British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran was named the world’s best-selling artist of 2017 on Monday, thanks to his album“Divide” and singles“Shape of You” and“Perfect.”

The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) said that“Divide,” which was released in March 2017, went multi-Platinum in 36 nations.

Sheeran’s pop ballad“Shape of You” was also the best-selling single globally of 2017 and has been certified as multi-Platinum in 32 nations, the organization said.

The IFPI said it was the first time that a recording artist has had both the best-selling album and single of the year.

Sheeran, 27, first found success in England in 2009 and 2010 by self-releasing his music online.

“Ed is truly an incredible songwriter, vocalist and performer, whose ability to tell stories and make people feel is what stands him out from the crowd,” Max Lousada, chief executive of recorded music for Sheeran’s Warner Music Group record label, said in a statement on Monday.

Sheeran, known for his ginger hair and shy demeanor, delighted fans last month by announcing his engagement to his childhood friend Cherry Seaborn, who he has known since he was 11 years old.

Canadian rapper Drake and his album“More Life” was named the second biggest seller globally for 2017 and the IFPI said Taylor Swift’s“Reputation” was third, despite being released only in November 2017.

Countless newlyweds have chosen Ed Sheeran’s ballad, “Thinking Out Loud,” to play during their first dance. Now, the British singer-songwriter gets to decide if he wants it played at his own wedding.

Sheeran, 26, announced Saturday morning that he and his longtime girlfriend, Cherry Seaborn, are engaged.

“Got myself a fiancé just before new year,” Sheeran wrote on Instagram. “We are very happy and in love, and our cats are chuffed as well xx.”

Sheeran told People Magazine last year that he’s known Seaborn since they were children but they didn’t start dating until he invited her to Taylor Swift’s Fourth of July party in 2015.
Sheeran’s engagement comes after a roller-coaster year.

His album “÷” (“Divide”) was the most popular album on streaming services for 2017, according to Nielsen data.

But many fans didn’t love his appearance on the popular TV drama, “Game of Thrones,” prompting him to temporarily delete his Twitter account amid the scorn.

Pop star Ed Sheeran has broken his right arm, putting his upcoming tour dates in jeopardy.

“I’ve had a bit of a bicycle accident,” wrote the star on his Instagram page, posting a picture of his arm in a cast.

“I’m currently waiting on some medical advice, which may affect some of my upcoming shows. Please stay tuned for further news.”

The 26-year-old was on a break from his world tour, but was due to resume with a gig in Taipei next week.

Ed Sheeran's arm

He has a further 14 dates scheduled this year, including concerts in Japan, South Korea and Thailand, before kicking off the Australian leg of his tour in March 2018.

The tour is in support of his multi million-selling third album Divide, which was released earlier this year.

  • Ed Sheeran quits Twitter over abuse
  • Ed Sheeran burned his foot in a volcano
  • Ed Sheeran closes Glastonbury 2017

Sheeran famously plays his concerts solo – using just a guitar and a loop pedal to layer up songs like Thinking Out Loud, Sing and Shape of You.

Losing the use of his right arm would make such a set-up impractical – but, speaking to BBC News earlier this year, Sheeran said he would never consider playing with a backing band.

“I don’t feel like there’s anything interesting or new about seeing a singer-songwriter with a band behind them,” he said.

“I don’t feel like if I suddenly got a band, everyone would go, ‘Wow!’. I actually feel it’d take away from me.”

Rapper Kendrick Lamar has taken six prizes at the MTV Video Music Awards in Los Angeles.

He won best video of the year for Humble, as well as best hip-hop artist, after opening the awards ceremony with a live performance.

Ed Sheeran – who won artist of the year – was live on stage with rapper Lil Uzi Vert, but Taylor Swift was a no-show.

Fans had to be content with the premiere of her new video Look What You Made Me Do.

The video shows the 27-year-old singer emerging from a tomb and declaring her old selves dead.

Within an hour, nearly 500,000 people had watched the video on YouTube.

Swift won one VMA award – for best collaboration for I Don’t Wanna Live Forever, with Zayn Malik.

The show was hosted by Katy Perry, who wrapped up the evening by performing her single Swish Swish with Nicki Minaj.

Ed Sheeran says he’s quit Twitter after receiving a stream of abuse.

“I’ve actually come off Twitter completely,” he told The Sun. “I can’t read it.

“I go on it and there’s nothing but people saying mean things. One comment ruins your day. But that’s why I’ve come off it.”

The star, who has 19 million followers, says he’ll keep the account open, but it will only share automatic updates from his Instagram page from now on.

A quick scan of Twitter finds a number of negative – although not necessarily abusive – comments directed towards the 26-year-old.

“Irritating ginger busker” is a particularly common insult; while the song Galway Girl has provoked a torrent of anger.

Ed Sheeran Twitter insults

“Revolting, fudged cultural appropriation,” wrote David N about the jaunty jig, in which Sheeran describes falling for a girl who “played the fiddle in an Irish band”.

