The Ghana Police service today [Thursday] March 1, 2018, reassigned some of its senior personnel.

In all, 11 reassignments were made according to a statement signed by the Director-General of Police Public Affairs, ACP David Eklu.

The statement said Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, Director General of Police Operations, will now head the Police Research and Planning Department.

He is to be replaced immediately by the Eastern Regional Police Commander, DCOP Simon Afeku.

Rev. David Nenyi Ampah-Benin, Central Regional Commander is now the Director-General of Police Special Duties.

The massive shake-up in the police service comes on the back of calls from the public for more police action in the face of a surge in armed robbery cases in the country, particularly day-light robberies.

Robbers on rampage

Mobile money vendors and forex bureaux appear to be most the targeted in the recent operations of the robbers.

On Tuesday, there were two robbery attacks in the North Kaneshie area which left some persons injured.

A Lebanese businessman was on Wednesday shot and killed by a group of armed robbers in broad daylight at the Tema Industrial Area after he withdrew some amount of money from a bank. The robbers made away with GH¢200,000 in that operation.

There have also been a number of robbery attacks in some parts of Accra and Koforidua in recent days.

The Director-General in Charge of Operations of the Ghana Police Service, COP George Akuffo Dampare has assured Ghanaians of the readiness and commitment of the police administration to provide them with maximum security and protection in the wake of rising crime rates.

During a three-day working visit to the Brong Ahafo Region, he issued a stern warning to criminals in the country to reform or face the full rigors of the law.

The region has experienced some high profile crimes including  robbery on the Kintampo Buipe highway which claimed the life of one and left four others with various degrees of injuries.

The visit took Dr. Dampare to Kintampo, Babator, Tahiru Akuraa, Buipe, Atebubu, Yeji, Kwame Danso and Kojokrom.

The visit was to afford COP Dampare the opportunity to assess the trouble spots, and assess the security situation on the ground and strategies put in place by the local Police to deal with issue.

He also used the visit to facilitate community engagement to enhance the community-police rapport to build the confidence of community members play informants role to help police with information on the hideouts of the criminals.

The Director-General of Operations in an interaction with the senior police officers and district commanders in Sunyani, Kintampo, Atebubu, Yeji and Kwame Danso tasked them to be professional and discharge their duties without fear or favour.

He assured them that the Police Administration was putting in measures to address all their logistical and manpower challenges to enable them combat crime.

He said the introduction of operational strategies in the service was part of the Police transformational agenda that was yielding results in the big cities will be replicated across the country and encouraged the officers to be proactive and preventive in their strategies since the challenges of the region was highway robberies and not inner-city robberies.

He disclosed the National SWAT and National Counter-Terrorism Unit (CTU) had been deployed to the area to augment their efforts in the fight against armed robbery, crimes and maintain law and order and tasked the officers to collaborate effectively to succeed.

Meeting with GPRTU

He assured the leadership of the GPRTU that the police administration was working to rid the country of criminals and appealed to them to assist and collaborate with the police by providing timely and credible information on criminals and their activities.

He expressed the commiseration of the IGP and the Police Administration to residents, family of the deceased and the GPRTU for their loss and tasked them to remain vigilant and expose criminals in the community in fighting the rising crime menace.

Kwame Danso

At Kwame Danso, district capital of the Sene West, the District Chief Executive (DCE) Hon. John Nyaba promised to provide accommodation and fuel to enable them discharges their duties effectively and requested for more personnel to be posted to the area to help beef up the security situation of the area.

He outlined the assembly’s plan to provide the police with motorbikes and construct Police posts at robbery prone areas to help curb the menace.

The Director General of Police Operations on his part commended the DCE for his kind gesture and assured the Police will do everything possible to ensure citizens are protected.

COP/Dr. George Akuffo Dampare has since left for the Ashanti Region where he is expected to hold similar engagement with the Police Command in the region.

The Inspector General of Police, David Asante Appeatu has carried out another reshuffle among senior officers of the Service.

