Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Sportswear manufacturer McKenzie Ghana, Michael Asare Yeboah has appealed to the government for more financial incentives for small and medium companies in the Brong Ahafo region.

This, he said, would enable small and medium-sized companies to create the needed job avenues for growth in the sector.

According to him, investment in that subsector was neglected last year, due government’s failure to award the contract for the manufacture of school uniforms and sports kits to them under the Free SHS Programme.

This has brought about the increment of cost production in the sector.

“We really went through some financial difficulties last year when the government’s directive did not award our companies with schoolhouse jerseys and sports kits contract. I am making an appeal to the government to intervene to avoid job cuts and redundancy” he explained.

He, therefore, appealed to business owners and residents from the area to offer job opportunities to the youth by investing in them and giving them entrepreneurship skills.

Mr Asare Yeboah made this known as an end-of-year party organized by his outfit to take stock of their activities during the year and plan their way forward.

“We have to believe and invest in our youth in the region because they are equally gifted as those in the big cities. We also have to give contracts to the manufacturing companies in the region for they are capable of producing quality products which meet the international standards, no wonder we won an award at last year’s AGI awards” he appealed.

He reiterated his commitment to employ the youth in the region and offer them free training in farming, fashion and design.

McKenzie Clothing was awarded at the 2017 Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) awards as the best company in Garments, Textiles and Leather.

62 organisations have been surcharged by the Auditor for receiving payments from the state without any documentation as proof.

The surcharge certificates totaling GHȻ8,886,791.9101742 cover the period between December 31, 2013 and December 31, 2015.

The companies, mostly private organisations, also include some state institutions and staff of some government agencies.

In a release by the Auditor General’s office, it said that efforts to track down the listed companies have been fruitless forcing them publish their names.

It also advised the organisations or individuals “to contact the Auditor General’s Office, Room 23, New Block, Ministries Block ‘O’, Accra for their certificates not later than 20th December 2017; after which date they shall be deemed to have been duly served.”

Daniel Domelevo, the Auditor General in his recent report to Parliament, indicated his commitment to surcharge anyone or organisation that took monies from the state which they did not deserve.

In exhibiting that determination to recover the wrongfully paid funds back to the state, Mr. Domelevo issued surcharge certificates against them for the period of the audit as indicated against their names in the table below.

Citi News has laid hands on a document naming at least Thirty Eight (38) companies without a National Petroleum Authority (NPA), license, yet the Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation (BOST), sold Twenty Million, Five Hundred and Ninety Thousand (20, 590,000) litres of contaminated fuel to them in 2015 and 2016 respectively.

This means the illegality happened under the leadership of the former BOST Managing Director, Kwame Awuah-Darko, who according to some staff of BOST, is seeking to have his rot covered up by the raging brouhaha over contaminated fuel sale under the new MD.

[contextly_sidebar id=”26y4NtBeKyNHuFcTYm6by680lrxX5c1J”]The revelation comes at a time when the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), has taken issues with BOST for selling 5 million litres of contaminated fuel to two unlicensed companies, Movepiina and Zup Oil, which were allegedly set up few days before the sale.

The NPA has among other things stated that, it will fine the two companies and also take legal action against them, whiles it investigates the claims over the improper sale of the fuel in collaboration with an investigative committee set up by government through the Energy Ministry.

The document sited by Citi News shows that in 2015 alone, between March, April, May, July and August, thirteen firms received different quantities of contaminated fuel from BOST.

In all, 8, 190, 000 litres was sold out, although the profit made is not known.

In 2016 however, the companies that received the fuel were 25 in number, with the quantity of fuel sold standing at 12, 400,000 litres.

Just like the current unit price of Ghc1.00 per litre in the case of Movepiina and Zup Oil, the unit prices for both 2015 and 2016, were between 85 pesewas per litre and Ghc.100 respectively.

Below is the full list of the companies for 2015 and 2016

Background

The story about the alleged sale was first reported by Citi News which sighted documents to that effect.

The African Center for Energy Policy (ACEP), later alleged that the two companies were unlicensed, and registered ten days before the deal. It thus called for the BOST MD to step aside to allow a probe into the matter.

The Minority in Parliament at a news conference, also joined calls for the MD to step aside, stating that the deal was fraught with rot and has caused financial loss to the state.

Gov’t’s investigative committee

Despite the NPA’s initial reports confirming the firms were not licensed, the MD is still at post, whereas an eight-member committee has also been set up by government to probe the sale.

Among other things, it is mandated to determine the circumstances that led to the contamination of the fuel and review the transaction.

The committee will also review the procedures undertaken by BOST to evacuate the product and ascertain the quality and remaining quantity of the product.

The committee will be made up of representatives of; the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), the Tema oil Refinery (TOR), the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA), Bureau of National Investigations, Chamber of Bulk oil Distributors, Association of Oil Marketing Companies, Energy Commission and a representative from the relevant Civil Society Organizations.
