Comedian DKB has responded to David Oscar’s allegation that he wanted him to attack event company Charterhouse in a documentary he is putting together.

According to DKB, if he truly needed someone to bash Charterhouse in his documentary, he wouldn’t use David Oscar who quit comedy few years ago.

“If I want to attack Charter House, I wouldn’t need irrelevant David Oscar to help me. He said he has retired from comedy to do music, so why would I need a musician to help fight for comedians? Truth is, I never wanted to attack Charter House, and rather I wanted to do a GH comedy episode of upcoming TV show, so that we celebrate comedy from the beginning,” he said.

DKB told Sammy Flex on Zylofon FM that even though he asked David to tell his story of how comedians suffered in the hands of Charter House, he did not categorically instruct him to insult the event firm.

“I told him not to mince his words, and if he would have to “bash” Charter House for the struggle they put comedians through, he should do so but in a very justifiable manner. On that episode, it would be myself, KSM and him [David Oscar]. He agreed to do it, only for me to hear on the radio that he is accusing me of calling him to go and attack Charter House on my behalf, why would I do that?”

He therefore apologized to David Oscar for inviting him to be part of a documentary that tells the story of what they have all been fighting for – Ghanaian comedy.

David Oscar had said on Okay FM on Wednesday 21st February, 2018 that he and DKB created fake accounts on social media to attack event company Charter House in the past but today the latter has a good relationship with the event firm and does not understand why he’d want him [David] to sully his image by doing a dirty job for DKB in his documentary.

“Are you not the self-imposed king of GH comedy, so why don’t you fight them? You are friends with George Quaye, are you not? Although you and I, we teamed up to create anonymous accounts on tweeter to attack the likes of George Quaye, Nii Aryee Tagoe and others. They see you as a friend, don’t they? I am sure they see you as a friend because you are the good guy and David Oscar is the bad guy. Now you are coming to me to go and attack Charter House but I said no! I won’t do that. You are a hypocrite. Why don’t you go and fight them yourself?”David Oscar said.

What engendered this controversy is a post David made on Facebook saying he was the best thing that had happened in Ghanaian stand-up comedy.

“Forget your kings, king – kongs, queens and self imposed monarchs. I am the best thing that happened to Ghanaian Stand up Comedy. Let any fellow who “can” claim otherwise, step up for a debate,” he wrote.

After ditching comedy for music and producing songs like ‘Get there One Day,’ ‘Legal Tender,’ ‘Monalisa’ and ‘Rasta Love,’ David Oscar says he had returned to comedy.

Ghanaian comedian Derrick Kobina Bonney, popularly known as DKB, has mooted that it is high time Ghana adopted Sharia law for sexual offenses like rape.

According to the ‘King of Comedy,’ Sharia Law would serve as a deterrent to people who forcefully have carnal knowledge of others.

He made this comment on the back of the high rate of defilement cases in the country.

“Sharia law might be crude and extreme but thinking about it, it serves the culprit the same diner he served the victim. If your manhood is cut off for defiling a minor to the point of needing surgery, you will get to understand what you also put the victim’s life into,” he told Citi Showbiz.

He further explained that he loves Sharia Law for sexual offense because it is ‘a no excuse’ kind of law which involves punishments that would prevent perpetrators of crimes such as defilement and rape.

What is Sharia Law?

Sharia is the law of Islam. It is cast from Prophet Mohammed’s words, called hadith, his actions, called sunnah, and the Qur’an, which he dictated.

Sharia law itself cannot be altered, but the interpretation of Sharia law, called fiqh, by muftis (Islamic jurists) is given some latitude.

As a legal system, Sharia law is exceptionally broad. While other legal codes regulate public behaviour, Sharia law regulates public behaviour, private behaviour, and even private beliefs.

Compared to other legal codes, Sharia law also prioritises punishment over rehabilitation, and the penalties under Sharia law favour corporal and capital punishments over incarceration.

Of all legal systems in the world today, Sharia law is deemed the most intrusive and restrictive, especially against women.

Some Sharia punishments

Punishments of Sharia Law range from lashes, cutting of a culprit’s hand, to death.

In some jurisdictions, those who commit adultery will be stoned to death if the adulterer was married and lashed 100 times and exiled if he or she was unmarried.

