Embattled Deputy General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress, Koku Anyidoho, has discounted claims that the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has officially charged him with treason.

According to him, the CID is still investigating his alleged crime and has not proffered any charges against him.

“I was only in custody and let the records state that I have not been charged. I won’t go into the legality of it but I have not been charged with any offence. The police are still investigating the matter,” he added.

Mr. Anyidoho issued the disclaimer on Citi FM’s current affairs and news analysis programme, The Big Issue today, [Saturday], March 31, 2018.

[contextly_sidebar id=”6pnXcd2FHYhXht4TfDmjXb65c5k9UkME”]Mr. Anyidoho was picked up last Tuesday by the CID for allegedly making some claims on public radio which have been deemed as treasonable.

He had, in an interview on Accra-based Happy FM, indicated that President Akufo-Addo will be overthrown because of the ratification of the controversial defence cooperation agreement between Ghana and the US saying it could spark a “social revolution” in Ghana.

“There will be a civilian coup d’état. There will be a social revolution. We [NDC] are starting it on Wednesday. The movement is starting on Wednesday. Nana Addo will have sleepless nights. He will suffer diarrhoea. He said he wanted to be president, but we will make sure he will be fed up on the seat,’’ he added.

Anyidoho has since been widely condemned for the comments.

He subsequently spent two nights at the custody of the Bureau of National Investigations after which the CID granted him bail on Friday.

Speaking on the Big Issue, Koku Anyidoho blamed the media for misreporting the alleged charges proffered against him by the CID.

“[Whether] mainstream media, social media, let us be all measured in the things that we report. As I came out of detention yesterday, from Graphic, [there were headlines such as] Koku Anyidoho charged. Who charged Koku Anyidoho? It’s sad. Who charged who? Where is the charge?” he fumed.

My detention was an experience

Recounting his confinement at the BNI, he said he was not manhandled, and was not also put in handcuffs as being speculated.

Mr. Anyidoho also described it as an experience saying his respect for the security agencies had gone up because of the professional manner in which they dealt with the case.

“The state said I had to be detained and I was detained; and it allowed me as a politician to begin to accept and respect the police, BNI bigger than ever before.  Not that I ever disrespected them but now they have my greater respect.”

Embattled Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), is expected to reappear before the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) for interrogation on Tuesday, April 3.

Mr. Anyidoho was invited by the CID on Tuesday after he suggested that President Nana Akufo-Addo could be overthrown over the ratification of the controversial defence cooperation agreement between Ghana and the US.

[contextly_sidebar id=”rDYgnAb0b49FVo6PsPWvdbFXJt1dtLTV”]Mr. Anyidoho, after spending two nights in the custody of the BNI over his comments, was granted bail on Friday.

He was released by the CID in the presence of his father, Major General Henry Kwami Anyidoho and his lawyers.

Lawyer for Anyidoho, Victor Adawudu, however indicated on Eyewitness News that his client will report to the CID again on Tuesday.

Explaining circumstances leading to Anyidoho being granted bail, Mr. Adawudu said two eminent citizens of the country stood as surety for his release.

“The bail is a contract between the party that is the state and the suspect, so we had to negotiate the terms and in negotiating the terms, the two parties were able to come to a point where two eminent citizens of this country stood surety for him..We are to report back to the CID on Tuesday .”

Koku Anyidoho

He further pointed out that though his bail currently grants his client some level of freedom, he is expected to abide by the terms of his temporary release.

“After the bail he has his freedom, he has his respite. He can do everything. He can travel, but the sureties will make sure that at the time he should report, he reports.”

Koku not charged

The lawyer also clarified that Anyidoho had not been charged for treason or any other offence as reported earlier.

He indicated that Anyidoho can only be charged after investigations have been completed.

“He has not been charged for any offence. The Police only cautioned and investigated him for an offence of treason. He can only be charged after they finish investigations and they get evidence which will support any charge.”

