The first ever Ghana Cyber security awareness workshop, hosted at the African Regent Hotel, Accra, on Wednesday, July 19, 2017,

It was a full-house as more than 50 delegates from various private and public sector organizations turned up for the all-day workshop, thus confirming the belief that Corporate Ghana is concerned about cyber crimes and definitely takes cyber security very seriously.

Following sharp increases in cyber-crimes and cyber security breach incidents worldwide, Delta3 International (a Ghana based Information Security Advisory Company with head office in UK) decided to organise a series of Cyber Security Awareness Workshops in collaboration with the Ghana Ministry of Communications.

According to Delta3 Managing Partner, Mr. Del Aden, employees are a company’s greatest asset, but also its greatest security risk. Even with millions spent on security infrastructure, all it takes is one employee clicking on one wrong link to compromise critical data and information systems. As such the best way to make sure your employees will not make costly errors is to consistently train them. “Once a year (annual) training is no longer enough”- W. Simpson, COO of (ISC)2.

In delivering the workshop, Mr. Aden further highlighted several current attack vectors and the associated mitigating behavior, thus equipping participants with the necessary knowledge on how best to enhance cyber security and protect corporate data within their various organizations.

He reiterated that the main objective of these workshop series is to enable participants to learn how to safely protect themselves and their organizations from security risks and possible cyber attacks. They will also be able to identify many of the common risks associated with using computers, mobile devices and the internet. To successfully protect information assets, employees at every level – from the top down – need a basic understanding of the current threat landscape, as well as their respective responsibilities in protecting their organisations information assets.

On his part, the Deputy Minister for Communications, Vincent Odotei, opened the session with a short speech, emphasising the need for corporate Ghana to embrace the workshop series by sending all their employees to the regular monthly workshop as research has shown that non-I.T employees are the weakest link when it comes to cyber security.

He further highlighted some of the work his ministry was doing to ensure cyber security and data protection in Ghana/West Africa region. He concluded by stating that: “enhancing cyber security and protecting critical information infrastructures are essential to our nation’s security and the economic well-being of the country.”

Next workshop date in Accra is slated for 20th September, 2017