Those engaged in sodomy (homosexuality) will be sentenced to death, along with those who ‘spy for the unbelievers’.

Those who steal ‘as part of banditry’ will have their right hand and left leg cut off, and the punishment for terrorising people is exile.

Rape is completely forbidden in Islamic law, and is a crime punishable by death.

In Islam, capital punishment is reserved for the most extreme crimes which harm individual victims or destabilise society. Rape falls into both of these categories.

Islam takes very seriously the honour and protection of women. The Qur’an repeatedly reminds men to treat women with kindness and fairness. Rape is a horrible crime which causes a women humiliation and physical harm.

A scathing critique made by former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings about comedian DKB’s act seems to have really affected the comedian.

Derrick Kobina Bonney, known in showbiz as DKB has revealed that the comment almost killed his comedy career.

In April 2017, it was reported by Graphic Showbiz that the former first lady had described the comedian as ‘boring’ when she attended the Easter Comedy Show at the Accra International Conference Centre.

“…an avid patron of concerts and comedy shows, the former First Lady made her way to the exit as soon as the famous Ghanaian comedian mounted the stage, saying to the hearing of other patrons seated close by including this writer [Jayne Buckman-Owoo], ‘don’t mind him; his jokes are not funny.’”

In an exclusive interview with Mikki Osei Berko, host of ‘After Hours’ on TV3, DKB stated that the former first lady’s comments nearly collapsed his comedy career.

According to him, Nana Konadu opened him up to his enemies: “I mean what she said was the most detrimental thing anyone could say to me. She opened me up to my enemies, to mockery and it was this close to my career crashing. I mean it is not encouraging for a high profile person of that sort to pass such a comment. She said she didn’t say it.”

The ‘King of Comedy’ later apologised to Nana Konadu when they met.

“I met her and I apologised for the night. I didn’t really care whether she has to apologise to me or not. My bit was that I am the young man so of course I had to come clean. I apologised to her that if that night she was truly offended by the kind of content I was doing, then I am sorry. It was the lowest of my career. I lost a lot of shows because of the comment,” he said.

That notwithstanding, ace satirist Kwaku Sintim-Misa took to social media few days after the said incident to intimate that DKB was still the ‘King of Comedy’ in Ghana.

Broadcaster and communications officer of Charter House had also vented his displeasure at the vitriol that came with the supposed statement by the former first lady, saying every comedian has their bad days.

Despite the recent scathing critiques of comedian DKB over his lacklustre performance at the Easter Comedy Show, ace satirist Kwaku Sintim-Misa (KSM) has asserted that DKB is still King of GH Comedy.

Last week, it was reported that former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings walked out during his performance at the Easter Comedy show which took place at the Accra International Conference Centre.

According to the report, Mrs. Rawlings left the auditorium because most of the comedians told jokes loaded with risqué language.

The Graphic Showbiz had also reported a supposed statement made by the former first lady implying that the comedian, DKB was not funny.

“An avid patron of concerts and comedy shows, the former First Lady made her way to the exit as soon as the famous Ghanaian comedian mounted the stage, saying to the hearing of other patrons seated close by, including this writer [Jayne Buckman-Owoo], “don’t mind him; his jokes are boring”,” the reported indicated.

That notwithstanding, KSM who crowned DKB ‘King of Comedy’ a few years ago, has in an interview with MzGee on Hitz FM’s Showbiz this Week said that the night’s show cannot take DKB’s shine away from him.

He said DKB’s sense of humour is unrivalled and maintained that the comedian reigns supreme over his colleagues at present.

“He has an amazing sense of humour. DKB is a very funny person. He is very hilarious. When he did his show called Point of View, he practically filled up the National Theatre. His last show I saw at Silverbird, he got a standing ovation. So, he has one bad night and all of a sudden, it’s like he is the worst that ever happened to Ghana comedy, I don’t think it is a fair assessment.”

Lastly, KSM also intimated that DKB took Ghanaian stand-up comedy from the grip of the Nigerian comedians and has raised the bar of the comedy game in Ghana.

“He broke that chain when he went toe to toe with the Nigerian and flawed them. He went toe to toe with Basket Mouth and flawed him without a doubt. I am begging that let’s not use that one night to judge his string of performances,” he said.

