Former Chelsea striker Diego Costa scored a goal before being sent off seconds later on his first start for Atletico Madrid since returning to the Spanish club.

Costa was booked in the 62nd minute of Saturday’s La Liga game with Getafe before scoring six minutes later.

He then jumped into the crowd to celebrate and was subsequently shown a second yellow card and dismissed.

Atletico won the game 2-0 with Angel Correa scoring the opener.

It has been an eventful return to Atletico for Costa. The 29-year-old started his career at the club before leaving to join Chelsea in 2014.

He came off the bench to score in his first game since returning – a 4-0 Copa del Rey win against Lleida Esportiu on Wednesday – before picking up an injury moments later.

Former Chelsea striker Diego Costa has been officially unveiled at Atletico Madrid and could play as early as this week.

Spain international Costa agreed to sign for the La Liga side in September but has been unable to play due to the club’s transfer window ban.

“I’ve waited a long time for this day, I’m tired of training and I need to play,” Costa said on Sunday.

Atletico play Lleida Esportiu in the King’s Cup on Wednesday.

Costa was officially presented at the Wanda Metropolitano stadium on Sunday, alongside fellow Spain team mate Vitolo, who signed from Sevilla in July.

He then took part in an open training session, which local media said was attended by 20,000 supporters.

“I’ve been working hard and training hard but there’s nothing else to do,” Costa added.

“I’m in much better shape than when I arrived, I’ve prepared well and worked hard and I’m ready to help the team and score goals.”

Atletico Madrid have been under a transfer ban for the past two windows after being found guilty of breaching rules over the transfer of foreign players under 18.

But the ban expires on 1 January meaning Costa could make his debut on Wednesday, with his first league appearance set for Saturday at home to Getafe.

Costa, who left Atletico for Chelsea in 2014, scored 59 goals in 120 games appearances for the Blues.

He won two Premier League titles and the League Cup with the club, but found himself frozen out at Stamford Bridge over the summer of 2017.

He returned to Atletico, who are second in La Liga but nine points adrift of leaders Barcelona, three-and-a-half years after he left.

Chelsea have announced they have agreed to sell striker Diego Costa to Atletico Madrid.

Sources indicate Atletico will pay more than £50m for the Spain international, who will now have a medical in Madrid and discuss personal terms.

Chelsea will not be subsiding his wages after he has signed for Atletico.

A Chelsea statement read: “Chelsea Football Club has today agreed terms with Atletico Madrid for the transfer of Diego Costa.

“The transfer will be subject to the agreement of personal terms and a medical.”

Costa refused to return to Chelsea’s Cobham training base this summer, instead remaining in Brazil in hope that Atletico could strike a deal to bring him back to Madrid.

Atletico failed to push through the move before the transfer deadline, safe in the knowledge that Costa would not be able to play for them until January due to the club’s transfer ban.

Costa has not played for 98 days since he appeared for Spain in a World Cup Qualifier against Macedonia in June.

The 28-year-old scored 20 goals in 35 Premier League appearances last season as Chelsea cruised to the Premier League title, but was deemed surplus to requirements by head coach Antonio Conte in the summer.

Costa spent four years at Atletico before joining Chelsea in July 2014 after they met his £32m buy-out clause.

He went on to score 59 goals in 120 matches during his time with Chelsea, winning two Premier League titles and one League Cup.

Chelsea striker Diego Costa has said he wanted to leave the club in the summer.

Costa joined the Blues for £32m in 2014, and was understood to be close to a return to former club Atletico Madrid after a difficult 2015-16 campaign.

The Spain international has since scored 14 Premier League goals, as Chelsea have taken a six-point lead courtesy of 13 successive victories.

“Did I want to go? Yes, yes, I was about to leave. But not because of Chelsea,” said the 28-year-old.

“There was one thing I wanted to change for family reasons but it wasn’t to be, and I continue to be happy here.”

Costa scored 20 goals in his first season in England, as Chelsea won the Premier League title under Jose Mourinho.

But he had netted only four more by the time Mourinho was sacked in December 2015, finishing the season with 12 before being heavily linked with a move.

Brazil-born Costa says he has also made a conscious effort to curb his aggressive nature on the pitch.

“I knew I had to improve that aspect because here in the Premier League there is no mercy,” he said.

“A lot of the time it seemed [referees] were against me. If they’re not going to change, I had to change.”

Chelsea return to action against London rivals Tottenham on Wednesday (20:00 GMT).
