A deputy Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has called for the trial of the suspected murderers of Captain Maxwell Adam Mahama to be broadcast live on TV.

Speaking to Citi News’ Duke Mensah Opoku, the Deputy Minister noted that,  if the trial is televised “a message will be sent to everybody, not just this one, but of other crimes that are widely publicized. The message will be sent to everybody that these actions have consequences.”

[contextly_sidebar id=”elozO2o96vsPChPbosQEe6MjZGMFWz0P”]Capt. Mahama, a military officer, was lynched by some residents of Denkyira-Obuasi in the Central Region, after they allegedly mistook him for an armed robber.

The military officer was deployed to the area together with his other colleagues of the 5th Infantry Battalion, to wage war on illegal miners in the area. So far, about seven persons have been arrested in connection to the murder.

Mr. Oppong Nkrumah, who is also the Member of Parliament for the Ofoase Ayeribi Constituency in the Eastern Region, said the move will seriously serve as a deterrent for others who indulge in what has become known as mob justice.

“My argument is that, Capt. Mahama’s death ought not to be in vain. And my belief is that one of the ways to ensure this is that, the police investigation is done with a legal eye, with an eye to ensure that we will get a conviction at the end of the day. And I am hopeful and optimistic that, that is being done at this moment. As a Member of Parliament, I’m saying that we should all remind ourselves that, this must be done.”

“This is my personal advocacy, that if possible, even this trial and possible conviction should be televised live on national television because this gruesome murder has literally been televised on social media, everybody has seen it.  It will be important as part of the corrective measures to let everybody see the consequences of this act.”

President Nana Akufo-Addo has suspended the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Upper Denkyira West, Daniel Apiannin, following the murder of Captain Maxwell Mahama.

The decision to suspend him today [Thursday] June 1, 2017, was confirmed to Citi News by the Local Government and Rural Development Minister, Hajia Alima Mahama.

[contextly_sidebar id=”gmBAY6FIH5ma27iz6Z6NLyNSIxx8v8hM”]“The President has directed that we do some investigations on the matter and on his [Daniel Apiannin’s] conduct and report. In the interim, he is to hand over his duties to the Deputy Central Regional Minister [Thomas Agyei Baffour]. Therefore, for now, he has been suspended,” the minister stated.

Hajia Mahama noted that the investigation, which will be overseen by the Central Regional Minister, is to cover “the recent events and what has happened in the press – his utterances and all that.”

“We need to have a good view of that, find out what happened and thereafter, we will look at his actions and decide whether he should be relieved of his position. But in the interim, he is on suspension… His utterances have been there. People have questioned the utterances and all that. We are a responsible government. We respond to the queries of people so we are responding and asking him to go on suspension,” she added.

The DCE had made comments suggesting that the deceased and his colleagues were in the area to protect illegal Chinese miners, contrary to the police and the Military High Command’s claims that they were rather in the area on an anti-galamsey mission.

The DCE’s comments, which angered many, was seen as a justification for the dastardly act by the angry youth, who claim to have lynched the officer because they thought he was a robber.

Mr. Apiannin had also said he was not aware of any military presence for any official operation.

Criticism from predecessor

The immediate past DCE for Upper Denkyira West, Ambrose Amoah Eshia, had criticized Mr. Appianin for dereliction of duty, which he said may have led to the lynching of Captain Mahama.

Mr. Amoah Eshia, the new DCE ought to have been aware of the presence of military personnel in his jurisdiction and taken steps to protect them.

Capt. Mahama, was an officer of the 5th Infantry Battalion, was said to have been on his daily jogging routine on Monday when he was lynched by some residents of Denkyira-Obuasi, a town near Diaso where the military was based.

So far about seven persons have been arrested in connection with the murder.

One of the five suspects arrested in connection with the murder of Captain Maxwell Mahama, sustained a gunshot wound during the lynching that resulted in the Army officer’s death at Denkyira-Obuasi.

Captain Mahama apparently fired off a shot during a struggle before being killed by his attackers on Monday morning. It was widely reported that Captain Mahama was armed, whilst on his morning jog.

Revealing this bit of information after a press briefing in Cape Coast on Wednesday, the Central Regional Minister, Kwamena Duncan, said the wounded suspect was left in Diaso for medical attention under the watch of security personnel.

He told Citi News  that “the information I have is that, this person, I am sure even knew the officer and came around with a motorbike. The reasonable thing for him to do was to whisk him away since he knew he [Captain Mahama] was a military officer. Unfortunately, he also attempted to disarm the military officer and in the process, I am sure there was the accidental firing of a shot and that is what happened.”

Mr. Duncan, during the briefing, noted that the suspect “was affected by a gunshot. He had a gunshot wound. In order that that would not become a problem for the commander, he decided that some medical attention is given to him [the suspect] and when he is in a good state, he will be transported here to Cape Coast.”

On the course of the investigations so far, Mr. Duncan assured that Central Regional Police Command was up to the task of finding the murderers of Captain Mahama.

“We have made progress and we can assure the entire country that so far, by the leadership provided by the Regional Commander and his men, we have no doubt in our minds that they will get to the bottom of this matter.”

“We wish also to tell the entire country that this is a matter that will not in any way be covered up and we dare not. The police have promised that they go through the full investigation process to establish a serious and a clear case against those who were involved in this.”

The other four suspects are being held at the Bakaano Police station, and Mr. Duncan said they may be arraigned “by the end of today [Wednesday] or tomorrow [Thursday].”

Some reports said he was armed with a gun while jogging, and some residents who saw him with the gun raised alarm, attracting some of the youth in the community who attacked and killed him.

Citi News gathered that, some armed robbers had attacked residents the day before, and the angry youth were on the lookout for the criminals, hence they mistook Captain Mahama, who was dressed in civilian clothes for a robber.

Subsequent reports suggest that, the murder was linked to the soldier’s mission in the area to fight illegal small-scale mining.

Since the tragic news came to light on Tuesday morning, the District Chief Executive (DCE) of the Upper Denkyira West District, Daniel Appianin revealed to Citi News that some army personnel had invaded Denkyira-Obuasi in the Central Region beating up residents in the area.

According to the DCE, the soldiers had taken about 80 men hostage, while women and children have been camped in a church in the town.

The Ghana Armed Forces subsequently urged its troops to remain calm following the murder and has said it is working to bring justice to the deceased and those affected by his murder.