The Minister of National Security, Albert Kan-Dapaah has told citinewsroom.com that the Director of the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) William Akwasi Appiah has been reassigned and not sacked as is being speculated.

According to him, Mr Appiah has been reassigned to the National Security Ministry.

Earlier reports suggested that Mr Appiah was sacked after a meeting held on Thursday.

But according to Mr. Kan-Dapaah, the move was part of a number of changes at the BNI and the National Security Ministry.

“We haven’t sacked the man. There is nothing like sacking, we didn’t talk about the sacking. Yes, he has been changed. There have been some changes at the Research department and also at the BNI and the National Security Ministry. We’ve moved people around.”

“He’s been moved from BNI to the Ministry of National Security,” Kan-Dapaah said in an interview with citinewsroom.com.

A statement signed by Information Minister, Mustapha Hamid said Mr Appiah will be replaced by the Director-General of Research at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Rasheed Seidu Inusah.

The statement added that Peter Nyarko Opata, who served as deputy to Mr. Seidu Inusah has now taken over as the substantive head of the department at the Foreign Affairs Ministry.

This comes a day after former President John Mahama and a number of officials of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) were allowed access to Koku Anyidoho, who was in the custody of the BNI.

The group took pictures with Anyidoho which went viral on social media.

Mr Anyidoho was picked up by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on Tuesday for making some comments deemed treasonable and was in the BNI custody.

He was subsequently charged with treason and spent two nights in BNI custody.

Mr Anyidoho was granted bail earlier on Thursday.

The embattled Deputy General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho has been granted bail after spending two nights in the custody of the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI).

Mr Anyidoho was released by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), the agency handling the case, in the presence of his father, Major General Henry Kwami Anyidoho and his lawyers.

CitiNewsroom’s Fred Djabanor reported that the conditions under which he was released are immediately not known.

Mr Anyidoho was picked up at the International Press centre on Tuesday for making comments deemed treasonable.

[contextly_sidebar id=”M9HDwW5wNrxXCbQxrDlM50s6kcncjVKC”]He was subsequently charged with treason.

Police have since been given permission to seize all electronic devices belonging to Mr Anyidoho by a High Court.

The court gave permission for all electronic gadgets including laptops, iPhone and iPads, believed to hold information related to the charge to be seized to aid the police investigations.

Mr Anyidoho landed in hot waters when, in an interview on Accra-based Happy FM, he called for the overthrow of President Nana Akufo-Addo over the ratification of the controversial defence cooperation agreement between Ghana and the US.

He said the overthrow will be in the form of a “civilian coup d’etat”.

The host of the show on which the comments were made, Kwame Affrifa, had also been invited by the police to aid in their investigations.

Support from Mahama

A former President, John Mahama, made recent comments on social media which suggest he did not approve of the way Mr. Anyidoho was taken into custody by the police.

On Wednesday, Mr Mahama criticised the Police for what he described as their ‘high-handed’ responses to “innocent” Ghanaians who massed up at the Police Headquarters on Tuesday night in solidarity with the arrested NDC national executive.

In a Facebook post, the former President chided Akufo-Addo government for the manner in which Mr Anyidoho was arrested and later charged with treason.

He, however, did not make mention of the comments made by Mr Anyidoho which have been widely condemned.

Mr Mahama later visited Mr Anyidoho at the BNI headquarters.

The Deputy General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress [NDC], Koku Anyidoho, has been charged with treason, and thus refused bail, following his invitation to the Criminal Investigations Department [CID], earlier today [Tuesday].

A police source at the CID Headquarters in Accra, where Mr. Anyidoho is being held, confirmed the latest development to Citi News.

This comes shortly after he was taken to his house for a thorough search, and brought back to the CID Headquarters, where hundreds of NDC supporters had gathered outside demanding his release.

Mr. Anyidoho in an interview on Accra-based Happy FM, indicated that President Akufo-Addo will be overthrown just like his father and the late Dr. K. A Busia due to the ratification of the controversial defence cooperation agreement between the US and the government of Ghana.

