“In the whole game we were superior,” Atletico coach Diego Simeone said.

The home side opened the scoring midway through the first half courtesy of Niguez’s superb strike from 30 yards that sailed into the top corner.

Costa added Atletico’s second at the start of the second half by steering home the rebound after Antoine Griezmann’s shot had been saved.

Griezmann and Costa were both withdrawn as the half progressed, but there was still time for Koke to burst into the area and find the corner.

“In no way did I feel embarrassment for the team,” said Lokomotiv coach Yuri Semin. “We do not consider the tie lost.”

Salzburg shock Dortmund

Kosovo international Valon Berisha scored twice as Red Bull Salzburg won their first leg 2-1 against Borussia Dortmund in Germany.

Berisha was on target twice shortly after half-time before Andre Schurrle’s strike reduced the deficit going into next week’s return game in Austria.

Brazilian defender Marcelo scored the only goal as last season’s semi-finalists Lyon grabbed a 1-0 win at CSKA Moscow.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Aaron Ramsey scored in the first half as Arsenal beat AC Milan 2-0 at the San Siro.

In the later kick-offs, Lucas Ocampos scored twice with Dimitri Payet also on the scoresheet as Marseille saw off Athletic Bilbao 3-1.

Sporting Lisbon put one foot into the quarter-finals with a 2-0 home victory against Viktoria Plzen.

Lazio were held to a 2-2 draw at home by Dynamo Kiev, while Timo Werner ended a four-game goal drought as RB Leipzig recorded a 2-1 win over Zenit St Petersburg.

Barca will pay an initial 105m euros (£96.8m) for the France international, 20, who has agreed a five-year contract and will undergo a medical on Monday.

The deal is eclipsed only by Neymar’s recent £200m move to Paris St-Germain.

Barca revealed that his deal will contain a release clause of 400m euros.

Dembele has not featured for Dortmund since the German Super Cup on 5 August. The German side rejected a bid from Barca for the forward earlier in August, with the player then suspended for missing training.

Dortmund said they rejected Barca’s approach because their offer “did not correspond to the extraordinary footballing and additional value of the player and the present economic situation of the European transfer market”.

With regard to the fee now agreed, Dortmund said in a statement that the payment of add-ons “was agreed up to a maximum total amount of approximately 40% of the fixed transfer fee”.

Barca have failed with three bids for Liverpool midfielder Philippe Coutinho, with their most recent offer of £114m turned down last Friday.

Luis Suarez’s transfer from Liverpool in 2014 is officially their most expensive purchase, at £75m.

However, Barca president Josep Maria Bartomeu has previously that said “the overall cost of the operation” to sign Neymar from Brazilian club Santos in 2013 was “over 100m euros (£92m)”, despite the transfer fee having been disclosed as £48.6m.

Barca are reported to be interested in signing winger Dembele, 20, as a replacement for Neymar, who joined Paris Saint-Germain for a world-record €222 million last week.

At the weekend, L’Equipe reported that Dembele had agreed personal terms, with Spanish outlet Sport saying on Monday that the Blaugrana are surprised that Dortmund want in excess of €100m for him.

But speaking to reporters at a friendly in Erfurt on Sunday, BVB sporting director Michael Zorc said: “I am not aware of an agreement.”

Zorc refused to elaborate further, saying: “It makes no sense to comment on those permanent rumours all the time” but admitting that speculation “will certainly be with us for a while.”

On Monday, kicker reported that Dortmund have yet to be officially contacted by Barcelona but could be willing to talk about an offer in excess of €100m.

Dortmund’s winter signing Alexander Isak, 17, meanwhile, scored four times as Dortmund’s second string beat Erfurt 5-2 on Sunday.

The youngster joined BVB in January, but played only four minutes under former coach Thomas Tuchel and was warned by the Swedish Football Assocation in the summer that he needed to start “rolling at Dortmund.”

Isak has already won two caps for Sweden’s senior side, but did not make the squad for the European Under-21 Championship this summer.
