Pupils of CK Korfe, an island community at Abotaosi in the Biakoye District in the Volta Region, who fail to go to school due to unreliable means of transport to cross the Volta Lake, would now overcome the challenge following an intervention by a philanthropist who has donated of a 20-seater canoe to ease transport on the water.

The pupils, hitherto, were compelled to cross the River on a precarious wooden bridge to school in the main Abotoase Township.

The makeshift bridge according to residents, often submerges or breaks when the river overflows, exposing the lives of the pupils to danger, with most of them staying off until the water subsides.

The situation clearly affects their school attendance and academic performance.

One of the pupils told Citi News that “anytime we want to cross the lake, we have been facing many problems. We sometimes have to remove our uniforms to cross by foot or swim through. The two boats available are often full since other people including traders use them, and anytime the wooden bridge breaks, we have to go back home and not attend school that day.”

Touched by the worrying situation in the area, Mr. Daniel Korsina, a three-time Parliamentary aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the area and a businessman, stepped in to provide a dedicated canoe for the pupils and teachers to use.

He said the gesture would go a long way to ensure the safety of the children and keep them in school, while the government makes efforts to provide a permanent bridge for the communities.

Abotoase is an inland fishing community in the Tapa Traditional Area, and a major town in the Biakoye District of the Volta Region.

His donation, which also coincided with the International Day of the girl child, witnessed a durbar held to commemorate the day with the various speakers present advising parents and other stakeholders in the community, to protect the rights of the girl child, and mold children to become responsible future leaders.

Liverpool have announced that they have reached a deal with Spanish giants Barcelona over the transfer of Luis Suarez to the Catalan club.

In a statement on their official website, the club announced “that Luis Suarez will be leaving the club after a transfer agreement was reached with FC Barcelona.”

It went on to state that the player had the club’s permission to join Barcelona after the necessary formalities had been completed.

The club thanked the player for his three years at the club and wished him and his family “well for the future.”

Barcelona also posted a picture of Suarez in the club’s kit and welcomed him to the club.

Luis Suarez, who still had four years left on his contract at Anfield, will join Barcelona next week for a fee believed to be in the region of 75 million pounds and sign a five-year deal at the club after he completes a medical and agrees personal terms.

Suarez said in a statement that he hoped Liverpool fans would understand why he made the decision to move to Spain.

“This club did all they could to get me to stay, but playing and living in Spain, where my wife’s family live, is a lifelong dream and ambition.

“I believe now the timing is right.

“I am very proud I have played my part in helping to return Liverpool to the elite of the Premier League and in particular back into the Champions League,” he added.

Liverpool manager, Brendan Rodgers, called Suarez “a very special talent” and thanked him “for the role he has played in the team in the past two years, during my time at Liverpool.”

Suarez will become Barca’s second high-profile signing of the summer after the club earlier completed the signing of Ivan Rakitic from Sevilla.

The deal, if confirmed, would make Suarez Barcelona’s most expensive signing ever, eclipsing the £59 million the club paid to sign Swedish forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic from Inter Milan in 2009.

The striker’s future at Anfield had been in doubt and he was the subject of a failed transfer bid from premier league rivals, Arsenal in 2013.

Barcelona’s fierce rivals, Real Madrid were also thought to be interested in signing the controversial forward, but the player has, it seems, opted against a move to the Spanish capital.

Saurez is currently serving a four-month ban from all footballing activity after he was found guilty by FIFA for biting Italian defender Giogio Chiellini in the match between Italy and Uruguay at the World Cup in Brazil.

Suarez scored 82 goals in 133 appearances for the Merseyside club after joining from Ajax in the January transfer window of 2011, including 31 goals last season, helping the club to second place in the league, despite missing the start of the season through suspension.

His goal return last season plus 12 assists, meant he contributed to 43 goals, more than any player in Europe’s top five leagues.

Barcelona aim to strengthen their side, after they finished last season without winning a major trophy, losing in the Spanish cup final to Real Madrid and missing out on the league title to Atletico Madrid on the final day.

Doubt surrounds Luis Suarez’s participation at the World Cup finals after reports that the Uruguay striker has suffered a knee injury in training and will have an operation on Thursday.

Suarez, the PFA and Football Writers’ Player of the Year after scoring 31 goals for Liverpool, is said to have had an MRI scan on Wednesday which showed meniscus damage requiring immediate surgery.

The news was reported by prominent Uruguayan journalist Martin Charquero, who was also the first to reveal that Suarez would sign a new contract with Liverpool in January. He said that Suarez would be operated on at 7:30 a.m. local time.

One tweet stated: “Luis Suárez felt discomfort in today’s training session. Later a scan was carried out, where a meniscus problem was detected.”
