Telecom operators are lamenting over the constant fiber cuts and power outage which they say is their biggest setback in the industry.

According to the Telecom operators, although they are working to find a solution to the situation, they have so far been quite unsuccessful.

Chief Commercial Officer of Tigo Ghana, Tara Squire in an interview with Citi Business News said the situation is worrisome.

“The things that affect our network today are things like fiber cuts and power outage. Now fiber cuts have heightened today because road construction has equally increased at an alarming rate and we are working with government agencies to get to the point where we get this minimized.”

“In other parts of the world if you cut any infrastructure like telecommunications during road construction, you get fined heavily because before Fiber is laid, we pay to a government agency what is called “right of way”, he stressed.

Mr. Squire further lamented the huge impact of the situation on telecommunication companies in the country.

This would however not be the first time Tigo Ghana has faced such Fiber cut issues. in 2014, Tigo Ghana embarked on an overhead fiber project in some parts of the country to ensure that subscribers get a reliable network service without interruption.

The Western and Ashanti regions then were the places that saw most Fiber cuts which troubled the Telco’s connectivity. it was however mainly due to the construction of roads and illegal mining in those areas.

The situation has however not changed much as fiber cuts seems to still be the their biggest challenge in their business.

He however called on government to step in and deal with the numerous fiber cuts which often halt business activities.

“We the telecom operators are the ones who bear the brunt if consumers experience any cuts in service connection since they are oblivious that a contractor who is building a road somewhere has cut the fiber. We basically have to send engineers to go and find the cut and fix it. It doesn’t matter where it is in this country but it is something that happens much often,” Tara Squire remarked.
