The family of the late Major Maxwell Mahama has expressed disappointment over the number of persons being tried for his murder.

According to the family, given the number of people seen in videos which were circulated showing the attack on the late soldier and the initial flurry of arrests the police made, it would have expected to see more people facing the courts over the gruesome incident.

[contextly_sidebar id=”CEttBIVpNA83p48Osk1jELf95p47bqNX”]The spokesperson for the family, Zakaria Ahmed told Citi News in an interview that they believe more people have been left off the hook.

He said, although the family could not blame the police for the development, they feel it is necessary to convey their sentiments on the matter.

“We have been expecting that we will have more people facing the trial than we have. Looking at what we saw in the videos, and the number of people that were arrested at the beginning, we thought that we would have had more people… You have mob action, we expect to have a mob trial. The court will look at everyone and let them come and defend themselves… explain their presence at the scene on that day….Unfortunately, this is not what is happening and we cannot hold the police responsible,” he said.

The late Major Mahama, was lynched under bizarre circumstances at Denkyira-Obuasi in the Central Region in May 2017, while serving as part of a task-force deployed to root out illegal mining in the area.

Over 50 suspects were initially arrested over the incident.

36 of the accused persons were discharged earlier by a district court.

In December 2017, a district court then freed 8 of the suspects standing trial due to lack of evidence to prosecute them.

They were among 14 persons facing trial on charges of murder and were released upon the request of the Attorney General.

Dr Lawrence Tetteh, an economist and international evangelist, is to hold a healing crusade at Denkyira Obuase in October, where a mob action led to the death of Major Maxwell Adam Mahama, a Detachment Commander.

Dr Tetteh, also the President of the UK based Worldwide Miracle Outreach told reporters in Accra on Tuesday that he would rally churches around the community in the Central Region, for a massive healing and restoration crusade.

He said a national tragedy occurred in the town, “and I believe as a nation we are all guilty in one way or the other for the shedding of an innocent blood”.

Dr Tetteh said: “The people of Ghana has taken so many things for granted,” and called on all well-meaning Ghanaians to turn to God and mend their ways.

He said it was written in 2 Chronicle 7:14 that “If my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I  hear from heaven and heal the land”.

Major Mahama, who was jogging on May 29, was killed by a mob from Denkyira Obuase, who mistook him for an armed robber.

An Accra Magistrate Court has ordered for the nineteen people facing trial for the lynching of Major Mahama to be remanded in prison custody.

The order followed a request by the prosecutor DSP George Amega who asked the court to transfer the suspects from police custody.

[contextly_sidebar id=”4vMrgJCi0ogitXljYTbOGFYDEnVC7Cdt”]According to the prosecution the suspects were scattered in a number of Police cells in Accra making access to them difficult.

The Magistrate Ebenezer Kwaku Ansah thus remanded the nineteen people to the Nsawam prisons.

The Nineteen have been charged with murder and abetment of murder.

Background

The deceased, Major Mahama, an officer of the 5th Infantry Battalion, is said to have been on his daily jogging routine on Monday [May 29, 2017], when some angry youth of the town attacked him, allegedly on suspicion of being an armed robber.

The Police subsequently arrested over fifty suspects who had fled the town to other regions in the country.

The court earlier ordered the police to relocate seventeen-year-old boy, Ebenezer Asamoah, one of the suspects to a borstal home when he is remanded until the police are able to establish that he is eighteen.

At a previous hearing on July 6, 2017, 13 out of 32 were discharged. Their discharge followed a decision by the state to have them released.

The Police say some forty-two (42) persons have so far been arrested in connection with the horrendous killing of Captain Maxwell Mahama.

Whereas some of the suspects have already been arraigned and remanded, others are being screened and would be sent to court today [Monday].

Captain Maxwell Mahama was lynched by residents of Denkyira-Obuasi in the Central Region on Monday May 29, and he will be laid to rest this Friday, June 9, 2017.

[contextly_sidebar id=”ioLunugGFPzl4Jm1ZFRXjYTFnBH4anKJ”]The police have pledged to arrest all suspects connected to the killing of the young brilliant solider.

Over the weekend, a number of suspects were nabbed at various hideouts in the Western and Ashanti Regions.

The arrest of a twelve year old at Manaso Nkwanta in the Ashanti Region stunned many people.

Speaking to Citi News on the development, the Deputy Director of Public Affairs at the Ghana Police Service, DSP Sheila Kesse Abayei Buckman, said: “We have arrested 42 suspects which we believe to be directly connected to the murder of the deceased. Some of them were arrested in the Central Region, Western and others from the Ashanti Region.”

She added that, the investigations are keenly being monitored by the Police headquarters in Accra.

“We will not disclose the location of the suspects for now, but what I can assure you is that, investigations are under the careful control of the headquarters and we are being careful not to put them together so that they don’t end up making up stories. So they are placed in different cells at different places.”

“People who have been arrested over the weekend will have to be presented to court on Monday for the court to decide the next line of action,” she added.
