Ghanaian-German Hollywood actor, Boris Ofuatey Kodjoe and his wife Nicole, paid a courtesy visit to FOCOS Orthopaedic Hospital, on Sunday, January 7, 2018, to acquaint themselves with the facility as well as spend time with children undergoing complex spine treatments at the facility.

The couple, who were moved by the Founder, CEO and President, Prof. Oheneba Boachie-Adjei’s vision to establish an ultra-modern facility that serves people with complex spine conditions especially children, have been involved over the past few years in work of the hospital’s mother Foundation in the US (FOCOS USA). Boris and Nicole, who have been in Ghana for the past week, used the opportunity to get a first-hand experience on the hospital’s operations by interacting with some members of Management, staff and paeditric patients at the hospital.

At the hospital, they were received by the Founder together with some members of the Management staff.  Prof Oheneba Boachie-Adjei recounted the story of how he conceived the vision of the hospital and the impact the hospital has made since its inception.

“Currently FOCOS sees patients from about 25 countries across the globe with several complex spine and general Orthopaedic conditions,” Prof. Boachie-Adjei said. He added that the rareness of Specialist facilities like FOCOS and the inability of National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) to cover orthopaedic healthcare has been a challenge to many children who require urgent attention. The Director of Medical Services at FOCOS Orthopaedic Hospital, Dr. Gerhard Ofori-Amankwah gave the couple a guided tour of the facility.

Boris and Nicole also gave an account of how they became involved with the work FOCOS as well as their impression after. “I am very impressed at the amazing and comprehensive care being given to especially children who might have fallen through the cracks, had it not been for a hospital like FOCOS,” Boris said. He was also impressed by the level of technology used at the hospital and compared FOCOS to other facilities in the US. His wife Nicole was also impressed at the level of expertise the hospital had at its disposal. “I have seen many specialists in different parts of the world and I must say it’s surprising to see specialists of great stature like the ones at FOCOS.

Boris Kodjoe hosted the 2018 edition of the CAF Awards held at the Accra International Conference Centre on Thursday, January 4. Located in the Pantang area of Accra, FOCOS Orthopaedic Hospital is a 70-bed Specialist Orthopaedic Hospital, and is noted for the treatment of complex spine and joint diseases like Scoliosis, Kyphosis as well as other degenerative and deformative Orthopaedic conditions.

It has facilities such as a state-of-the-art Surgical Theatre, Radiology, Laboratory, Pharmacy and Physiotherapy departments

Founder and CEO of FOCOS Orthopaedic Hospital, Prof Oheneba Boachie-Adjei said “Orthopaedic surgery which involves operation on the musculoskeletal system, costs about $10,000 in Ghana compared to about $100,000 and though health insurance did not cover Orthopaedic healthcare delivery it was his wish that the government would pay at least 10% for Ghanaians in future.”

He was worried about the lack of advocacy for Orthopaedic healthcare in Ghana considering it being the fourth cause of death and disability in the world according to the WHO.

FOCOS Orthopaedic Hospital over the weekend officially commissioned its CT scanner for diagnostic services at their facility in Pantang, Accra.

The equipment which is a 16-slice Phillips Brilliance CT, was donated to the hospital by the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) in New York, USA and offers the general public an opportunity to have scans of their head, abdomen, spine, pelvic and full body.  It gives detailed pictures of bones and soft tissues which an ordinary X-ray test cannot show, such as muscles, organs, large blood vessels, the brain and nerves.

“FOCOS Hospital is committed to providing quality orthopaedic healthcare delivery in Africa and the CT scanner and diagnostic services add another feather to our cap,” said Leticia Osei-Poku, Chief Administrative Officer at FOCOS Hospital. She also stressed on the hours of service. “We have professional Radiographers who are available to assist anyone interested in this service from Monday to Friday between 8am and 5pm,” she added.

The Director of Medical Services, Dr. Gerhard Ofori-Amankwah said, “We are grateful to the Hospital for Special Surgery for this donation, patients will no longer have to go outside the hospital for CT scans and this will help Surgeons get more detailed images of bones, spine and joints”.

Patrons can have access to all images in 360° 3D images on CD (Hard copies are optional). The CT scan services will give Surgeons clearer pictures prior to their surgical procedures. Doctors will also find the right place to take tissue samples from patients with this service. The most commonly performed CT scan globally is of the brain – to determine the cause of a stroke, or to assess serious head injuries.

FOCOS Hospital is one of the few specialist orthopaedic hospitals in Africa that specializes in Complex Spine Deformities, Club foot, Joint Replacement and other degenerative spine illnesses. With some of the best medical practitioners in the world, the hospital also runs a Diet and Nutrition, Physiotherapy, Laboratory services as well as a registered Community Pharmacy.

The 50-bed Specialist hospital has been granted full accreditation by the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons (GCPS) and the West Africa College of Surgeons, to run a residency program in Anaesthesia beginning with the 2016/2017 academic year.
