The Minister of Communications, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has touted government’s achievement in attaining a 100 percent digital migration in the country.

According to him, the migration process is almost completed, adding that, it will give Ghanaians the opportunity to experience better picture and sound quality as well as more channels to watch.

Government few years ago commenced the process to switch television broadcasting platforms from analogue transmission to digital, but has postponed the deadline several times.

Speaking at the Meet the Press session in Accra on Monday, Omane Boamah, said government will distribute one million set up boxes nationwide after the migration is completed.

This is because every citizen is entitled to the better picture, sound quality and interactivity that digital television broadcasting provides.”

“Simply put, President Mahama’s government is bringing DSTV, apologies to their competitors, to your home, irrespective of your social and economic background,” he added.

Omane Boamah also used the opportunity to highlight on some government achievements in education, health, transportation, security, agriculture among others.

He further rejected claims by the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) that the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) has collapsed.

According to him, the scheme has improved tremendously due to massive investments by government into the sector.

Deputy Communications Minister, Ato Sarpong, has hinted of government’s plans to distribute about a million free digital boxes to about 4.8 million households with television sets in the country.

The beneficiary communities according to the Minister, largely represent the under-served households in the country, who cannot afford digital boxes to catch up with the nationwide digital migration project.

Mr. Ato Sarpong revealed that, government has already approved 82 million dollars for infrastructure, and 25 million dollars for the procurement of the digital boxes.

Responding to concerns raised by the Omanhene of Ntrubo Traditional Area over challenges they face accessing telecommunication services, the Deputy Minister said his ministry in collaboration with MTN, GIFEC and Ericsson, has identified 125 districts in the country which are to benefit from telecommunications network extension in the latter part of the year.

The network extension project would commence early next year.

On his part, the Chief Staff assured the people of government’s commitment to improving the lives of the people.