Another user described it as “awful ‘diddly-eye leprachaun'” music, full of “stereotypical nonsense”.

Richard Roche had some helpful advice regarding the lyrics, which he described as: “Full of geographical inaccuracies (there’s no pub on Grafton St).”

Most recently, Sheeran had to defend himself against accusations of using a backing track during his headline set at Glastonbury.

The star uses a loop pedal during his performances, which allows him to record his vocal and guitar lines, creating a layered, looped accompaniment live, on the spot.

“Is it a backing track or invisible musicians?!? Who’s playing when Ed Sheeran stops?!?” wrote one mystified fan. “Couldn’t he get real musicians? I like him but all a bit karaoke,” wrote another.

In his last personally-authored tweet, the star sounded exasperated by the accusations.

“Never thought I’d have to explain it, but everything I do in my live show is live, it’s a loop station, not a backing track. Please google,” he wrote.

Other users took aim at Sheeran’s televised Glastonbury show after he suffered guitar problems during the song Bloodstream.

“Ed Sheeran come to my house and I will show you how to tune a guitar you useless mess,” wrote one.

Speaking to The Sun, Sheeran said he had “been trying to work out why people dislike me so much” but the simple answer is that he’s the victim of his own success.

His third album ÷ (Divide) is the year’s biggest-seller, dominating the charts and radio around the world. In the UK, every song on the record made the top 20 of the singles chart, while the lead single, Shape Of You, spent 14 weeks at number one.

That sort of ubiquity draws out the more mean-spirited and aggressive users of Twitter – which has gained a reputation for harbouring trolls.

Stars including Miley Cyrus, Sue Perkins, Stephen Fry, Halsey and Avengers director Joss Whedon have all quit the site after suffering abuse.

Others, including Selena Gomez and Tom Daley, have received death threats. (We saw no evidence of similar tweets to Sheeran, although it is possible such messages would have been deleted for violating Twitter’s terms and conditions).

Last year, Bloomberg reported that Disney chose not to pursue an acquisition of the social media network in part because it thought the bullying behaviour of some users might damage the film company’s image.

Twitter has since taken action to combat abuse – giving users better tools to mute or block trolls.

Halsey, Sue Perkins and Miley Cyrus

Based upon a trawl of Sheeran’s account, mean tweets are vastly outweighed by positive ones.

Every time he posts a photo or a comment, the majority of responses are variations of, “I love you”, “te amo” and “come to Portugal!”

And if Sheeran ventures back onto the site, he’ll find heartwarming messages like this one from Castie Collins, who wrote: “I’m learning guitar because of you.”

“Thank u @edsheeran for making great music so studying isn’t always SO terrible,” said Emily Estopare.

Hannah Robinson added: “I’m sick and feel like crap but I turned on some Ed Sheeran songs and felt better.”

And Karen Porter had kind words for Sheeran’s Glastonbury slot: “Could tell you were having the best time ever up on that stage,” she said. “Amazing to see true talent and a genuine soul. Much love.”

Even the star’s least-liked song received some (faint) praise from Sadie Lyon, who wrote: “My Uber driver knows the rap bit in Galway Girl.”

Pop star Ed Sheeran has headlined Glastonbury’s Pyramid Stage, just six years after his debut at one of the festival’s smallest venues.

In 2011, the star played the solar-powered Croissant Neuf stage, playing “to about 500 people”.

On Sunday, he closed the festival, attracting a much younger audience than Friday and Saturday’s headliners, Radiohead and Foo Fighters.

The 26-year-old admitted he was “very nervous but very excited” to be there.

“For those of you who haven’t seen one of my shows before or haven’t heard one of my songs, please pretend that you know them,” he told the audience.

“For those of you who have, please sing all of the words.”

Ed Sheeran

“The aim of tonight is to lose our voices,” he added. “I’m going to lose mine as well.”

The audience took him up on the challenge; joining in wistfully as he sang the ballads Photograph and Thinking Out Loud.

They didn’t quite keep up, however, with the spittle-flecked Take It Back – a whirlwind of wordplay in which Sheeran declared: “I’m not a rapper, I’m a singer with a flow.”

The star played, as he usually does, without a band; using a loop pedal to layer his vocal and guitar lines and create a backing track live, on the spot.

This created problems during Bloodstream when his guitar slipped out of tune but, for the most part, the sound was impressive: Sheeran can build up or break down a song at will, a skill honed by years of relentless gigging in his teens.

Ed Sheeran's audience

Highlights included The A-Team, which he sang illuminated by the audience, who held their phones aloft, creating the impression of 80,000 fireflies bobbing around the fields of Worthy Farm.

Sheeran also invited traditional Irish band Beoga on stage to accompany him on Nancy Mulligan, a song about his paternal grandmother.

It was a moment that reeked of cheese but, watched from the side of the stage by his grandfather, Sheeran made it seem genuine.

