Ghana star Andre Ayew has hit back at former West Ham director of recruitment Tony Henry for questioning the attitude of African players.

Henry was fired by the Hammers for comments he made claiming that players from the continent caused trouble in the dressing room.

The 28-year old, who left West Ham on deadline day to rejoin Swansea in an £18 million deal, has now hit out at the Hammers officials insisting Africans bring success to their sides.

Ayew says African players are very proud of themselves and where they come from.

“I just know that we African players are proud of ourselves, we know where we have come from, and we believe in our football,” said Ayew.

“African players like Didier Drogba and Samuel Eto’o have played at the greatest clubs in the world and done their jobs.

“We have done a lot to get into professional football and African footballers now play for Barcelona, Real Madrid and Chelsea.

“It’s an honour to be an African. I am so proud and so happy and I wouldn’t change it for anything.”

Ayew is in line to make his Swansea debut this weekend against Burnley in the Premier League.

Two-goal Andre Ayew insists West Ham United’s never-say-die attitude inspired them to come from 2-0 down to defeat Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabaco Cup.

The Hammers’ hopes of reaching the quarter-finals looked all but dead and buried when first-half goals from Moussa Sissoko and Dele Alli sent them back to the dressing room two goals behind at the break.

However, a pair of typically predatory finishes from the Ghana star, followed by a towering header from Angelo Ogbonna, completed a sensational and unforgettable comeback victory at the Home of Football.

Now, Ayew says the challenge is for West Ham to maintain the same levels of intensity and commitment when they travel to Selhurst Park for an important Premier League derby with Crystal Palace on Saturday.

“I think the game started really tough as Tottenham took the lead after five minutes, but we stayed confident and we weren’t down,” said the Sky Sports’ Man of the Match. “The coach [Slaven Bilic] had the words at half-time, so I want to congratulate the whole team for what they have done today.

“It’s a massive win, but we need to stay calm because we’ve got a massive game on Saturday. We need to enjoy this win tonight, because it’s a derby and it’s Tottenham and because it’s always a great victory, but prepare for Saturday because it’s very, very important.

“We knew if we scored a goal early in the second half, we would have a chance, but we also knew Tottenham have a big squad and great players and a great manager. Tonight, we have shown we have character and we have quality, but we need to relax and work hard, because Saturday is a big one.

“Saturday is very important so we’re going to prepare, have a good rest, then work hard and hopefully we can collect the three points.”

Ayew said the Hammers’ second-half performance showed the team are not only united, but united behind manager Slaven Bilic.

“We showed a lot of determination in the second half. It was a very good win, considering what we’ve been going through in the Premier League.

“It’s not been easy, it’s been a tough time, but we have a lot of quality players and we need to stick together and keep fighting as a team and we’ll get out of this situation.

“When you’re in a Club like West Ham and the results are difficult, the manager is under pressure, and the players are too, but we just need to keep working hard. The manager knows the players are behind him and will give everything, not just for him but for themselves too, because we have to wear the shirt with pride.

“We’re going to do everything to get some points and get out of that zone. There is a fighting spirit and we need to do it week-in, week-out.

“This is a good win for confidence. It’s a derby with Tottenham at Wembley and we were losing 2-0 at half-time, so there are a lot of things from this which smell good, but in football we cannot get carried away. We need to work even harder on Saturday if we want to get something.”

Black Stars captains Asamoah Gyan and Andre Ayew will have to cheer their team mates from the touchlines in Brazzaville after it emerged that they had picked up injuries ruling them out of the match.

The two players were taken off in the 1-1 draw in Kumasi in the second half and it has now been revealed that they were both injured.

Gyan hurt his groin while Andre Ayew picked up a thigh injury.

They were not part of the team’s training in Accra on Saturday and it has been confirmed that they will not play the return leg in Congo on Tuesday.

It is not clear if they will travel with their colleagues to Congo or not but coach Kwesi Appiah will definitely shuffle his team for the match as he chases Ghana’s first victory of the series and a very slim chance of going to Russia in 2018.

The English Premier League season ended this Sunday with a lot of thrill and drama.

From John Terry’s emotional farewell speech, Liverpool’s comfortable stroll into the Top 4, to the suspense of wondering whether or not Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal we going to book a place in the Top 4, many things made the climax of the season memorable.

Ghanaian duo, Dede Ayew and Jordan Ayew both got their names on the scorecards, hitting the back of the net for their respective clubs; West Ham United and Swansea.jordan-ayew-swansea

More remarkable about their goals were that the blood-brothers scored in the same minute, the 72nd minute.

Dede Ayew’s goal gave West Ham the lead while Jordan’s was to get them on level pegging.

Jordan’s goal was his first for the club since he joined in January.

The game ended with both teams snatching the 3 points at stake.

Swansea, and West Ham, both won by 2 goals to 1.

The Black Stars are into the semi-finals of the AFCON after a 2-1 win over DR Congo in the quarter-final.

