The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), has issued a 1-week ultimatum to illegal settlers at Mempeasem, a suburb of East Legon in Accra, to leave the area or face demolition.

The Assembly says it has identified about 500 settlers in the area. Some of the settlers were managing piggeries and have illegally allocated to themselves portions of land.

According to the AMA, their actions have given rise to criminal activities in the area.

The AMA Coordinating Director, Sam Ayeh-Datey, made this known when the Assembly conducted an assessment in the area as part of efforts to make Accra a clean City under the National Sanitation Day programme on Saturday.

He said the ultimatum to the illegal settlers followed persistence public complaints about stray pigs within the East Legon community, which they said posed health challenges.

The Coordinating Director said the situation did not promote a healthy relationship between the city authorities and the residents in such a first class residential area.

Originally delineated as an ambassadorial area by the AMA, East Legon fast attracted the elite in the 1970’s.

It remains one of the most expensive places to own a property with a plot of land going for between GhC1million to GHc 2million.

The luxurious life of the rich here however contrasts sharply with the likes of Ernestina, a 30-year-old mother of two who lives in a kiosk with her husband, Cece a boiled rice seller who will give anything to have decent sanitation and access to potable water and Hector an Ivorian footballer who has moved to Ghana with nothing more than hope and talent.

In this feature for Citi News’ series on the Urban Poor, Caleb Kudah, Duke Mensah Opoku and Lallah Maigah profiled the inequality index of this prime area.

Police have arrested two young men who robbed an Israeli business man at East Legon last Friday.

The two are, Sanusi Zido, 18, and Abudu Mohammed, 27. Their arrest was effected after a taxi driver knocked them off their motorbike in an attempt to escape.

[contextly_sidebar id=”NhjiKTAkeX13xLIWy7e9qyCBfwDGAioQ”]They had forced the businessman to open his car and stole his bag which contained about GHs4,000, a mobile phone and some personal documents at knife point.

The suspects subsequently attempted to flee on their motorbike after committing the crime but were knocked down by a taxi driver who chanced on the scene and followed them.

They decided to flee on foot after they fell off the bike but the taxi driver raised alarm which drew people in the area to give the two robbers a hot chase.

Zido and Mohammed were apprehended and beaten by the mob but were rescued by two police officers who arrived at the scene.

They have since been handed over the Accra Regional Police Command.

Phone call

Narrating the event leading to their arrest, she said Zibo and Mohammed followed the victim, who was driving from the direction of the East Legon Police Station towards the American House area.

The victim was said to have parked to receive a phone call with all his car window glasses rolled up.

Mohammed was said to have approached him and knocked on his car window to inform him of a flat tyre.

Mrs Tenge said as soon as the victim got down from his car, Mohammed pulled a knife and threatened to kill him if he refused to open the back seat door of his car where a bag was lying.

She said there were people in the area, who were going about their duties and nobody realised there was a robbery going on until the suspects picked the bag and took to their heels.

Mrs Tenge said the two alleged robbers jumped onto their motorbike, which was parked a few metres away, and sped off.

However, a taxi driver, who chanced on the scene, saw them running away and pursued them.

Mrs Tenge said the taxi driver managed to knock them down and drew the attention of people in the area.

Mohammed and Zibo were then apprehended, beaten and handed over to the police.

Mrs Tenge commended the taxi driver and the young men who helped in arresting the two suspects.

The Ministry of Roads and Highways says another underground tunnel which connects East Legon to Spintex in Accra, will be constructed and completed in six months.

This is expected to ease the torturous journey motorists on that route endure.

[contextly_sidebar id=”g8Dd0HJXBFhBIWLhksYbc6FqGKEOrjdQ”]Addressing the press on Wednesday after touring some roads in Accra, Minster for Roads and Highways, Kwasi Amoako-Atta, said reasonable amount of money will be used to construct the tunnel hence Ghanaians will get value for their money.

“Within the next 6 months, I have directed the team to create a second tunnel so that there will be continuous flow of traffic, instead of the current alternating flow that we are experiencing … Once we have the two systems in place, this traffic that we see will be a thing of the past.”

Meanwhile, the Minister has also indicated that, the current renovation works on the Achimota overpass will be completed in two weeks time.

“We are hoping that within two weeks, the Apenkwa bridge will be completed. We are working in earnest, and because of the inconveniences and the long queues that we witnessed, I have encouraged them, and directed that they should work extra hard and finish that project and get that big hole sealed.”

The Ministry of Roads and Highways has closed to traffic the Spintex road underpass which leads to East Legon in Accra in the Greater Accra Region.

According to the Ministry, the closure is because of some emergency repair works on a major water transmission pipeline in that part of the city which had broken down.

[contextly_sidebar id=”Y1TjjT9XpkWEPIrGQigzOebqOfn08lEV”]“The repair works have resulted in the temporary closure of the Spintex road underpass into East Legon” the Ministry noted in a statement.

The statement jointly signed by the Ministry of Roads and Highways, the Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housing and the Ghana Water Company said the works on the pipeline will be completed by midday on Friday, September 9, 2016.

“The Ghana Water Company is attending to emergency repair works on its major 600ml water transmission lines to Accra, along the Spintex road underpass road. The transmission lines serve areas such as Spintex, Baatsona, East Legon, among others,” the statement added.

The statement added that the works are extremely necessary and urgent to enable the restoration of regular supply of water to the surrounding communities as well as prevent the possible caving in of the road, arising from the leakage of the pipelines.

“The Ministry of Roads and Highways, acting through the department of Urban Roads, together with the Minsitry of Water Resources, Works and Housing as well as the Ghana Water Company appeal to the general public, especially commuters who use the route in question to bear with us as we take urgent steps to restore the situation to normalcy by midday tomorrow, Friday, September 9, 2016. Any inconvenience caused is deeply regretted,” the statement added.

Heavy traffic hits parts of Accra

Some major streets in Accra were on Thursday evening hit by heavy vehicular traffic with the Legon-Tetteh Quarshie, 37-Legon and Legon-Madina roads being some of the hardest hit.

Some road users say that they have been in what seems like a gridlock for hours.

Citi FM’s Benard Avle posted on Facebook that this was the worst vehicular traffic that he has seen.

Some believe the cause of the situation is because of the closure of the Spintex road underpass.

There were similar complaints from listeners of the Citi Breakfast Show who were using the Legon-Tetteh Quarshie road on Thursday morning.

Those who normally use public transport have been left stranded, while hawkers have taken the opportunity to market their wares to the occupants of vehicles that are in the traffic.
