The Northern Regional Police Command on Tuesday night, conducted a swoop in Tamale and arrested 23 suspected criminals, including some alleged sex workers.

Six women, believed to be Nigerians, who operated at nightclubs in Tamale, a wee peddler and others suspected of various nefarious crimes in the metropolis, were among those arrested.

Public Relations Officer of the Northern Regional Police Command, ASP Mohammed Yussif Tanko, who briefed the press about the arrest in Tamale on Wednesday, said investigations were still ongoing to process the suspects for court.

ASP Yussif Tanko said the swoop formed part of activities by the Regional Police Command to ensure that all kinds of criminal activities within the Tamale Metropolis were halted to protect lives and property during the Christmas festivities.

He noted that business activities were expected to increase as Christmas was approaching, adding that the rate of crime was also expected to rise as criminals looked to take advantage tofu the period to swindle and rob individuals of their property.

ASP Yussuf Tanko assured the general public of the full commitment of the Police to arrest all criminal elements and to curb all criminal activities in the Region to enable people embark on their legitimate activities.

A Kumasi Circuit Court, presided over by Mrs. Mary Nsenkyire, has remanded in prison a man allegedly caught with 240.35 grams of marijuana.

Yaw Frimpong, 28, is facing a charge of possessing narcotic drug without lawful authority and had pleaded not guilty.

He was ordered by the court to make his next appearance on Thursday, May 11.

Police Chief Inspector Timothy Amoako told the court that the accused was arrested at Afrancho, near Kumasi, by officers of the Police Drug Enforcement Unit on December 18, 2015.

He was found carrying the dried leaves in a black polythene bag and was seized together with the leaves.

Frimpong, the prosecution said, told investigators that a man, nicknamed “No-fuck-am” was his source of supply but could not lead them to his place to arrest him.

Laboratory test has confirmed that the stuff was indeed marijuana.

The trial Judge asked the prosecution to speed up things for the case to begin since the Attorney-General had already given its advice.

An Accra Circuit Court on Thursday handed a 15-year jail sentence to one Kwame Asong, for robbing two persons of their three mobile phones, backpack, one purse and an amount of GHc250.00.

Kwame pleaded not guilty, but after trial, was found guilty by the court presided over by Mr Aboagye Tandoh.

He is to serve 15 years in prison with hard labour to serve as a deterrent to other young people who have resorted to cheap means of acquiring wealth.

In sentencing, the court said it took into consideration the convict’s plea for mitigation, the period spent in custody.

Earlier, the prosecution, Chief Superintendent of Police, Duuti Tuaruka, told the court that the complainants in the case were students of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), but reside at Kasoa ,while Kwame is a fisherman who resides at Oshiyie, near Kokrobite in Accra.

He said on July 10, 2016, the two students visited the Oshiyie beach to have fun and while on their way back home, Kwame and two others attacked them.

“Armed with a beer bottle, they subjected the students to severe beatings and robbed them of their items and bolted,’’ he said.

The prosecution said they robbed them of two mobile phones worth GH¢400, one backpack worth GH¢25 and GH¢250 cash.

Chief Superintendent Tuaruka said the complainants raised an alarm and with the help of others at the beach, the convict was apprehended after a chase, but his accomplices managed to escape.

He was handed over to the police and during investigations; the three mobile phones and the purse were retrieved.

A young man believed to be in his early 30s has been arrested by the Kibi Police command for posing as a personnel of the Ghana Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

He was arrested at a hotel in the Abuakwa South district of the Eastern Region upon a tip-off.

The suspect, according to residents have been molesting and extorting money from residents in and around Bunso junction.

Confirming the arrest to Citi News, the Kibi Municipal Police Commander DSP Mariam Osei-Adu, said the suspect arrived in the town some three months ago and told residents he was in to investigate a murder case.

DSP Osei-Adu added that the police was processing him for court.

“We got the information that the gentleman, in his early 30s was going around telling people that he is a CID officer. When he arrived at the place some three months ago and rented a place at Bunso. According to residents, he said he was a CID man and he was there purposely to investigate a murder case. I think the people in observing him clearly and from his conversation and actions, suspected that he was not a CID officer so they alerted the police. He is now in custody and we are preparing him for court.”

The police rely heavily on tip-offs and reports on suspicious characters within the community to bust imposters.

The police have struggled in the past few years to deal with persons who pose as military and police officers and molest citizens.

Some of these imposters also promise jobs and other essential services and abscond after receiving huge sums of money from their victims.
