reports had put the death toll at 23.

Some frightened patients and hospital employees tried to jump out of the building’s windows but were prevented from doing so by police, reports said

“Deeply anguished by the loss of lives in the hospital fire in Odisha. The tragedy is mind-numbing. My thoughts are with bereaved families,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted.

In 2011, 89 people died in a fire that broke out in a hospital in the eastern city of Kolkata.

The Emir of Dubai has flown £300,000 of emergency supplies toHaiti on his private jet.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum sent 90 tonnes of emergency supplies in his Boeing 747 to the Caribbean island in the wake of Hurricane Matthew.

Around 300,000 Haitians have been forced by the tropical storm to live in temporary shelters after an estimated 1,000 people were killed when it struck the poor country.

Haiti is still reeling from the effects of the 2010 earthquake and an ongoing cholera outbreak which has killed around 10,000 people so far.

According to the Dubai government, the Sheikh’s wife, Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein, personally oversaw the relief mission which included tents, mosquito nets, medical supplies and water purification units.

The United Nations has stated 1.4 million people in Haiti require urgent assistance appealing for $120 million (£98 million) in funds to help the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere.

Princess Haya wrote in an Instagram post: “One image will forever be in mind, when I think of Haiti. I have seen in 2010, the devastation caused, and it was only because I was on an IHC envoy.

“The same cargo plane I came in today. Again today lives have been erased.

“It is all about what the country needs, but to a certain extent, it is also about what is given.”

She praised the humanitarian actions of her husband the emir and the United Allied Emirates despite the wars and fighting currently besieging the Middle East.

The daughter of King Hussein of Jordan, Princess Haya added: “We, as Arabs, should be bankrupt. We fight on every front, and we have our own to feed and shelter.

“But please, if I can just tell you the sense of humility I knew because my country the UAE had given and my people the Jordanians are there fighting.”

At least 25 inmates have been killed in clashes between two rival factions in an overcrowded prison in northern Brazil, local media report.

Seven of the dead were beheaded and six others burned to death, a police official reportedly said.

The incident in Boa Vista, the capital of Roraima state, happened during visiting hours.

Some 100 visitors who were taken as hostages have been freed and the riot has ended, the reports added.

The state government said it was waiting for a prisoner count to confirm the death toll.

The violence started when inmates broke into another section of the prison where members of a different faction were being held, Capt Falkner Ferreira was quoted as saying by G1 website (in Portuguese).

The prisoners were armed with knives and wooden sticks, a witness said.

Reports say there are 1,400 inmates currently in the prison, which has a capacity of up to 740.

Brazil has the world’s fourth largest prison population, with some 600,000 inmates.

Correspondents say that many poorly resourced and overcrowded jails across the country are in effect run by powerful crime gangs.
