A welder, Kweku Sefa, popularly known as Pusher, is to spend a year jail term after an Accra Circuit Court on Wednesday found him guilty on the charges of defrauding by false pretenses.

Sefa is said to have defrauded Edward Ofori, a businessman of GHc60,000.00, under the pretext of providing him with two boxes of so-called pipe joint sealants used mainly by engineers, but were however found not to be genuine.

The Court further ordered Sefa to pay an outstanding balance of GHc49,000.00 to the complainant, Mr. Ofori.

Prosecuting Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Agnes Boafo, said the complainant resides at East Legon in Accra.

In February this year, Sefa, who introduced himself as Agyemang and Cisse, approached the complainant to supply him two boxes of the so-called products.

The complainant gave the convict GHc60,000.00, and when he went to check, the products were found not to be genuine.

A report was made to the Police and Sefa was arrested at a drinking spot at Ayawaso, near Pokuase.

The prosecution said Sefa explained that he was only asked by one Tugah to collect the amount on his behalf, and that he only got GHc5,000.00 as his share.

Gideon Galle, a 32-year-old Kente Weaver, has been sentenced to 25 years imprisonment by an Accra Circuit Court, for defiling two minors in turns at Agbogba in Accra.

This was after Galle had pleaded guilty to two counts of defilement. Galle defiled two victims both aged 12 years after tying them in a room.

The court presided over by Mrs Jane Harriet Akweley Quaye noted that the convict was grown enough and should have gotten married instead of defiling vulnerable girls, an act, the court noted was abominable and stinking.

The case of prosecuting Inspector Judith Asante was that the complainant was a trader and her daughter was the first victim who is currently in class six whilst the other victim was in class five.

According to Inspector Asante the convict reside in the same vicinity with complainant and the two victims.

On September 4, this year at about 20:00 hours whilst both victims were returning home from the complainant’s drinking bar at Abokobi after watching a telenovela, the convict trailed them.

According to prosecution, the convict all along was trailing the victims until they got home. The first victim gave their apartment key to the second victim to open the door whilst she urinated behind the house and joined her.

The prosecutor said as soon as the second victim opened the door, the convict, secretly entered the house and hid in the kitchen. After urinating, the first victim entered the apartment and locked the trap door.

Galle came out from the kitchen and tied her hands to her back with a rope and covered her mouth with a rag and did same thing to the second victim who attempted to check on her colleague.

Prosecution said Galle then pulled the two victims to the hall and had sex with them in turns on a mattress on the floor.

After the act, Galle untied them and offered them GHc10.00 to purchase a long broom which got destroyed after the first victim tried to hit his head with it whilst Galle was having sex with the second victim.

Galle also warned the victims not to disclose the act to anyone else he will kill them. The victims who could not stand the ordeal informed the complainant who reported the incident to the Police.

A day after reporting the incident, the complainant spotted the convict and she raised an alarm and Galle was nabbed.

A bar attendant alleged to have strangled a 38-year-old woman and setting her on fire at Alajo in Accra was yesterday remanded in custody by the Abeka District Court.

The accused, Godwin Tetteh, has been charged with murder for the alleged incident which is said to have happened in his room on April 25, 2017.

The prosecution claims Tetteh intentionally set his room on fire after the alleged incident to cover up his act.

Bail application

Tetteh is before the Abeka District Court for committal proceeding, a process which would enable the court to determine whether or not the charges and evidence against him warrant a trial at the High Court.

His appearance at the court attracted a crowd made up of mostly family members and sympathisers of the alleged victim.

The family and sympathisers were clad in red clothes and wore red arm and headbands to signify how sorrowful they were.

At the hearing, Tetteh’s  legal team made a passionate appeal to the court to grant him bail.

According to his lawyer, Mr James Owura-Mensah, the charge levelled against his client did not support the facts of the case as presented by the prosecution.

He described the facts as inaccurate, adding that his client was “deemed innocent until proven guilty.’’

“The accused person is a victim of circumstances and not in any way connected to the murder,’’ he said.

Counsel further urged the court to grant the accused bail because of  the Supreme Court judgement on May 5, 2016 that made all offences bailable, subject to the discretion of a competent court of jurisdiction.

He also stated that his client was gainfully employed with a fixed place of abode and had competent people to stand surety for him.

No jurisdiction

The court, presided over by Ms Victoria Akua Ghansah, however, refused to grant bail because of lack of jurisdiction.

District courts, the presiding magistrate said, were not trial court for murder cases and hence did not have the jurisdiction to grant bail in such cases.

“Since I don’t have jurisdiction, I cannot grant bail,’’ she said.

She, therefore, advised Tetteh’s legal team to apply for bail at a court of competent jurisdiction in murder cases.

The court then ordered Tetteh to be remanded in prison custody and adjourned the case to June 29, 2017.

Room discussion

The prosecutor, Chief Inspector Hanson Armah, told the court that Tetteh and the woman resided in the same house at Alajo, a suburb Accra.

On April 25, 2017, Tetteh, he said, invited the lady to his room for a discussion. Tetteh narrated to her how he gave some items to his friend for safe keeping but the friend later told him that the items had been stolen by his (friend’s) girlfriend.

Tetteh, the prosecutor said, was, therefore, seeking advice from the lady on how to deal with his friend.

“The lady advised him to report the issue to some elders for advice and decided to leave the room,’’ he said.

According to Chief Inspector Armah, immediately the lady stood up, “Tetteh grabbed her from behind and held her neck until she became unconscious.’’

Fire

Chief Inspector Armah said when Tetteh realised that the lady was unconscious, he (Tetteh) set his room on fire “in order to cover his diabolic act.’’ Tetteh then rushed outside shouting for help.

Someone in the house, he said, heard Tetteh shouting, took a bucket of water and dashed into the room, where he heard the lady lying on a burning carpet crying for help.

“The lady sustained severe burns and was rushed to the Maamobi General Hospital for treatment. She was later transferred to the 37 Military Hospital where she died on May 9, 2017,’’ the prosecutor added.
