The Presidency has directed all Ministries, Departments and Agencies to undertake a cleanup exercise this [Friday] morning for two hours.

A letter from the Chief of Staff said all staff of MDAs are to participate in the thorough cleaning of their premises from 8:00 am to 10:00 am.

[contextly_sidebar id=”EudYMbaW0Qt0RSvBgsqMEIOTOTQkAHRV”]“In order to ensure the President’s vision to make Accra the cleanest city in Africa, the government has commenced a clean-up campaign to ensure that all parts of the government business district gets rid of filth within that enclave,” the letter stated.

Speaking on this on Eyewitness News, the Sanitation Minister, Kofi Adda, said the exercise is to be a practical demonstration of the government’s commitment to improving sanitation in Accra.

“This is the beginning of the awareness creation among the ministries who constitute the leadership of government business. Once we start it today, we will continue on it and slowly scale up until we are able to get the entire government business cleaned up to the standards we are looking to make Accra the cleanest city.”

According to him, Sanitation Marshals and their deputies are to spearhead to cleaning effort.

These Sanitation Marshals were to be appointed to ensure compliance to sanitation by-laws.

Mr. Adda added that this initiative will continue as long “as it takes to make our city clean.”

“At least every week, ministries would have to be doing that to make sure that everything is done to perfection,” the Minister stated.

The Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA), has began activities leading to the nation’s Independence Day celebration with a clean-up exercise to rid the metropolis of filth.

The exercise, led by the Metropolitan Chief Executive, Felix Mensah Nii Anang-La has market women, security agencies and Zoomlion Ghana workers participating.

They cleaned all the principal streets of Tema, market centres, schools and hospitals.

The 61st independence anniversary was launched in Accra with a focus on keeping Ghana clean to help curb the increasing rate of malaria, cholera and other diseases in the country.

In this regard, Kofi Adda, the Minister of Sanitation, has tasked Regional Ministers, Municipal and Metropolitan Chief Executives to lead the cleanup exercises in their regions and districts.

Addressing the traders and residents at the various locations, Mr. Anang-La expressed concern with the apathetic and lukewarm attitude of some of the people, who only looked on unconcerned whilst others partook in the cleanup exercise.

He said such attitudes did not show respect for authority and likened it to homes where children were disrespectful to their parents.

“Democracy does not mean being disrespectful,” he said, adding that “we all have to join hands to make our surroundings free from mosquitoes and other diseases.”

“I am grateful to the media for the part it played by reminding Ghanaians to actively participate in the exercise. The assembly will enforce the laws on sanitation by arresting and prosecuting offenders and appealed to the courts to impose hefty fines on culprits,” Mr Anang-La said.

The Mayor pleaded with the residents to change their attitudes towards the national sanitation day and actively participate in it, and urged the traders on the pavement to move to the Hawkers’ Market.

Mr. Anang-La warned that with effect from Monday, the Assembly would take a legal action against those who litter the streets.

He appealed to the media to embark on an educational campaign on good sanitation practices to curb the menace of indiscriminate disposal of waste.

He praised personnel of the Military, the Eastern Naval Command, the Ghana Immigration, Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), Police, the Tema Restoration Ambassadors and other youth groups that participated.

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly [AMA] will on Saturday 3rd March, 2018, embark on a massive cleanup exercise in all ten sub-metros of the Assembly.

As such, businesses are expected to be closed between 6:00am and 10:00am to ensure full participation of all in the exercise.

[contextly_sidebar id=”jrLV249trn9DCvj8LXgmnf8jwKn5MU4F”]The movement of commercial vehicles within the areas will also be limited within the period.

According to the Assembly, the move is part of efforts aimed at ensuring cleanliness in Accra, in line with President Akufo-Addo’s vision of making the capital, the cleanest city in Africa by 2020.

“This is just one of the many ways that we have strategized to make sure that Accra indeed becomes clean and everyone must play a part,” Mohammed Adjei Sowah, Metropolitan Chief Executive of the AMA told Citi News.

He added that the Assembly will henceforth enforce its bye-laws on sanitation and will not hesitate to punish anyone or group of persons found to be in violation of the laws.

The last time a similar exercise was carried out in Accra was in December 2017.

‘Sanitation in Accra’

Sanitation in Accra can best be described as one of the worst in the country, despite commitments and pledges to reverse the situation by city authorities.

Reports by Citi FM over the last 6 months revealed that some major roads within the capital were gradually being narrowed due to the regular dumping of refuse along the roads.

The government as part of plans to address the situation, launched the National Sanitation Campaign to undertake series of activities that will eventually make the capital, Accra, the cleanest city in Africa.

As part of the campaign, the President announced a National Sanitation Brigade to enforce sanitation laws nationwide. This brigade, to be made up Ghanaian youth, will police the adherence to the rules and regulations on sanitation in both state and private properties.

“Everyday is Sanitation Day. I recognize, however, that the government cannot do it alone. This is where I wish to call on all of us, especially our Chiefs and Queen Mothers, religious and opinion leaders, civil society organisations, private sector operators, to rise up to the challenge and help make a difference this time around,” President Akufo-Addo said at the launch of the event.

But there has not been any major improvement since the launch of the campaign.
