Some employees of Jai Mai Communications Limited, a company owned by the deported Indian Businessman, Ashok Sivram, are threatening to embark on a demonstration against what they consider an unfair treatment of their boss.

The about three hundred employees say his absence is negatively affecting the operations of the company and by extension their livelihood.

[contextly_sidebar id=”CLETiQSzoCd8jSLhqSi58AVn7XKdmISH”]They also fear they might lose their jobs following the deportation.

Speaking to Citi News, Spokesperson for the employees, Richard Ankrah, said they are awaiting clearance from the Police to embark on their protest.

“Our next action is that by Friday we are embarking on a protest. We are waiting for the permission of the Police as well. We have written to them and we are waiting that they will give us the permission to do a peaceful demonstration to plead with the government to kindly grant him the visa and the residence permit as well.”

Background

The GIS, following an order by the Interior Ministry in June 2017, deported Mr. Sivaram on the premise that he had forged his marriage certificate in an application for citizenship, which led his lawyer to contest his deportation by seeking judicial review.

The High Court, which first heard the case, upheld the businessman’s application and quashed his deportation order on July 31 on the grounds that the Interior Minister exceeded his jurisdiction.

The applicant, after the failure of the GIS to comply with the first order, sought an order from the court in September the same year to compel them to comply with the first order.

The High Court once again ordered the GIS to restore the Residence and Work Permit of Mr. Sivaram within seven days, and also ordered the GIS’s assigns, agents and servants to desist from harassing him until his application before the Service was duly processed.

The GIS, represented by the Attorney General’s office, after the second case, filed a stay of proceedings at the High Court which was subsequently dismissed.

They went ahead to appeal the ruling in the Court of Appeal which was also dismissed leading them to the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court however upheld GIS’s position and quashed the ruling of the High court which had compelled the Immigration Service to restore the work and residence permits of Mr. Ashok Kumar.

Immigration Service justifies deportation

The Ghana Immigration Service has since defended its decision to repatriate Mr. Sivaram from Ghana.

According to GIS, Mr. Ashok was living in the country illegally because his work and residence permits had expired since December 15, 2017.

An International Relations Analyst, Dr. Vladimir Antwi Danso has said that Kenya simply exercised its sovereign rights by refusing Peter Mac Manu entry into the country.

In a Citi News interview, Dr. Antwi Danso neither condemned nor condoned Kenya’s actions, stating that, the tenets of diplomacy allowed any country to take such decisions at its discretion.

[contextly_sidebar id=”eSeIgpM6sgu5H7XfKjwmzaL2Fmq1bje8″]“They [Kenya] invite who they want and disallow who they don’t want. It’s a bonafide right… It is an accepted norm in diplomacy. You look at the thing and think it will disturb your security, your political structure so you don’t want it… He is a persona non-grata so I won’t allow him entry. Period… I cannot say they did right or didn’t do right”, he said.

He believes no one should attempt subjecting Kenya’s actions to a legitimacy test and if Ghana is unhappy about Mr. Mac Manu being denied entry into the East African country, it is at liberty to retaliate “and if the retaliation comes to the worst, break off diplomatic relations.”

Mr. Mac Manu was to lead a team of election observers from the Democratic Union of Africa into Kenya in the run up to that country’s election, slated for August 8.

He was however denied access into the country on  grounds that he is an Honorary Chairman of the Democratic Union of Africa, an umbrella body of  centre and centre- right parties in Africa which includes some opposition parties in Kenya.

He has since returned to Ghana.

Meanwhile Chief Agent Kenyan’s National Super Alliance (NASA), James Orengo has revealed that the 2016 NPP National Campaign Manager, Peter Mac Manu and one other compatriot were arrested and deported as soon as they arrived in Kenya.

Earlier reports from Kenya had suggested Mr. Manu’s denial was linked to his role as Honorary Chairman of the Democratic Union of Africa, an umbrella body of centre- right parties in Africa which includes some opposition parties in Kenya.

Mr. Orengo however denied these claims, saying other representatives from the United States suffered a similar fate.

“This should be seen in the context of an operation that they were carrying yesterday. Not just in this national centre but everywhere They were removed from the plane, they did not formally disembark from the plane, they were taken away by the Police and pushed into another plane back to Ghana.

“We had also friends from Canada and United States. Both of them in sharing their experiences said the Police invaded their apartment where they were living and one of them was molested and thrown away into the bush”

Mr. Orengo, however, denied these claims, saying it was a general operation that affected agents from the United States too.

“This should be seen in the context of an operation that they were carrying yesterday not just in this national centre but everywhere. They were removed from the plane, they did not formally disembark from the plane, they were taken away by the Police and pushed into another plane back to Ghana.

As the debate on whether Peter Mac Manu and others were treated fairly rages, an International Relations Analyst, Dr. Vladimir Antwi Danso has said that Kenya simply exercised its sovereign rights by refusing Peter Mac Manu entry into the country.

In a Citi News interview, Dr. Antwi Danso neither condemned nor condoned Kenya’s actions, stating that, the tenets of diplomacy allows any country to take these decisions at its discretion.

Over 150 International Observers have been given accreditation to observe the elections in the country.

The presidential election has 18 candidates with the notable ones being incumbent President Uhuru Kenyata of Jubilee Coalition and Raila Odinga of Nasa Coalition.

253 Nigerian nationals stranded in Libya have been returned home with the help of the United Nations migration agency International Organisation for Migration (IOM).

An Airbus A333-200 airplane with registration number 5A LAT disembarked 140 women, 102 men and 11 children at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos on Tuesday.

Officials of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) were at the airport to help the returnees go back to their families.

“We are giving them some stipends. We need to let them realize that the country they left some years ago is not the same country they are meeting today. We have moved ahead and everybody now has equal opportunity to be the best you can be,” NEMA Director General of Engr Mustapha Maihaja told the media.

Local news portal Vanguard spoke to one of the returnees, only identified as Mary, who explained her ordeal in Libya.

“They were selling some of us like wood from one guard who will take us to some destination and again sell us to another who will now be our new owner. That will take us again to some distance and say his contract with us has expired and again sell us to another person,” she said.

In early April, IOM documented reports of slave markets and kidnapping rings on migrant routes in Libya run by traffickers to buy and sell West African migrants.

Mary’s ordeal confirmed the reports which indicated that with the support of Ghanaians and Nigerians who work for traffickers, “sub-Saharan migrants were being sold and bought by Libyans”.

All the surviving migrants spoken to by IOM gave similar accounts.

The north African country has become a transit zone for thousands of migrants who are keen to escape poverty and war to Europe.

Migrant numbers from Libya to Italy have soared dramatically in 2017 with more than 550 deaths recorded in the Mediterranean this year.
