“I did not write this book with the sole aim of making money. It’s an effort to make a little contribution as to how we can solve the general problem of how to bring about transformation in our society. A former Deputy Finance Minister under the previous National Democratic Congress (NDC) government, Fifi Kwetey, has said that President Akufo-Addo is unaware of the realities existing in some sectors of the economy; for which reason he is creating the impression that the difficulties can be easily resolved.

He said Akufo-Addo’s comments during the State of the Nation Address suggests that, some of the difficulties pertaining in the country were intentionally created by previous government.

Speaking on Eyewitness News, Fifi Kwetey said, the expenditures of the NDC said to be reckless by the NPP government, were to improve ailing aspects of the economy.

“If you play to the gallery, you create the impression that it is easy to remove energy sector levy in order to make electricity affordable to the people of Ghana when you don’t even know what the realities as far as the energy sector is concerned… and you make it look like it is the creation of the NDC..”

“Irresponsible statements that do not tell the truth to the people, and make the people believe that you can continue subsidizing utilities and fuel when the truth is that, that subsidy is only going to create further difficulties for the same people,” Fifi Kwetey said.

“That is why we [NDC] removed the subsidies and introduced the energy sector levies to general resources to retire those. These are the same people who without knowing the realities went on campaign platform to say they will remove this and that. Now they are in power; and it seems the reality is now hitting them,” he added.

President Akufo-Addo while presenting his maiden State of the Nation Address before Parliament on Tuesday, suggested that the NDC had plunged the country into economic difficulties.

He noted that, the NDC government had supervised an unprecedented increase in the country’s debt stock from GHs9.5 billion to GHs122 billion.

He also revealed that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government, over spent its budget by some GH¢7 billion, and failed to meet almost all of its targets under the International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme.

But according to the Member of Parliament for Ketu South, the budget overrun was on account of the single spine. He said there were legitimate reasons for the overruns, and therefore the NDC government cannot be accused of mismanagement.

Fifi Kwetey cited a shortfall in grants, and issues regarding the payment of corporate tax in oil sector as factors that accounted for the budget overrun.

He further said that, in spite of Akufo-Addo’s gloomy picture of the economy, the country had made significant gains under the John Mahama-led government as other indicators showed a reduction in inflation, stability in the cedi, and a growth perspective of the country.

He accused the NPP of leaving the country in a more dire situation in 2009, saying the NDC in spite of that managed to ensure growth for the economy.

He also advised President Akufo-Addo to “stop the lamentation and address the situation as he has promised to deal with”.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC), has described the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), as desperate and delusional, following the launch of its manifesto geared towards addressing the problems of unemployment.

The NDC at its “Setting the Records Straight” series, addressed by the Transport Minister, Fifi Kwetey, held that the NPP is only joking and deceiving Ghanaians on the matter job creation considering their record in the past.

According to Mr. Kwetey, the NPP is “a party that obviously believes that when you want power just tell the people anything. Anything at all just tell them.”

As an example, he said “the NPP in the year 2000 promised to create jobs for all persons able and willing to work… that is NPP for you. They will say anything for power.”

He said the NPP instead presided over “the collapse of the local poultry sector, the collapse of the local fishing sector, the local rice production sector etc,” the Transport Minster stated.

Mr. Kwetey accused the then NPP government of contriving, “to take money out of statutory funds like the District Assembly Common funds in order to set up the National Youth Employment Programme… that was their way of throwing dust in the faces of our young people.”

“The same NPP that blatantly deceived Ghana about jobs for all and failed abysmally is today waxing bold and making claims to having the key to the problem of unemployment facing Ghana.”

Musician Rex Omar was present at the address

“One sometimes wonders if the NPP’s real problem is deception, or delusion or desperation or maybe all three combined. Whatever it is, any of these three Ds only spells doom for Ghana. Ghana is a serious country and this joking with the NPP by the people of Ghana must stop.”

A young entrepreneur and journalist, has audaciously vowed to snatch the Ketu South seat from the incumbent Fifi Kwetey, after picking nomination forms to contest as an independent candidate.

The Ketu South Constituency is a stronghold of the ruling NDC and one of the major determinants of the party’s chances of victory in the general elections.

For instance, President John Dramani Mahama garnered about 81,880 votes(93.15% of total vote cast), and about 77,837 people voted for the incumbent MP, Fifi Kwetey in the 2012 elections.

There have been reports of apathy in the constituency following the disqualification of a business man, Jim Yao Morti during the NDC’s primary. The man had some followers from the Some Traditional Area in the Constituency. The former MP, Albert Zigah, also staged a comeback during the primary.

This, keen watchers of the race say might affect the party’s fortunes particularly in the Some Traditional Area.

Rustum Gameli Senorgbe told Citi News yesterday after picking his nomination forms at the Electoral Commission’s Office at Tokor, that he is leaving no stone unturned to unseat the incumbent NDC MP and Transport Minister Fifi Kwetey.

Rustum Gameli Senorgbe is a journalist with Volta Premier FM, a campus radio station at Ho Polytechnic, and a Marketing Executive. He holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Business Administration and hails from Agbozume in the Some Traditional Area.

The young journalist, who connects with the youth promised a landslide victory to unseat the incumbent MP.

He promised to set up a business incubator to nurture business modules and provide jobs for the unemployed youth in the area when elected.

“I would initiate mentoring activities for graduates and add value to the Kente Business in the area and ensure the West Africa protocol on free movement of our people to trade in Togo is adhered to”

He added that, Ketu South constituency needs a young, proactive and innovative leader to bring the needed development to the area.

The Minister of Transport, Fifi Kwetey, has rejected claims that his party copied some policy ideas espoused by the flagbearer of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akufo-Addo in its manifesto.

President John Mahama presented the highlights of the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) manifesto on Tuesday.

Critics have said some of the promises and plans in the NDC  manifesto are similar to those proposed by Akufo-Addo especially his plan for the  provision of some social amenities.

Akufo-Addo had promised to create factories for each of the 216 districts and give all the 275 constituencies GHc1 million each to undertake developmental projects.

However, President Mahama on Tuesday also promised among other things to provide each pupil a tablet as well as build central markets in each district.

He also promised every district a compacting and shredding machine for plastic waste treatment.

Some Ghanaians on social media said Mahama’s promises were not different from Nana Akufo-Addo’s, but speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show, Fifi Kwetey, who is also the Member of Parliament for the Ketu South constituency denied the claims.

“You notice for example we are already trying to give every community that hasn’t got access to secondary school a community day secondary school, that is already on, you will notice that we’ve already made a lot of efforts to increase the text book availability to our children. These are things that already have been happening; it has nothing to do with this newly discovered desire of the NPP to bamboozle people by just mentioning anything that comes to mind,” he argued.

Akufo-Addo’s promise only to deceive Ghanaians

Fifi Kwetey also claimed that Akufo-Addo’s promises are only to deceive the public to vote for them.

“For them [NPP] invariably, they say it because they believe that the ordinary people cannot see through and that they can deceive Ghanaians and come to power. That is exactly the symptoms that is happening now, with one this one that, it’s just basically following the same tradition of trying to deceive people promising anything hoping that once you have access to power you can do whatever you want to do.”

We won’t steal manifesto ideas from losers

Both parties, the NDC and NPP, have accused each other of plagiarizing manifesto ideas with the NPP claiming that the NDC is likely to steal its ideas.

But General Secretary of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketia refuted the claim.

“I have heard so many people say that NDC is waiting for NPP before we release our manifesto. We don’t learn from losers. We set the pace. I repeat NDC does not learn from losers. We rather set the pace for them to copy”.
