The Damongo Agric College in the West Gonja District of the Northern Region has been temporarily shutdown.

Students of the College for the past three weeks have boycotted lectures in protest over their unpaid allowances.

[contextly_sidebar id=”GsghnA1rb735uXZYVtpCdZOREGeTbeWu”]This follows a similar protest by their colleagues of the Kwadaso Agric College in the Ashanti Region, and other parts of the country.

Vice Principal of the Damongo College of Agric, Abdulai Mohammed, in a Citi News interview bemoaned the situation, and asked government to fix the problem.

“Our students are currently agitating for restoration of their allowances by the government, and for that matter they decided that may be one of the ways to see government to listen to them is to vacate campus.”

According to him, lecturers and office staff continue to report at work for other duties.

“This is the third week running, but staff and all lecturers are on campus and they are doing their normal duties, except that lectures are not ongoing just because of the absence of the students.”

He said authorities cannot manage the situation, saying, “We are actually helpless in the sense that, the decision that they took is a nationwide one, and that is what their union (ASU) has asked them to do.”

“On our part, we are ready to teach, but then once they are not there we can only attend to some other administrative duties. It is not the best of situations for us, but we still going on with the other activities around.”

It will be recalled that students of the Kwadaso Agric College also deserted their classrooms in protest of government’s failure to restore their allowances.

Earlier, some selected students of the nation’s five Colleges of Agric besieged the premises of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA), and demanded the immediate release of their allowances.

The Ministry of Agriculture in an attempt to persuade them, announced that it had tabled before Cabinet the students’ request.

However, there are no updates of a possible restoration of the allowances, forcing the students to boycott lectures until further notice.

The feuding factions of two Konkomba clans fighting over chieftaincy and land related issues at Biriyamba and Yiyamba in the Gushiegu district have signed a peace pact.

Signing a bond of good behaviour, they resolved to end the conflict and co-exist peacefully for meaningful development to triumph in their deprived communities.

The peace pact was signed at the end of a meeting between leaders of the two feuding factions and the seven member committee set up by the Northern Regional Security Council (RECSEC) to resolve the impasse between the two clans whose recent clash caused the death of four whiles several households were completely burnt.

The meeting was held behind closed doors in the office of the Gushiegu District Chief Executive and chaired by Chairman of the RECSEC investigative committee, Alhaji A.B.A Fuseini who doubles as Deputy Northern Regional Minister.

He commended them for smoking the peace pipe with the anticipation that the conflict will never resurrect.

Alhaji A.B.A Fuseini reiterated the need for them to engage in productive ventures to uplift the image of their communities.

He also encouraged parents to invest in their children’s education to enable them become responsible citizens.

The Sagnarigu constituency Legislator advised the mass media to be circumspect in their reportage on conflict situations especially in the Northern Region.

On behalf of government, Alhaji A.B.A Fuseini donated relief items to both sides of the chieftaincy divide for the upkeep of the surviving residents who have been rendered homeless.

Assemblyman for Katani electoral area where the two communities are located, Ngmariba Ibrahim praised his people for the ceasefire.

He made a passionate appeal to the only four teachers who fled the community during the renewed clash to return to the classroom.

Member of Parliament for Gushiegu, Hon. Thomas Nassah pleaded with his kinsmen to re-channel their resources into their children’s education and stop what he described as the unwarranted conflict.

Leaders of the two feuding factions attributed the cause of the conflict to disputed farmlands but Citi News external sources revealed that the dispute was chieftaincy related which started in 2012.

The troubled Biriyamba and Yiyamba Konkomba communities lack basic amenities such as clean drinking water, electricity, telecommunication networks, roads and school infrastructure.

The Northern Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has set up a seven member committee to investigate the renewed communal clash between two feuding Konkomba clans in the Gushiegu district.

Within a limited time frame, the committee has been tasked to establish the ambiguity surrounding the renewed communal clash between two Konkomba clans at Biriyamba and Yiyamba settlements in the Gushiegu district.

The committee is headed by Deputy Northern Regional Minister, Alhaji A.B.A Fuseini who doubles as the Member of Parliament for Sagnarigu constituency.

Other members of the committee include the three regional security commanders, District Chief Executive for Gushiegu and Members of Parliament for Gushiegu and Yunyoo who are both Konkombas.

The committee’s report is expected to ascertain the real cause of the renewed clash which might help REGSEC to determine the wayforward.

Northern Regional Police Commander, DCOP Ken Yeboah on Saturday May, 31 visited the two troubled Biriyamba and Yiyamba farming on a fact finding mission.

In a Citi News interview, he said there was nobody to talk to since residents there have fled to unknown destinations.

Describing the parcel of land in question the feuding factions fought over, DCOP Ken Yeboah said the renewed clash was needless.

He called for dialogue in all conflict prone areas in the entire northern region to move the area forward in the right direction.

Three persons were reported dead whilst several households were torched during the recent clash.

Preliminary reports indicated that the combatants engaged in a fearless gun battle over a parcel of farmland.
