Dismissed acting General Secretary of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Eric Asani Tano, has launched a scathing attack on the party’s leadership; saying they have rendered the party politically non-viable.

According to him, the party has lost so much credibility such that, it would be surprising for it to qualify for the 2020 general elections.

[contextly_sidebar id=”aF7F4TWZNBTUvVsOlsKOLuwMkaxEjHKJ”]The membership of Eric Tano was revoked by the party’s Central Committee on grounds that he did not vote for the party’s Presidential candidate, Ivor Greenstreet in the 2016 elections.

He also allegedly accused the chairman of the party, Prof. Edmund Delle, of bribing some leaders of the party to victimize persons who speak against wrongdoings within the party.

“What makes the CPP’s issue very stinky is the fact that, those who are not following the constitution and those who have been bought; most of the regional chairmen and the Central Committee members have been bought by Prof. Delle and so they are going all out to as it were expel or humiliate people who are standing for the truth,” he said.

He added that, “As it stands now, under the leadership of Prof. Delle, there is no Convention People’s Party. It is a collapsed party. We have been ridiculed. The chairman’s action since he came into office by suspending and sacking people who have toiled for the party since 2008, so they are trying to push out well meaning people out of the party and then run their own show through corrupt practices. The evidence is clear. They should go and print the party’s account as to whether all the monies used for the campaign. In 2020, if the Electoral Commission certifies this particular party to contest, I’ll be very shocked.”

The Convention People’s Party (CPP), has in the last few decades failed to make significant impact on Ghana’s political terrain following the death of its founder and first president of Ghana, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

The party’s performance in the last two elections have been abysmal with many blaming its chairman and 2016 flagbearer, Dr. Kobina Ivor Greenstreet for the outcome, having allegedly done the bidding of a bigger political party.

But a member of the party, James Kwabena Bomfeh, denied the claims, saying the party is still a formidable political force.

Meanwhile, the party is considering a proposal for merger with the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), which was founded by Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom; a break-away member of the party and former flagbearer, with the hope of boosting its chances in subsequent elections.

The Convention People’s Party (CPP), has on the advice of its Central Committee, revoked the membership of its acting General Secretary, Eric Asani Tano.

The acting General Secretary is said to have campaigned and voted for a candidate other than the party’s candidate in the 2016 elections.

[contextly_sidebar id=”4Yoi4sgbnbMDSncOeDV6uXQTiP99dHdo”]The Party last year suspended its National Youth Organizer and General Secretary, and made Asani Tano Acting General Secretary.

A member of the Party’s Central Committee and Campaign Strategist in the last elections, Kwabena Bomfeh Jnr, told Citi News the action against Mr Asani Tano was taken based on his own plea.

He said, “It is about the party invoking a clause in the constitution in recognition of a decision he had made by ceasing his membership of the party by going public to say he voted for a candidate other than the candidate of the party, and also saying that he was advocating to his constituents to vote against the decision of the congress which is the highest body of the party.”

He added that “so per his own actions and his own utterances and act, per Article 17 Clause 24 , he ceases to be a member. He appeared before the central committee and agreed to the issues that had been raised. He confirmed them.”

Following the 2016 general elections and the subsequent declaration of the winner, not much has been heard from the CPP after it failed to make a significant impact in the elections.

The Convention People’s Party (CPP), polled just about 0.24% of total valid votes cast. Mr. Bomfeh said the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have in the last two decades in power failed to make Ghana a better place.

But in a separate interview, Mr. Bomfeh said in spite of the defeat, the party is still a formidable political force although he admitted that the party is experiencing some internal issues.

“The CPP has a responsibility. We cannot afford to continue to make ourselves a laughing stock. This is a giant party with potential energy. So phenomenal that all we need is to get our acts right, it doesn’t matter the differences we share because we are all human beings,” he said

A former youth leader of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), James Kwabena Bomfeh, has said the party is still a formidable political force contributing to national development.

According to him, many have misconstrued the role of political parties to “shouting the loudest and drawing the most numbers” saying that the CPP remains relevant as a political party contributing and critiquing policy decisions aimed at developing the country.

[contextly_sidebar id=”iMCSmHcWMmnMl7gO0MekZNLBE8yKhzUa”]Following the 2016 general elections and the subsequent declaration of the winner, not much has been heard from the various political parties said to be “minor” parties who failed to make a significant impact in the elections.

The Convention People’s Party (CPP) polled just about 0.24% of total valid votes cast.

Mr. Bomfeh said the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have in the last two decades in power failed to honour their campaign promises to Ghanaians.

“Political parties are not just about elections. Parties that have won elections under this 4th republic have all failed to live up to their own promises. Isn’t it a shame that NDC and NPP, 24 years put together their own manifesto, they can’t count up to 10% of achieving them.”

He said the CPP was still contributing its quota to national development, although it is not in power.

“We have been talking about the need for a National Identification System. Every budget since 2009, has been responded to by the CPP, in the shape of press conferences through prepared documents by economic brains that point out the loopholes and the strengths in them, and also suggesting how we expect the government to go to deal with our economic challenges.”

Kwabena Bomfeh further noted that, there is the need for a third political force to break the duopoly in Ghana’s political space created by the NPP and the NDC.

He added that although the CPP may be experiencing some internal issues, it is still a delivering on its mandate as a credible political party in opposition.

He however called on members of the party to help address any internal challenges and make the party vibrant and active.

“The CPP has a responsibility. We cannot afford to continue to make ourselves a laughing stock. This is a giant party with potential energy. So phenomenal that all we need is to get our acts right, it doesn’t matter the differences we share because we are all human beings,” he said.

The leadership of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) say its chances in the upcoming elections will not be affected by the open announcement of its Vice Presidential nominee that he is still a member of the opposition New Patriotic Party.

The Youth League of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) is calling for the immediate removal of the Vice Presidential nominee of the party, Nana Gabby Nsiah Nketia based on his confession on national television he is a card-bearing member of the New Patriotic Party.

According to the League, the announcement undermines the party’s credibility and puts Nana Nketia’s loyalty to the CPP in doubt.

The Secretary of the League told Citi News, “We are quite baffled about how a card-bearing member of another party will be a Vice Presidential candidate our party. We don’t think that is proper. We are asking that he should renounce his membership of the NPP and fully join the CPP or he should be withdrawn immediately,”

But the Director of Communication of the CPP, Issifu Kadiri Abdul Rauf says the confession will not negatively impact on the party’s fortunes.

He said in spite of the confession, the nominee is very committed to the CPP.

“Elections are still won at the polling stations and on the grounds so we have been starling our campaign in such a manner that we go to the people that matter at the grassroots so these kind of allegations that have been leveled against him that he is an NPP is neither here nor there,” he said.

‘Nana Gabby Nsiah Nketia not an NPP member’

Issifu Kadiri Abdul Rauf also said the CPP’s Vice Presidential nominee was not a member of the NPP anymore since the NPP constitution states that members automatically forfeits their membership if they person declares allegiance to another party.

‘CPP chooses Gabby Nketia as running mate’

The Convention People’s Party, (CPP), last week settled on a businessman, Nana Gabby Nketia as the running mate to its presidential candidate Ivor Kobina Greenstreet for the December elections.

Mr. Gabby Nketia, a politician and a businessman, has worked with both the Ghana Armed Forces and the British Army, and is expected to complement the efforts of Mr. Greenstreet, with his international influence to help enhance the party’s chances of winning the elections.
