Tributes have been pouring in for superstar Bollywood actress Sridevi Kapoor, who has died aged 54.

The actress, known simply as Sridevi, died of a heart attack on Saturday while at a family wedding in Dubai.

Over five decades, she featured in almost 300 films, including classics Mr India, Chandni, ChaalBaaz and Sadma.

She was considered one of the very few Indian female superstars capable of huge box office success without the support of a male hero.

Top Bollywood figures, sporting giants and leading politicians reacted with shock, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was “saddened” by her death.

Crowds gathered outside Sridevi’s home in Mumbai as news emerged.

A spokesperson for Sridevi’s husband, who is the producer Boney Kapoor, told the Indian news agency Asian News International that her body would be flown from Dubai to Mumbai on Monday.

Why was she such a huge box office draw?

Sridevi worked in films in the Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi languages.

Her acting career began at the age of four and by 13 she was cast in the adult role of a complicated woman avenging her lover’s death.

Sridevi debuted as a lead actress in a Bollywood film in 1978, soon becoming one of India’s biggest film stars.

The actress decided to take a break from the film industry after the release of Judaai in 1997.

She made a comeback in 2012, starring in English Vinglish.

In 2013, the Indian government awarded her the Padma Shri – the fourth highest civilian honour.

She was considered one of the very few Indian female superstars capable of huge box office success without the support of a male hero.

How did she die?

The actress was in the United Arab Emirates to attend the wedding of her nephew, Mohit Marwah.

Her husband and daughter, Khushi, were with her when she passed away on Saturday, reports say.

Her brother-in-law, Sanjay Kapoor, said it had happened at about 23:00 local time (19:00 GMT), according to news site The Indian Express.

He did not provide any further details.

A 39-year old Midwife with the Suntreso Government Hospital in Kumasi has been found dead in her room at Ayeduase close to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), at about 7:30 pm on Tuesday, 20th February, 2018.

According to mother of the deceased, the body of Samira Ofori Antwi was found lying in a horizontal position on her wooden bed in a pool of blood when she entered the room.

The mother had come from Accra to visit her daughter who is working in Kumasi.

She said there was a kitchen knife lying close to the body with blood stains on it.

The deceased’s brother, who is also head of the family, Victor Adu, told Citi News that the family received the death of his sister with shock. He said the family has reported the incident to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Police station for police officers to convey the body from the room.

Mr. Adu ruled out foul play and said his sister could have died from possible suicide.

“From what I see, it is not something I can suspect anyone of my sister’s death. Everyone has their own problem on this earth. Some will worry about money, others will worry about barrenness and some also with their inability to get married. So how I see my sister to be quiet, she also has something to worry about. So if she can worry about something and died this way, maybe she feels that will be better. So we can only leave that in the hands of God.”

He further said the deceased has no grudge with anyone in the family or in the area she resides. He indicated that the family has begun processes for the burial and funeral rites.

The KNUST District Police Command confirmed the incident and said it is investigating an unnatural death.

The police said it is unable to state the cause of death until an autopsy is conducted on the body.

The body was conveyed by police and deposited at the Emena Hospital mortuary pending autopsy.

A student of Damongo Senior High School in the West Gonja district of the Northern Region is reported to have died while 12 others are currently on admission at the Damongo District Hospital.

The cause of the death is yet to be established.

[contextly_sidebar id=”m0w53ZwhHfcLt5A2Izig6avQ1jomJRBM”]Citi News sources at the Damongo district hospital confirmed the incident but the school authorities have so far remained tight-lipped on the situation there.

The situation has reportedly caused fear and panic among continuing students.

This latest health scare comes on the back of the deaths of four students of Kumasi Academy in the Ashanti Region.

The pandemic strain of influenza type A, H1N1 2009 also known as Swine Flu was detected in some students of the school and is believed to be related to the deaths.

Aside from the four deaths, 32 students have also been hospitalised.

Respiratory samples sent to the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research also indicated that there was an outbreak of an acute respiratory infection which the Health Ministry has since attributed as the cause of some of the deaths.

