They said the boy grabbed a gun on Saturday afternoon after his sister would not give up the controller.

He allegedly shot her from behind, and the bullet entered her brain.

A local sheriff announced on Sunday that the teen had died of her injuries in a Memphis hospital. It was unclear how the boy obtained the gun.

It is also unclear what consequences the nine-year-old will face.

“I assume he’s seen this on video games or TV. I don’t know if he knew exactly what this would do. I can’t answer that. I do know it’s a tragedy.”

The children’s mother was in another room, feeding other children lunch at the time of the incident.

Police are still investigating the circumstances of the shooting, including how the weapon – a .25 calibre handgun – was accessed.

“This is all new ground for us, we’ve never dealt with a kid shooting a kid at age nine,” Sheriff Cantrell told local press.

The 92 comprised of health workers of the Tema General Hospital who worked on the patient, his friends, family and others, Dr John Yabani, Tema Metropolitan Health Directorate, disclosed this to the Ghana News Agency on Friday.

Dr Yabani indicated that the 92 where identified through the retracing of the victim’s path at Ashaiman, Nmai-Dzor and Tema.

He said they were being monitored for 21 days for symptoms of the disease, early detection and treatment in case any of them had been infected, adding that they were at different  days of monitoring depending on when they had the contact with the patient.

He gave the assurance that all those being monitored were currently healthy and have no symptoms of the disease and appealed to the public to immediately report to any health institution when they have a fever of 37.5 degrees Celsius, vomiting of blood, among others for appropriate tests and care.

The victim who was admitted at the Tema General Hospital on February 23 died on admission on February 28.

Her agency said Chambers, who died from natural causes on Wednesday evening, would be “greatly missed”.

It said: “Emma created a wealth of characters and an immense body of work. She brought laughter and joy to many”.

Chambers is survived by her husband, fellow actor Ian Dunn.

She played the character of Alice Tinker, a village church verger, in The Vicar of Dibley between 1994 and 2007, alongside Dawn French in the title role.

In 1998, she won the British Comedy Award for best TV actress for her performance. The following year she appeared as Honey in Notting Hill, the younger sister of Hugh Grant’s character, William Thacker.

The deceased was pronounced dead after he was rushed to the Tafo Government Hospital.

Police at Tafo-Pankrono have arrested an ex-boyfriend of the deceased’s girlfriend, Sulemana Gibril to assist in investigations.

Suspect, Gibril is said to have gone to the house of his former girlfriend, Mercy Osei on Monday night, to collect his T.V set, and threatened her to be wary of her relationship with the deceased.

The suspect later returned to Ms. Osei’s house to pick up his son, who was living with her together with her new boyfriend.

The Tafo-Pankrono Police who are yet to establish factually that the suspect committed the crime said following his arrest at Atafua near Asuofia, his wife confessed to the police that the suspect came home in that morning on that fateful day and removed his clothes, socks and sneakers and ordered her to wash them which she did.

She, however, denied seeing any blood stains on the clothes.

The suspect also denied the offence, and mentioned one Yaw Sarpong, alias “50 Cent”, and the wife as those who should be arrested and questioned over the murder of the deceased.

The couple is yet to be arrested. Police say they have begun investigations into the incident.

Meanwhile, the body of the deceased has been deposited at the morgue of the Tafo Government Hospital awaiting autopsy.

The vaccines were expected to arrive over the weekend, but the Ministry in a press statement said suppliers had indicated that there will be a slight delay in the delivery.

The Ministry says inasmuch as efforts are being made to facilitate the process, the supplier has indicated that there will be a slight delay in delivery.

“It is expected that; the vaccine will arrive in Accra by the middle of next week. The Ministry of Health and WHO are closely following up to ensure this is expedited. The vaccines will be immediately deployed for immediate use on arrival. We will keep you updated on any new development,” the statement said.

Apart from the vaccines, the country was also expected to take delivery of the anti-viral agents Tamiflu from the World Health Organization, as part of measures to combat the threat of the disease.

The drug, Tamiflu, was given to tens of thousands of people during the swine flu pandemic in 2009.

The disease has been detected in at least a dozen students of Kumasi Academy in the Ashanti Region, where four students are suspected to have died from it.

The school’s students and staff were administered some other antiviral agents, and the school was also fumigated, following the detection of the swine flu.

Aside from the suspected outbreak of swine flu at Kumasi Academy, a death from meningitis was recorded at the Koforidua Secondary Technical School in the Eastern Region.

Other meningitis deaths were recorded at the Damango Senior High School in the Northern Region and the Bawku Secondary Technical and Tempane SHS both in the Upper East Region.

Response action

The Ministry in the statement also outlined measures it had taken to prevent a further spread of the disease .

These measures are listed below :

1. Alert has been sent to all health facilities for heightened awareness, early case detection and improved case management.

2. Enhanced surveillance in all the schools and communities.

3. Public education is ongoing.

4. Contact tracing initiated and ongoing.

5. National Technical Coordinating Committee (NTCC), Regional and District Public Health Emergency Management Committees activated.

6. Vaccines and more antivirals for H1N1 arranged for.

7. Initiated process to enhance School Health

8. Designating a hospital to each second cycle institution.

The school’s head teacher, Kipo Harrison, confirmed this on Damongo-based Pad FM.