Jordan Ayew latched onto a pass from Mubarak Wakaso, beat a defender and fired past the goalkeeper to give the Black Stars the lead in the second half.

1

The lead lasted only 7 minutes as Mpoku, fired in a beauty for the Congolese from just outside the penalty area.

However, the Black Stars restored their lead as Andre Ayew scored from the penalty spot after Christian Atsu was brought down in the penalty box.

Ghana will now face Cameroon who beat Senegal on penalties in the semi-final.

5

The Congolese should have taken an early lead as Hull City striker Dieumerci Mbokani pounced on a poor backpass, rounded the keeper but hit the post.

Mbokani thought he should have been awarded a penalty after a tussle with John Boye in the box but the referee waved play-on.

4

The Ghanaians struggled to get into the game but lacked a focal front up front.

The Black Stars resorted to long balls which were easily dealt with by the Congolese defence.

3

Christian Atsu, Jordan Ayew and Andre were shackled well by the defence and were unable to create much for the Stars

Mbokani had a couple more chances in the half firing wide when through on goal and straight at Brimah from just outside the box.

The Black Stars started the second half brightly with Andre Ayew firing in a shot which was saved comfortably by the goalkeeper.

But the Ghanaians were relentless and almost took the lead as Wakaso’s free-kick bounced in front of the keeper who just about kept it out.

2

Moments later, Jordan Ayew danced into the box, nutmegged a defender and was challenged as he cut back in the box but the referee waved play on.

Thomas Partey’s shot was then well saved by the Congolese keeper.

The Black Stars eventually broke the deadlock as Jordan Ayew fired past the Congolese keeper.

The Congolese found a way back into the game minutes later as Mpoku took on a Stars defence that kept backing away and fired in a belter.

But Andre Ayew fired the Black Stars into the semis from the spot after the marauding Christian Atsu was upended in the box.

The Congolese had a chance to equalise late on but Brimah, in Ghana’s goal was equal to a shot.

Christian Atsu almost sealed the win for Ghana but his shot was saved after a delightful run into the box but the Black Stars had done enough to secure a 6th straight semi-final appearance .

Black Stars forward Andre Ayew says results are his major concern not fancy football at the 2017 African Nations Cup in Gabon.

Ayew and his team-mates put up another gutsy performance to get a 1-0 win over Mali in their second group D match played at the Port Gentil Stadium on Saturday.

The win sends Ghana to the quarter-finals of the tournament ahead of their last group match against Egypt on January 25.

Speaking after the match, Ayew admitted that the team needed to play better especially in the second half of matches but he would rather grind out results if it would bring the Nations Cup to the team in the end.

“If we play like this and it brings us the cup, I will do it through the entire tournament but then, we need to play better. It is true that we can do better and we are going to improve but we know what we are doing.

When we do not have the ball on the field, we know what we are about. We have a good team and a goalkeeper who made two great saves today and we need to continue working. It is very true that we need to play better in the second half of games.”

Ayew has scored once in the tournament and he is expected to feature against Egypt on January 25 despite playing through illness against Mali.

Injured Black Stars deputy skipper, Andre Ayew, Greece-based Mubarak Wakaso, and Germany-based Baba Rahman, have combined to buy almost a thousand tickets for kids in Tamale to watch the game against the Cranes of Uganda this afternoon.

Ghana will play the Cranes at the Tamale Sports Stadium in the opening group fixture of the 2018 World Cup qualifiers on Friday at 15:00 GMT.

The three players, who hail from northern Ghana, insist that they want to give the kids in the region a lifetime opportunity of watching a Black Stars game for the first time.

bobby

According to reports in Tamale, Ayew will arrive on Friday and has promised to purchase five thousand tickets while Wakaso and Baba Rahman will combine to buy another five thousand tickets.

The trio hail from the Northern part of the country and their actions will be seen as a huge act of generosity.

On Thursday, fans of the Black Stars in Tamale were complaining about  the high prices of tickets and this will come as a huge relief to them.

In recent times, national support for the Black Stars has dwindled drastically following a poor campaign at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, which saw the players play poorly, after they had fought for bonuses, forcing the government to airlift three million dollars to Brazil.

West Ham record signing Andre Ayew has returned to former club Marseille – but only for treatment on his injured thigh.

The Hammers’ £20million man sustained the injury in August and was ruled out for up to four months.

And now L’Equipe has revealed that Ayew has been allowed by his employers to return to Marseille to undergo more rehab on the problem.

It has been reported that Ayew asked West Ham to allow him to head back to France so he could work in facilities he knows best and with medical staff who have treated him before.

Ayew did not require surgery on the injury, which occurred on his club debut, but he is still not expected back before December.

The World Cup in Brazil has been described as the best in the tournament’s history, with more goals and upsets than usual. Audiences have also noticed an explosion in tattoos. But what stories do they tell?