This is the secret to his appeal. His brand of pop can be innocuous and twee – but Sheeran sells it with an earnest, everyman shtick that demolishes the divide between artist and audience.

However you respond to his music, it is clear he strikes a chord, especially with the YouTube generation who prioritise relatability over the preening mannerisms of, say, Mick Jagger.

Sheeran exploits it effortlessly. On headlining Glastonbury, he told the crowd: “I’d like to say it was a dream of mine, but I never thought I’d get to the point where I was playing this stage, let alone headlining it.”

Ed Sheeran

And to Glastonbury itself, Sheeran’s appeal to under-30s is paramount: those are the fans the festival needs to replenish its audience and survive.

That’s why this year saw more pop and grime acts than ever, from Charli XCX to Katy Perry; from Wiley to Stormzy.

Killer surprise

On Sunday, the festival also saw sets from Royal Blood, Courteeners, Foo Fighters, The Jacksons, Radiohead and The Killers – who played a secret show on the John Peel stage on Sunday evening.

“They say you play the John Peel Stage twice in your career – once on the way up, and once on the way down,” said frontman Brandon Flowers.

“It’s great to be back.”

Earlier in the day, the Pyramid Stage briefly turned into Studio 54, with consecutive sets from Bee Gee Barry Gibb and funk band Chic drawing one of the biggest crowds of the weekend.

And LA band Haim literally brought the audience at The Other Stage to its knees.

The band, who were debuting songs from their new album, Something To Tell You, encouraged the crowd to dance lower and lower towards the ground until, eventually, they were lying down on the grass.

“All I wanted was a dance party,” bassist Este Haim told the BBC afterwards, “and then Glastonbury danced with me. We tangoed.”

Sunday also saw sets from Shaggy, Emeli Sande, London Grammar and Biffy Clyro, who threw down the gauntlet to Sheeran with a ferocious volley of rock riffs on the Pyramid Stage.

There is no Glastonbury in 2018, meaning that there are 731 days until Worthy Farm opens its gates again.

The cows will be pleased.

He’s all over the singles chart and now he’s all over the wall at the National Portrait Gallery.

The museum in London has acquired a new portrait of Ed Sheeran, painted by Belfast-based artist Colin Davidson.

It’s Ed’s first ever painted portrait and measures four feet square – so just a little taller than Ed is (sorry Ed, joke mate).

Ed sat for the artist at his home in Suffolk in 2015 for three hours, during which Davidson made twenty drawings from life and took reference photographs.

Colin Davidson said: ‘When painting a portrait I am looking for the moment when the person is almost unaware of me being there and I feel I got it with Ed.

“I deliberately didn’t want Ed to perform and that was odd for him.

“But there is a youthful aspect to the portrait but also something experienced beyond his years.”

We hope Ed Sheeran’s campfire building skills are up to scratch, as he’s just been announced as the next Desert Island Discs castaway.

The singer will guest on the long-running BBC Radio 4 programme when it returns for its new series next month.

Sheeran has already recorded his appearance, which will air on Sunday 7 May, with presenter Kirsty Young.

He will choose the eight pieces of music he would most want to have with him if he was stranded on an island.

Sheeran has been going from strength to strength this year, with his latest album Divide topping the charts and its lead single Shape of You enjoying a 13-week reign at number one.

Desert Island Discs has been running for 75 years – an anniversary it celebrated in January with an appearance from David Beckham.

Ed Sheeran is to headline the Pyramid Stage at this year’s Glastonbury Festival, topping the bill alongside Radiohead and Foo Fighters.

The chart-dominating pop star will close the event on Sunday, 25 June, in his only festival appearance this year.

On a short Instagram film, he described the news as “awesome”, ending speculation about 2017’s headliners.

The full line-up will be announced at a later date. Tickets for the festival, in Somerset, have already sold out.

Ed Sheeran at Glastonbury 2011

Sheeran first played Glastonbury in 2011, appearing on the BBC Introducing stage before his debut album – +, or Plus – had ever been released.

He returned for a slot on the Pyramid Stage in 2014, memorably leading the audience in a mass sing-along to his smash hit Sing.

He returns to Worthy Farm as one of the world’s biggest pop stars, having sold four million copies of his third album, Divide, in the last 10 days.

The star also dominates the singles chart, with all 16 of the tracks on his album residing in the Top 20.

Ed Sheeran at Glastonbury 2014

Radiohead are the Friday night headliners, making their first UK festival appearance since 2011.

Foo Fighters take the Saturday night slot, making up for 2015 when they were forced to cancel.

A handful of other acts have confirmed themselves for the festival – including Laura Marling and London Grammar.

Lady Gaga is also rumoured to be playing, after being spotted backstage last year.

The festival bill is usually announced in early April, once fans have paid the remaining balance on their tickets.

Organiser recently revealed that “twice as many bands” had been booked for this year’s event, which runs from 21 to 25 June at Worthy Farm in Somerset.