“Somebody should tell Nana Addo that history has a very interesting way of repeating itself. On the 13th of January 1972, a certain Colonel Ignatius Kutu Acheampong led an insurrection that removed the progress party from power. Busia was the Prime Minister and Akufo Addo’s father was the ceremonial President. Someone should tell Akufo-Addo that history has an interesting way of repeating itself,” Anyidoho warned.

When he was asked by the Host to clarify his statement , Koku Anyidoho maintained that “history has an interesting way of repeating itself.”

“There will be a civilian coup d’état. There will be a social revolution. We [NDC] are starting it on Wednesday. The movement is starting on Wednesday. Nana Addo will have sleepless nights. He will suffer diarrhea. He said he wanted to be president, but we will make sure he will be fed up on the seat,’’ he noted further.

Mr. Sylvester Mensah, a leading member of the NDC, told a crowd of NDC supporters that he has been told that Mr. Anyidoho would not be granted bail.

He thus charged the supporters not to go home, saying the turn of events clearly shows the issue had become political.

“We have been told by the officer in charge that they are not going to grant him bail. There’s a law in this country that allows every offense to be bailable. Our lawyers are out there very angry. The General Secretary and senior party members are all there extremely angry, and to say that you cannot bail him is a political issue, and I don’t think anybody should go home.”

Citi News‘ Fred Djabanor also reports from the Police Headquarters that there had been attempts by national executives of the NDC and lawyers, to secure bail for Mr. Anyidoho, but that has not happened, as he has now been moved from the Police CID to an unknown location.

Addressing party supporters, Mr. Asiedu Nketia said the party will still join in the demonstration scheduled for Wednesday against the Ghana-US defence cooperation agreement ratified by Parliament last Friday despite a boycott by the Minority.

The Arrest

Mr. Anyidoho was picked up at the International Press Centre in Accra during a press conference by a group of opposition political parties known as the Inter-Party Coalition for National Sovereignty, who are kicking against the Ghana-US Defence Cooperation agreement ratified by Parliament last Friday.

The group comprises the People’s National Convention [PNC], the National Democratic Congress [NDC], the Convention People’s Party [CPP], the Progressive People’s Party [PPP], and the All People’s Congress [APC].

The press conference was attended by a number of the parties’ top officials including NDC’s General Secretary Johnson Asiedu Nketia, Hassan Ayariga of the APC and Bernard Mornah, PNC Chairman, who condemned the invasion of the press conference to arrest Mr. Ayidoho, saying it was an attempt to silence them and a threat to freedom of speech.

A member of National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sylvester Mensah, has condemned the Criminal Investigations Department’s (CID) invitation of the party’s Deputy General Secretary, Koku Anyidoho.

Anyidoho was invited by the CID after making comments deemed treasonable.

Mr. Anyidoho in an interview on Accra-based Happy FM had indicated that President Akufo-Addo will be overthrown just like his father and the late Dr. K. A Busia due to the ratification of the controversial defence cooperation agreement between the US and the government of Ghana.

[contextly_sidebar id=”SUscWZe8uWwfsMLurvJxj1vPx9WGNnqE”]“Somebody should tell Nana Addo that history has a very interesting way of repeating itself.

Mr. Mensah in an interview with Citi News on the sidelines of a press conference by a group of opposition political parties known as Inter-Party Coalition for National Sovereignty, said the reaction to the comments were needless.

“When the Minister of Finance during the opposition indicated that Ghana was ripe for a political coup d’etat, did we arrest him? We need to demonstrate some political tolerance in this country. What is happening is not fair. It is not proper. We are generating too much tension in this country. It does not serve the interest of any political party. It does not serve the interest of the opposition, it does not serve the interest of those in government. Tolerance is key in politics. This thing is being carried too far. It is being overstretched.”