Mauricio Pinilla, Chile

Mauricio Pinilla's tattoo Footage of Pinilla’s commemorative tattoo has appeared on Twitter
Mauricio Pinilla

This is the most “World Cup” of World Cup tattoos. Inked in in just the last few days, it serves to remind striker Pinilla of his own near-miss in extra time during the second-round game against Brazil. Chile were later knocked out on penalties, with Pinilla having his attempt saved. The line “One centimetre from glory” adds to the tattoo’s hair-shirt quality. “It illustrates the depth of despair this individual is feeling,” says David Fletcher, a sports psychologist at Loughborough University. “It’s interesting that the tattoo is on his back, rather than his arm or wrist. It suggests that he’s not using it as a spur to further action but more of a statement of how close he came to glory.”

Sergio Ramos, Spain

Sergio Ramos and tattoo

The twin offerings – one on each calf – from the Real Madrid player show the World Cup and Champions League trophies. Spain did not win the former until 2010, while Real had to wait 12 years to take the latter for a record 10th time. Ramos and his teammates had high hopes of retaining the World Cup trophy in Brazil, but they were knocked out in the first round. “Not every tattoo has a narrative, and even those that do are often contrived,” says Matt Lodder, a body art historian at the University of Essex.

Nigel de Jong, Netherlands

Nigel De Jong with tattoos

The artist Ade Itameda, who draws inspiration from traditional Indonesian ornaments, patterns and carvings, designed the warrior-like tattoos covering the torso, arms and hands of midfielder Nigel de Jong. “The warrior theme shows just how central the World Cup is to his very being,” says David Fletcher. “It demonstrates that this one, gladiatorial moment in his life is core to his being and that there is no doubt in his mind that this is the defining moment of his life. It’s not just a game to these guys. They’ve trained a whole lifetime and it comes down to a few moments.”

Daniele de Rossi, Italy

Daniele de Rossi and tattoo

The midfielder plays up his own tough approach, which has sometimes got him into trouble, with a mocked-up triangular “hazard” sign of a tackle being performed. It looks like a warning of a slippery floor left behind by an office cleaner. But the tattoo has a bit of extra edge, as the opponent’s leg is hacked away. Because of the need to wear socks during football matches, it is usually seen only in training.

Neymar, Brazil

Neymar close-up

The injured superstar’s neck inscription has a philosophical edge, much-needed following his team’s semi-final performance. The expression “Tudo Passa” translates into “Everything passes” or “Nothing lasts” in English. Neymar, who left the tournament early with a broken backbone, had to watch as his side were beaten 7-1 by Germany. At least he has the consolation of being only 22 years old, with a chance of making amends for the team in 2018 and 2022. Neymar also has tattoos on his legs saying “Ousadia” and “Alegria”, meaning “daring” and “joy”, both of which he commissioned before joining Barcelona last year.

Raheem Sterling, England

Raheem Sterling and tattoo

The teenage winger draws inspiration from his childhood in west London, choosing a picture of a 10-year-old boy staring up in wonder at Wembley Stadium’s famous arch, accompanied by the statement: “It’s a dream.” “Wembley was literally around the corner,” he has said. “I used to ride my bike round this little car park that was by the stadium. It’s something that I’ve always wanted – to play for England and be the best I can be as a footballer.”

Raul Meireles, Portugal

Raul Meireles and tattoo

The montage adorning the entire right leg of the midfielder, who plays his club football in Turkey, works like an autobiography/travelogue. Designs include the baroque Torre dos Clerigos church in Meireles’ home city of Porto, a cable car (either in Porto or Lisbon, according to the Anglo-Portuguese Society) and a Portuguese Fado guitar. There is a depiction of the Blue Mosque in Istanbul, where his club Fenerbahce is based, at the top of the thigh. This is reached via a red telephone box above the knee – a reminder of Meireles’ time playing for Chelsea and Liverpool.

Tim Howard, USA

Tim Howard

The shot-stopper par excellence is one of the most decorated of the players on display in Brazil. He has a Superman logo, dragons and a crucifix among his tattoo collection. It also includes pictures of his mother as a young woman and his grandfather in military uniform, which he had done at the Aurora studio in Lancaster in May. “He brought in some photographs to work from,” says co-owner Sam Wisniewski. “He had obviously thought about what he wanted and he sat down and talked about it. If the design is really personal and we know the full story, that makes the design much better.” Unlike most players, Howard does not usually remove his shirts after matches. In this picture, he was bearing his torso as part of a campaign for the animal rights group Peta.

Lionel Messi, Argentina

Lionel Messi and tattoo

Messi has his son Thiago’s name tattooed on to his left calf, underneath a pair of hands, presumably based on those of the child. They are not believed to refer to fellow countryman Diego Maradona’s “hand of God” goal against England in the quarter-final of the 1986 World Cup. Messi’s effort is seldom witnessed in matches because it is usually covered by a sock.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal

Cristiano Ronaldo

The Portugal captain is something of a counter-culturalist in modern football, choosing not to have any tattoos. The reason? He frequently gives blood and it’s not recommended that people do so soon after getting a tattoo or body piercing, for fear of spreading infections. In fact, it’s banned within four months in the UK.
