Two pregnant women and seven others have been confirmed dead after the canoe on which they were travelling on the Oti River on Sunday afternoon, capsized.

The deceased were part of 11 passengers on-board the canoe returning from a church service in Mawuvi Kofe to Dzagbeshi Kofe; all satellite communities in the Krachi East Municipality of Volta Region.

[contextly_sidebar id=”LQxGOTxOdvokDEmFNKjUy9d9loHiY82J”]The survivors recounted that they were on-board in the middle of the journey when the canoe was caught in a heavy storm and later hit a tree stump which caused it to capsize.

The Municipal National Disaster Management Organization NADMO boss, Dasievor Jacob, who confirmed the incident to Citi News, said all the nine dead bodies were retrieved from the River.

The deceased have been identified as Joyce Atali aged 16 years, Bensah Atali, 21, Edward Atali, 18, Dormenyo Atali, 2, Amedzuwoe Akor, 22, Lucy Tsatsu, 19, Xolali Tsatsu, 18, Mkpebi Maabo, 30, and Adwoa Mkpebu, 19.

Ahotor, a farming community in the Atebubu-Amanten District of the Brong Ahafo Region was on Tuesday [March 21, 2017] thrown into a state of shock and mourning, following the death of two pupils in a dug-out pond in the area.

The deceased were Kindergarten (KG) pupils from the Ahotor DA Primary School.

They were only identified as Michael and Solomon aged 7 and 4 respectively.

The two reportedly got drowned in the pond created by a relative to provide constant water for the construction of his mud house.

According to the Headmaster of the school, Jalulah Peter Naabi who confirmed the incident to Citi News, the two boys were from his school and did not report for school that day.

He said the kids were left in the care of their grandmother who decided to visit the construction site with them whilst their father left to get gravel at a different location for the project.

He continued that the kids took advantage of the lack of vigilance on the part of their grandmother and decided to swim in the pond which had gathered water following Sunday’s rainfall.

He said they were there swimming unnoticed when the unfortunate incident occurred, leaving the two dead.

A third child who refused to swim, stood and watched his senior brothers, and after sensing danger, run home to report the occurrence when he could not see them floating in the pond.

They however, died before help could come. The bodies of the pupils have since been buried and police have also commenced investigations into the matter.

According to eyewitness, the incidence happened on Friday and the trio drowned while the other three teachers survived.

The bodies have however been deposited at the Afoega Catholic Hospital for further medical autopsy.

The incidence is the second in two days after the lifeless body of a taxi cap driver was earlier on Sunday seen floating on a pond in Anfoeta in the Ho west District.

Residents who believed the death of Ashong were questionable are pleading with the police to conduct a thorough investigation to reveal the facts.