Mr. Mensah believes the CID’s invitation was needless, since it was obvious “Koku Anyidoho is not planning a coup.”

“The General Secretary has dissociated the party from the general perception that Koku Anyidoho had made a statement to the effect that there will be a military coup. The issues are being overstretched.”

NPP condemns Anyidoho’s comments

Meanwhile, the New Patriotic Party, NPP, has described Mr. Anyidoho’s comments as reckless and amateurish.

“The NPP as a party unreservedly condemns this reckless, amateurish, and misguided statement from Mr. Anyidoho, especially judging from his background as a former presidential spokesperson for former President John Evans Atta Mills, who was hailed by all as a peace-loving personality,” a statement signed by National Youth Organizer of the NPP, Sammy Awuku added.

National Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Kofi Portuphy, has said his party will not be intimidated by the invitation of its Deputy General Secretary, Koku Anyidoho, to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) over some comments the latter made which have been described as treasonable.

Mr. Portuphy, who described the development as an attempt by the government to scare them, said the party would remain defiant despite the arrest of one of their top officials.

“They arresting the Deputy General Secretary of our party is not right, but they cannot scare anybody. We will go and listen to them, they said they want him. He works for us, don’t worry we will go,” he said in a Citi News interview on Tuesday.

[contextly_sidebar id=”exeXCwe45PiDvm2liBHAz30LckklXqCc”]Mr. Anyidoho had, in an interview on Accra-based Happy FM, indicated that President Akufo-Addo will be overthrown because of the ratification of the controversial defence cooperation agreement between Ghana and the US.

The deal was ratified by Parliament despite the resistance of some sections of the public which, according to Anyidoho, will spark a “social revolution” in the country.

“There will be a civilian coup d’état. There will be a social revolution. We [NDC] are starting it on Wednesday. The movement is starting on Wednesday. Nana Addo will have sleepless nights. He will suffer diarrhea. He said he wanted to be president, but we will make sure he will be fed up on the seat,’’ he added.

Anyidoho has since been widely condemned for the comments.

He was subsequently picked up by the CID at the International Press Centre in Accra on Tuesday during a press conference by a group of opposition political parties known as the Inter-Party Coalition for National Sovereignty, who are kicking against the Ghana-US Defence Cooperation agreement ratified by Parliament last Friday.

Several stalwarts of the NDC stormed the premises of the CID over his detention.

They included former National Security Coordinator, Kofi Totobi Kwakye, former Deputy Minister of Communications, Felix Ofosu-Kwakye and former Deputy Minister for Employment and Labour Relations, Baba Jamal, among others.

‘Reckless, amateurish’

The governing New Patriotic Party [NPP], also described as reckless and amateurish Koku Anyidoho’s comment.

“The NPP as a party unreservedly condemns this reckless, amateurish, and misguided statement from Mr. Anyidoho, especially judging from his background as a former presidential spokesperson for former President John Evans Atta Mills, who was hailed by all as a peace-loving personality,” a statement signed by National Youth Organizer of the NPP, Sammy Awuku said.

Security agencies must be on alert

The statement from the NPP also urged the security agencies to be on alert to avert any attempt to destabilize the country.

“We call on the security agencies to be on the alert because there is no smoke without fire. The police should invite Mr. Anyidoho over his treasonable comments and inciting Ghanaians to forcibly remove a democratically elected government,” the statement added.

The Criminal Investigative Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has committed itself to equipping its personnel with the needed expertise to deal with the new wave of crime in the country.

According to the Director-General of the Department, DCOP Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo Danquah, her outfit has scheduled a series of training programs to enhance the readiness of personnel in their fight against crime.

[contextly_sidebar id=”MTfTSnVIJvHOvvQexzHIWVNto1GLwYMS”]“There is the need for training and retraining of personnel to equip them with the requisite knowledge and skills that will enable them to take on the challenges posed by globalization and information technology in this 21st century,” she said.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of a six-week training program for detectives from across the country, she said the training will ensure that the officers are able to effectively carry out their mandate of protecting life and property, as well as ensuring law and order.