The whole student population had to be administered with antibiotics as part of a prophylaxis after which the school was fumigated

However, no definite cause of the student deaths has as yet been declared.

Another school that has had to deal with a health situation in recent days is the Koforidua Technical School, where a second-year science student who passed away over the weekend, was confirmed to have died from Meningitis.

However, health officials in both the Ashanti Region and the Eastern Region have insisted that they have contained the situation schools and have assured the public of their commitment to ensuring the safety of the students.

The Eastern Regional Director of Health Services, Dr. Charity Sarpong told Citi News: “I must say that currently, everything is calm in the school because we have given them the necessary support, they know what to look out for, they also have our contact numbers so that when there is something we will be immediately contacted for the necessary support.”

Addressing the outbreak in KUMACA, the Ashanti Regional Health Director, Dr. Emmanuel Tenkorang, said: “So far so good. Since yesterday there has not been any new case and so far we have 11 students on admission. Three are on admission at the KNUST hospital. Komfo Anokye has one on admission. At Kumasi South hospital, there are five on admission and then Manhyia hospital, two on admission. There has not been any reported new case.”

Former Hearts of Oak, Asante Kotoko, Aduana Stars and Inter Allies head coach, Herbert Addo, has died after a period of illness. He was 66.

Addo, who retired from active coaching in 2016, was one of the nation’s most decorated coaches with a career that lasted close to 40 years.

He helped Aduana Stars to their one and only league title in 2010, but before that, he won titles with Hearts of Oak in 2002, Asante Kotoko in 1988, and AshGold (then Goldfields in 1995 and 1996).

Apart from club work, he had spells with the Black Meteors, Black Satellites, and the Black Stars.

He also coached and won titles in Gabon and Togo.

His last coaching job was with Inter Allies for the 2013/2014 season. He guided them to the final of the MTN FA Cup that year, but they lost to the Porcupine Warriors.

He moved to Hearts of Oak in 2014, but was fired two years later amid issues of non-payment of player salaries and bonuses.

Addo’s time in coaching produced some very notable records. He won the league with Aduana with an unbeaten home record.

His Hearts of Oak of 2002 had the league’s top scorers, Bernard Dong Bortey and Charles Taylor. They both had 18 goals.

The same Hearts team racked 78 points- the highest in the history of the Ghanaian league- and won 25 of their 30 matches.

He was named SWAG Coach of the Year in 1987 and Coach of the Year in 2009/2010.

A 12-year-old child has died of brain cancer several months after Turkish border agents seized his and his parents’ passports at İstanbul Atatürk Airport, causing the family to abandon their plans to receive cancer treatment in Cuba.

According to a series of tweets posted by Turkish journalist Sıtkı Özcan on Tuesday, the family’s passports were seized at the border because of alleged links to the Gülen movement, which the Turkish government accuses of masterminding a coup attempt on July 15, 2016.

“There was a kid. 12 years old. Had brain cancer. Doctor said he had 30 days left. The family had not lost hope and found a chance for treatment in Cuba,” tweeted Özcan on Tuesday, adding:

“As a last-ditch effort, the family went to the airport to take their son to Cuba. But their passports, including that of the child, were seized. They were not allowed to leave Turkey for the treatment,” Özcan tweeted.

According to the journalist, even though the parents “begged” border security to allow their child to leave, the plea was denied.

“The family begged: ‘Please, let our son go and receive treatment.’ Yet, it didn’t happen. They did not let the child leave,” Özcan said in another tweet.

“Because the child was not allowed to leave, the cancer advanced. First, part of his face became paralyzed, and then he experienced loss of his vision,” Özcan added.

Özcan ended his tweets by “congratulating the Turkish authorities” for causing the death of a 12-year-old child by not letting him receive cancer treatment abroad.

“And the child you [Turkish officials] prevented from leaving the county passed away today. Furkan is no longer with us. Be proud!” (Turkey Purge)