He however dismissed attempts to link the other 12 students on admission at the Damongo district hospital to the same disease.

Kipo Harrison said a medical team from the Tamale Teaching Hospital took the deceased’s blood sample for further laboratory test.

The said student died on Tuesday December 12, 2017, whilst 12 others were admitted at the district hospital.

Citi News sources at the Damongo District Hospital confirmed the incident, but the school authorities were initially tight-lipped on the matter.

The situation has reportedly caused fear and panic among continuing students.

This latest health scare comes on the back of the death of four students of Kumasi Academy in the Ashanti Region.

The pandemic strain of influenza type A, H1N1 2009, also known as Swine Flu, was later detected in some samples from the school.

Aside from the four deaths, several students were also been hospitalized.

Respiratory samples sent to the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research also indicated that there was an outbreak of an acute respiratory infection which the Health Ministry has since attributed as the cause of some of the deaths.

The whole student population had to be administered with antibiotics as part of a prophylaxis after which the school was fumigated

However, no definite cause of the deaths has been declared.

Another school that has had to deal with a health situation in recent days is the Koforidua Technical School, where a second-year science student who passed away over the weekend, was confirmed to have died from Meningitis.

However, health officials in both the Ashanti Region and the Eastern Regions, have insisted that they have contained the situation, and have assured the public of their commitment to ensuring the safety of the students.

The Eastern Regional Director of Health Services, Dr. Charity Sarpong, told Citi News: “I must say that currently, everything is calm in the school because we have given them the necessary support, they know what to look out for, they also have our contact numbers so that when there is something we will be immediately contacted for the necessary support.”

Swine flu outbreak at KUMACA contained – Health officials

Addressing the incident at KUMACA, the Ashanti Regional Health Director, Dr. Emmanuel Tenkorang, said: “So far so good. Since Monday, there has not been any new case and so far we have 11 students on admission. Three are on admission at the KNUST hospital. Komfo Anokye has one on admission. At Kumasi South hospital, there are five on admission, and then at Manhyia hospital, we have two on admission. There has not been any reported new case.”

The police administration is yet to confirm the death toll and the number of casualties, but some residents particularly women and children have fled the area.

Six arrested for attempting to smuggle weapons into Yunyoo

On Friday December 8, 2017, six suspected arms smugglers including a woman, were arrested for attempting to smuggle six pump action guns and 130 cartridges into Yunyoo.

The suspects are in police custody for further investigations.

Disagreements over the location of the capital of the yet to be created Yunyoo district is causing fear and panic around the Bunkprugu enclave.

Some are proposing Namong to be the capital, whilst others are pushing for Bunkprugu.

Narrating the incident, Deputy Director of NADMO, Abu Ramadan, told Citi News that “the canoe apparently did not have a paddle so the guy was using a cutlass to paddle himself across the water and this is a very wide river . The canoe was also leaking.”

“The Police medical team came to inspect and certify that the cause of death was drowning so they gave them permission to bury and when we left too, we made sure we left some safety jackets behind.”

In May 2016, a similar incident occurred in the Volta Region , leading to the death of six children.

The incident happened when the boat which was from Nantwekope and heading towards Yeji hit a tree stump and in the process capsized.

Ghana has experienced several of such disasters on the Volta Lake in times past.

Confirming the incident to Citi News, the Deputy Communications Director for the Hajj Board, Hajia Marian Cissey, noted that “so far we have lost three pilgrims; two being women and one man.”

The two women died in their sleep, while the third person, a man, suffered a medical condition and died at the hospital.

Hajia Cissey noted that, the man was suffering from a condition before he embarked on the trip.

“The medical experts told us that the patient was already involved in an accident and the condition was being managed and he was on medication. So when he got here, I think that due to how stressful the whole spiritual exercise is, he suffered from internal bleeding in the brain.”

The Hajj is an annual Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca, the most holy city for Muslims, and is considered a mandatory religious duty for Muslims that must be carried out by all adult Muslims who are physically and financially capable of undertaking the journey, at least once in their lifetime.

The pilgrimage has often recorded deaths sometimes due to stampede and other factors.

Mecca, particularly in the summer, has a brutal climate which strains the body due to high heat, and the fact that the rites of the pilgrimage require a great deal of movement with massive crowding, it takes a toll on older people.

Also, the belief that if one dies while performing Hajj means a straight shot to heaven encourages those in extremely poor health to play it safe (in the spiritual sense) by playing it unsafely (in the physical sense).

Eyewitnesses said, the two lovers were heard yesterday [Tuesday] engaged in one of their usual fierce fights in the room and the man was later lying in a pool of blood at their doorstep.

The deceased Francis Dzodogbe believed to be in his early 40s was pronounced dead after being rushed to the hospital.

The incident occurred in a house at the Mawuli Gate suburb  of Ho where they both live. It is unclear what ensued between the two but neighbours claim the suspect, Precious Doku is fond of wielding sharp devices during their fights.

She was said to have inflicted knife wounds on the deceased a month ago.

The Police who are carrying out investigations into the case said blood stains were spotted on the floor of the room together screw drivers and a knife.  There were also indications of struggle in the room.

The body of the deceased has since been deposited at the Ho Municipal Hospital mortuary.
