Following a number of requests from listeners, the Effective Living Series has been extended to the end of January.

The first of the final three sessions, on today’s edition of the Citi Breakfast Show, featured a discussion on “fighting until you win” in whatever situation or opportunity life presents to you.

Business turnaround specialist, management consultant and author, Caleb Ayiku brought an insightful angle on making the best of any situation while ensuring that negative attributes which limited a person’s potential are discontinued.

“The first thing to look at when fighting until you win is potential. Every human has potential but it is essential to know that in as much as you have potential, there are predators designed to prey on your potential. It is up to you to be able to beat your particular predator and win,” he said.

Mr. Ayiku noted eight things that limit a person’s potential and stated that it is important that one commits to halting such behaviours in order to maximise their potential.

These eight things, according to him are:

  1. Procrastination
  2. Dissipation of time
  3. Love for pleasure
  4. Addiction
  5. Damaging emotion
  6. Inertia due to failure
  7. Isolation
  8. Self-indiscipline

Mr. Ayiku stated that fighting procrastination is the first step to win adding that “procrastination is simply the tendency to put off actions”.

He said that there are three key pointers to fighting procrastination; spending time alone to plan the action you have to take, setting fewer goals and asking yourself this particular question: ‘If I had time to do just one thing today or one thing this week what one thing should I do?’

The second battle to win Mr Ayiku noted was the ‘Dissipation of time’.

“Time is more precious than money and that is why you must not waste it,” he said.

According to the Ayiku, “time utilization will always make the differences between success and failure,”

He advised that everyone must have simple a time structure in which they create ample time for personal reflection and prayer, for proper nutrition for your body, for building meaningful relationships and for rest.

“These four things will influence your potential more than you can imagine,” he said.

Love for pleasure is something everyone falls victim to, Caleb Ayiku noted, stating that if some of our guilty pleasures are not pursued with caution, they will limit our potential.

“Any uncontrolled urge can totally derail your goals, you’ll lose sight of what is most important,” he said.

Addiction, he said, has taken away great people and stifled their future and career; including the likes of Kiki Gyan, Whitney Huston, Michael Jackson, and many others.

He noted that addiction cannot be fought alone and it is important that you talk to someone about it or get professional help.

Mr. Ayiku out pointed out that damaging emotions like anger, anxiety fear, discouragement, rejection and hatred, if unchecked, can do a lot of damage to your potential of winning.

According to him, all these unhealthy emotions can rob a person of their health, joy and optimism, inertia and energy.

Caleb Ayiku moved on to inertia brought about by failure has locked a lot a people in their misery and “if you don’t make a conscious effort to break free from the inertia due to failure you will never realise your potential and bring your dreams to life.”

“Many people get immobilized, by a failure, by a past incident that did not go too well, but you have to be shaken and get going,” he added.

The next battle is against isolation and no matter how great your potentials are, you cannot achieve them alone, the consultant said.

“There are very few great things that can be done by one person, many great things require a team effort, and many great things require that you team up with somebody to do something to pursue a dream, so what team are you on?” he queried.

Mr. Ayiku concluded by stating that indiscipline kills a lot of great potentials but indiscipline can be curbed if you make a personal commitment to your time, relationships and your resources.

“If you do not put in place the measures, to make sure that you are disciplined in the use of your times, in the people you relate with, and with your resources, 2018 will pass you by and you would not have achieved what you want to achieve,” he said.

The curtains came down on Citi FM’s 2018 edition of the Effective Living Series on Thursday, January 25, with a session on values; what they are and the right kind of values to inculcate in oneself.

Rev. Bernard Ade-Acquah of Powerhouse Ministries International, took listeners through the challenging journey of understanding what values are, making it a priority and inculcating it.

He defined values as “intangible attributes that you consider important in influencing your choices and actions, and which eventually create the environment of building a society.”

According to him, values are some of the most important things in one’s area of work and family.

He stated that, values help a person choose between competing interests, adding that what drives a person’s daily actions will be determined by what they value the most.

Rev. Ade-Acquah also advised that, it was important not to make decisions based on one’s feelings, but rather one’s values.

He noted that, values are not taught in schools, but rather at home by one’s family.

“Values come from the essence of life,” he said.

According to him, values differ in every home, but the very common ones you will find in every home include respect, honesty, kindness, courage, perseverance and dependability.

He also noted that, a person’s value is distorted when they put themselves first in their daily dealings.

According to him, integrity and truth are the core foundation of values which should be enforced, adding that a solid family should be built on those core values.

Respect as a value in practice must involve “acknowledging people who are more senior to you, people who were there before you, and who have done something you are benefiting from,” Ade-Acquah said.

Excellence is also a value which involves improving on yourself and wanting more for yourself in a way that elevates your current situation to a better one, the reverend added.

“Excellence is an innate value for you to want better things for yourself, so I want an improvement in my life, I want to add value to what I am doing,” he said.

Prioritizing values create sanitized environments and develop a nation, he noted.

The second day of the last week of Effective Living Series with John Kpikpi gives a deep insight into the family.

The discussion started off with the foundation of the family, which is marriage.

In his submission on the Citi Breakfast Show, he took his time to delve into what marriage is, because according to him, you cannot have a happy home and family without a happy marriage.

“A husband and wife are the physical infrastructure of a marriage. If the two partners involved are not functioning well together, there is a great chance of not getting a good home”.

According to Kpikpi, every marriage is like building a house which requires a blueprint for starting the process.

“Settle the issues before you get started. I believe every marriage is like building a house, and there is a plan for building it. Unfortunately, most people start without finding out this plan”.

He noted that the mistake most couples make is having their own individual plans of what the marriage should be.

This, he said, can be detrimental to a marriage because of the likelihood of the opposing plans or vision of both couples.

He advised a man and a woman who want to settle, to try and understand marriage from God’s perspective to make marriage work.

The first and foremost thing in the blueprint of a marriage, is understanding that marriage is  about companionship “Which means they are close together, they share their lives, they support each other, they share the food or bread together,” he said.

The second thing in the blueprint of marriage from God’s perspective, is that a man and his wife will become one in the flesh, to look like and function like one unit.

“God wants every marriage on earth to have his creative ‘one flesh’”

The next thing he spoke about is choosing the right person. According to him, the person you have met is the one ordained for you.

To be able to find the right person, you need to open your eyes in God’s way or in a godly manner to what you want.

You need to work on yourself first to able to find the right someone for you. Look for deeper inner character, like faithfulness.

Faithfulness should be something you must find in the right person for you to spend the rest of your life with.

His last submission on the description of a happy home is whether or not your home is a safe haven for you, a place you are eager to go after a hustle and tussle with the world, a place where you and your partner work together as a team, and place where there is peace. If you are able to be true to yourself in the answers to what has been mentioned, then you have happy home and a family.