She also noted that professional capacity building of every country’s police force is very important to its survival.

Ex-Veep advocates re-training of  officers

As the police contend with the increased crime rate in recent times, former Vice President, Kwesi Amissah-Arthur, earlier advised the police hierarchy not to underestimate the importance of effective training to the overall performance of Ghana’s security services.

Speaking to journalists in Accra, Mr. Amissah-Arthur stressed that investing in training was also an investment in proactive policing.

“When I was chairman of the council, we procured armoured vests for them and so on. The IGP will be in the Flagstaff House and the Finance Ministry looking for resources, especially for training.”

The Director General of the Criminal Investigations Department [CID] of the Police Service, DCOP Maame Tiwaa Addo-Danquah, has charged police crime officers to diligently apply the Domestic Violence Act (732, 2007) and Domestic Violence Regulations (LI 2237, 2016) in dealing with gender related violence cases.

She said a thorough understanding of the regulations will aid the officers in their pursuit to seeking justice for victims of domestic violence.

[contextly_sidebar id=”ZZ89Sl7oLwiqcgymudN5k5wAEYpzAsrM”]Speaking at a seminar for crime officers within the Greater Accra Region on Domestic and Gender Based Violence issues and challenges, Maame Tiwaa urged the personnel to strictly use the guidelines and eschew unethical practices in resolving such matters.

“The whole thing [seminar] was necessitated because I realized that most of the crime officers haven’t actually read the Domestic Violence Act, they haven’t even seen the Act and if the law that is supposed to guide us is not being used by our officers then it means they are unlikely to do their work well.”

Maame Tiwaa added that, the resolution of gender-based violence is multifaceted, and that it needs special attention.

“It is different from other traditional crimes, it’s very sensitive and most of the issues that we have to deal with are family related and other things. Moreover victims of such crimes sometimes get so much afraid, they are traumatized and we need to handle them well. Some of them may not want to report but when we receive them, we have to assure them that they are going to get justice, it encourages other people to report such cases,” she added.

Mrs. Angela Dwamena-Aboagye of the Art Foundation and other resource persons, took participants through the Domestic Violence Act 732, 2007, and the Domestic Violence Regulations LI 2237, 2016, which outlined the required guidelines for handling domestic violence cases in the country.

DCOP Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah has been confirmed as the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Police Service.

This is according to a communique from the Inspector General of Police, David Asante Apeatu sighted by Citi News.

[contextly_sidebar id=”CfZwT0sK5yvjO3pUTe5ZzB4JUkAwCgZZ”]DCOP Addo-Danquah, then with the rank of ACP, was directed to act as the Director General of the CID after DCOP Bright Oduro, had been relieved of the position in October 2017.

COP Bright Oduro was previously the Director General in charge of Welfare at the Police Service before being moved to the CID as the new Director-General in January 2017.

He was set to retire in January 2018 after 29 years of service.

The reasons for Bright Oduro’s dismissal remain unknown. However, a report by the Daily Guide Newspaper on Monday suggested that there were a series of petitions against him in some land-related issues.

He subsequently accused the police hierarchy of unfair treatment and lamented that he was not given a fair hearing over allegations that he was protecting land-guards in Accra.

DCOP Addo-Danquah controversy

DCOP Addo-Danquah, was also enveloped in controversy when she was accused by Kwame Asare Obeng, also known as A-Plus, of trying to cover-up some malfeasance in the probe of President Akufo-Addo’s two Deputy Chiefs of Staff.

In an audio said to be a leaked recording of a conversation between A-Plus and ACP Addo-Danquah, the police officer was heard advising A-Plus to deny the allegations because he is a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The Police officer was accused of misconduct in the manner she handled the investigation, per the details of the telephone conversation that appeared unprofessional and compromised.

She later claimed that the tape was doctored to portray her in a bad light, a claim A-Plus denied.