In the meantime, DKB has accepted that he presented wrong content to the wrong audience and has pledged to work harder on his craft to give his fans quality shows henceforth.

In an interview with Peace FM’s Kwasi Aboagye on Entertainment Review, he said the story hit him hard when he saw it.

[contextly_sidebar id=”K4uwb0SR4V9YSSA6l7H11kvI6Rn2w0AP”]“It is depressing. I really felt depressed when I saw the story. When you wake up early in the morning and you hear such news, you definitely won’t feel good,” he said.

The ‘King of GH Comedy’ who accepted that his performance at the Easter Comedy Show was unimpressive, attributed the flop to the use of wrong jokes for the wrong target audience.

“I think I made a mistake by using the wrong jokes for the wrong people. I had done these jokes before but for a much younger audience and they went well,” he said.

When the host was asked if his success in the comedy scene made him arrogant as it has been posited by some people, he answered in the affirmative.

“Oh yes. I became too arrogant as for that I have accepted it,” he quipped.

DKB however said that he would take all criticisms in good faith and work hard on his subsequent shows.

Former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, gave a damning verdict on Ghana’s King of Comedy, DKB, when she said his jokes were boring.

At an event headlined by DKB, Nana Konadu stormed out of the Accra International Conference Centre unexcited and unconvinced that DKB would shake the audience into a frenzy.

[contextly_sidebar id=”fal43BMQ0b14tohHBvF9FKg9WFqnKwnO”]An avid patron of concerts and comedy shows, the former First Lady made her way to the exit as soon as the famous Ghanaian comedian mounted the stage, saying to the hearing of other patrons seated close by, including this writer, “don’t mind him; his jokes are boring”.

The snub may have been a dent on DKB’s ego but the comedian did little on the night to disprove the former First Lady’s dim view of his stagecraft.

In truth, he failed to deliver the rib-cracking jokes many patrons expected of him, as the self-acclaimed King of Comedy was vulgar in his jokes which did not elicit a favourable response from the audience.

Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings
Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings

It was little surprise, too, that during his performance, DKB kept coaxing the crowd that he could not feel the vibe from them.

However, it was a night of real laughter up until the appearance of DKB. Comedians such as Lekzy Da Comic, Jacinta, Acapella from Nigeria and Salvodor from Uganda gave good accounts of themselves and the audience showed their appreciation with resounding applauses.

Lekzy Da Comic set the mood with his opening act, making jokes about short people, such as himself, which went down well with the audience until he resorted to vulgar-laced jokes.

Bubbly Jacinta followed and maintained the excitement, including a point when she invited three couples on stage and asked the guys to apply make-up on their women, moments which exposed the ignorance of the gentlemen regarding application of makeup as they made a mess of themselves on stage.

The voluptuous Jacinta could have scored higher points if she had not repeated some of her jokes from previous events.

Acapella gave a good account of himself as his jokes about the Nigerian Police and African leaders went down well with the audience.  He had a piece of paper on which he had written the points for his jokes because he said he didn’t want to repeat previous jokes.

The last comedian of the night was Salvador from Uganda who rounded everything up so well. His experience with his wife in the labour room was very well-received.

It was not all about comedy.  There was also some good music in the house thanks to the likes of Kofi Bentil, B Ryt, Ofori Amponsah and Becca. It was good to see Ofori Amponsah back on stage doing what he does best and he did not disappoint though he was not extraordinary.

The show was interlaced with a tribute to comedians who have passed on like Santo, Nkomode, Bob Okalla, Araba Stamp and Bob Cole. There was also dancing and singing competitions and winners were given products from sponsors including mobile phones and coupons for dinner and lunch.

Khemikal was spot-on as MC as he interacted well with the audience and also shared some jokes with them.

Broadcaster and communications personnel for Charter House, George Quaye, has slammed critics of comedian Derrick Kobina Bonney aka DKB for his recent poor performance at the Easter Comedy Show.

The comedian, who is reported to have put up a lacklustre performance at the Easter Comedy Show last week at the Accra International Conference Centre, has come under serious flak from a section of the media and some patrons after the show.