Among the officers who have been affected is the Director General of ICT, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, who has now been appointed as the Director General of Operations.

Dr. Dampare replaces COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno who has now been appointed the Director General in charge of Special Duties.

COP Prosper Ablorh who is currently the Director General, Special Duties has been appointed the Director General Welfare.

ACP Anthony Aidoo has also been appointed the Director General, ICT.

The changes according to the IGP, takes immediate effect.

In June, the IGP transferred the longest serving Public Affairs Director of the Police Service, SP Cephas Arthur from the Police Headquarters to serve as the Commander of the East Legon District Command.

38 other senior police officers were reassigned in that reshuffle.

The Inspector General of Police, IGP, has reshuffled senior police officers, transferring COP Kofi Boakye and COP  George Dampare to the National Headquarters.

COP Kofi Boakye, who is the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, will now become the new Director of Research and Planning, a position currently held by COP Rose Bio Atinga.

As part of the shake-up, COP Rose Bio Atinga, will now become the Director General, Technical.

The Commandant of the Police Command and Staff College at Winneba, COP Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, is headed to Accra to be the new Director General of ICT, a post previously held by the current IGP.

COP Ransford Ninson, who is the Director General, Administration, has now been appointed the Director General, Welfare, whiles COP James Oppong-Boanuh, Director General Services, has been appointed as the Director General Administration.

A lot of changes have also been made at the regional command level. The Director General, Special Duties, DCOP Osabarima Oware Asare Pinkro III has now been appointed as the new Accra Regional Police Commander.

The current commander of the Accra Regional Police Command ACP Timothy Yosa Bonga, has now been moved to head the Inspection Unit.

DCOP David Ampah-Bennin, Director-General/PIPS, has also been appointed the Central Regional Police Commander.

DCOP Isaac Ken Yeboah, the Northern Regional Police Commander, is now the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, whilst DCOP George Tuffuor, Director of the Education and Training Directorate, has been transferred to head the Tema Regional Police Command.

The Upper West Regional Police Commander, DCOP Kwasi Mensah-Duku, has now been appointed the Western Regional Police Commander.

The IGP has also appointed ACP Nana Asomah Hinneh, who is currently the Deputy Volta Regional Police Command to head the Command in the region.

DCOP Kwame Tachie-Poku, who is currently the Central Regional Police Command, has now been moved to the Brong Ahafo Region to head the command there.

The new Director of PIPS, is DCOP Simon Yaw Afeku, who was the Upper East Regional Commander. The newly appointed Upper East Regional Commander is DCOP Vincent Redeemer Dedjoe.

The Director General of the MTTD, ACP Patrick Adusei Sarpong, has now been moved to the Northern Region to head the command in the region. ACP Kwadwo Boapea Otchere, has now been appointed as the new Upper West Regional Commander.

Kofi Boakye promoted to rank of Commissioner of Police 

DCOP Nathan Kofi Boakye, whiles serving as the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, was in June 2016, promoted to the rank of Commissioner of Police by President John Dramani Mahama.

Mr. Kofi Boakye, a lawyer, is respected in law enforcement circles, and has received many commendations notably from the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for his work particularly in the Ashanti Region.

COP George Akuffo Dampare in May 2016, was also transferred to head the Police Command and Staff College at Winneba in the Central Region, while he was serving as the Accra Police Commander.

New IGP makes first shake-up; COP Agblor moved

The new acting Inspector General of Police (IGP), David Asante-Apeatu, on January 27, made his first changes at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Police Service, a unit he once headed.

The Director-General of the CID, COP Prosper Agblor, was moved to head the Special Duties Department as the Director General, and his Deputy, ACP Dennis Ako-Dem,also moved to the Special Duties Department.

DCOP Bright Oduro, who was the Director General;Welfare, was appointed Director General of the CID.

ACP Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo Danquah, who previously headed the police command and staff college, and moved to the ministries divisional police command, and finally at PIPS within a space of seven months, was appointed second in command at the CID.