One person who seemed not happy with DKB’s performance is the former First Lady of Ghana, Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings, who is reported to have left the auditorium while DKB took the stage to perform.

In a Graphic Showbiz report, “an avid patron of concerts and comedy shows, the former First Lady made her way to the exit as soon as the famous Ghanaian comedian mounted the stage, saying to the hearing of other patrons seated close by including this writer [Jayne Buckman-Owoo], “don’t mind him; his jokes are not funny.”

Even though DKB has come out to apologise for his not-so-impressive delivery, there are still wild reviews of his act with specific reference to the former First Lady’s supposed remarks.

But some people believe it is not right to judge DKB by a single poor show. One of such people, citifmonline.com has learnt, is George Quaye who took to Facebook to vent his displeasure at the vitriol against DKB.

“Look, making people laugh, when you don’t know a quarter of the many issues on their minds and in their hearts isn’t an easy task. Comedians all over the world suffer bad days. #DKB had one bad night and so what? We suddenly forget all the many great nights he’s had? We suddenly forget how he’s cracked people up time and again on many different platforms? Give the man a break! One bad night isn’t enough to say he’s not funny!” he posted.

It is unclear if George’s post is a direct response to what Nana Konadu is reported by the Graphic Showbiz to have said or a reaction to the rants on social media.

Ghanaian comedy has over the years been under serious criticism. In the recent past, Ghanaian stand-up comedians did not have enough platforms to strut their stuff but it is believed that they are gradually improving and need the support of all Ghanaians to soar higher.

However, some media practitioners are appalled at the seemingly arrogance of some comedians and wish that they become friendly in their approach to dealing with the media.

Hundreds of people in the Northern Region’s Central Gonja District  have been displaced from their homes following heavy rains on Tuesday.

The heavy rains, which started at 11am and lasted for about five hours, were accompanied by strong winds which reportedly ripped the roofs off many structures in some major suburbs of the town, including schools, churches, homes and the only Police station.

The District Chief Executive of the district, Shiraz Ibn Yasir, said in an interview with Citi News that, although they were “yet to determine the extent of the damages,” no lives had, so far, been lost.

However, he described the situation as “very bad”  adding that several major suburbs of the town had been cut off by the floods.

[contextly_sidebar id=”Xc1esCLr6RnP3UM59GZB0KHeFcFep4S3″] According to Mr Ibn Yazir, they have taken steps to educate the residents who had been affected by the floods on how to stay safe and “ how they can survive the situation.”

He confirmed that the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) was at the scene, but the group’s  efforts were being hampered by the rains.

He however, expressed hope that “once the rain subsides because it is still raining, they can quickly go in and determine the extent of damage.”

Several parts of the country have been flooded this year after heavy rains including  Teshie, Nungua and the northern regional capital, Tamale.

In May, 16 districts in Tamale were affected by severe floods after a heavy downpour

Accra has been worst hit in 2014, with the capital consistently flooding after heavy rains.

A Legal Practitioner, Mr. Yaw Oppong has said residents should not be held responsible for the recent floods that hit certain parts of Accra.

According to him the city authorities should rather be held liable for the problem. “citizens should not be blamed for this mess because we have blamed citizens for too long. It is time to ask the state what it has done for us after we have given them part of our powers.”

A heavy rainstorm that hit Accra and other regions on Thursday rendered residents stranded and homeless.

Speaking on Citi FM’s News Analysis Programme, The Big Issue, Mr. Oppong said “the state has failed to comply with its part of the contract” to serve the populace.

According to him, the onus lies on the state to provide citizens with the services which will ensure that citizens do not experience floods. “As far as I am concerned if the state does what it has to do, there will be an impediment for people to dump refuse in the gutter.”

He also emphasized the need for city authorities to be reminded of their duties.

The floods that hit the nation’s capital have partly been attributed to the continual dumping of rubbish into Accra’s drains.

Speaking on the same platform, the President of Policy Think Tank, Imani Ghana, Franklin Cudjoe attributed the problem to infrastructural challenge, adding that the country needs close to 2 billion to fix its infrastructural problems.

Offering a solution to the problem, the Editor of Business Finder,Mr. Toma Amihere proposed that the various districts should account for their internally generated funds to ensure that the funds disbursed to those districts serve its purpose.
